Spoiler!

thabear04 04-27-2018 06:11 PM

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I’ll trust whatever they’re doing still need a CB or Safety.

Otter 04-27-2018 06:11 PM

I only hope he listens as good as he speaks.

Best22 04-27-2018 06:12 PM

I guess they believe in Amerson

smithandrew051 04-27-2018 06:13 PM

As bad as our D Line has been, it’s hard to argue with the thought process.

displacedinMN 04-27-2018 06:13 PM

good football name

Simply Red 04-27-2018 06:13 PM

Simply Red 04-27-2018 06:13 PM

With the trade up I was expecting Oliver.

Don’t know anything about this dude other than Mayock talking about having a 3rd round grade on him.

Time will tell, hope he works out

Sofa King 04-27-2018 06:16 PM

Who?

BigRedChief 04-27-2018 06:17 PM

Sounds like he came on late in his college career. But could be someone in a year or two. Pass rushers are hard to come by.

Flying High D 04-27-2018 06:17 PM

We won’t get the pizza now. He better be good.

Best22 04-27-2018 06:18 PM

I think it is a bit of a reach but he should be able to contribute. I believe he's much farther along than

Just don't feel confident with only 3 legit corners (Fuller, Amerson, Nelson)

FloridaMan88 04-27-2018 06:18 PM

For what it's worth, Kiper before the draft said that Speaks was "the most underrated defensive player in the draft".

Don't care how good your CB's are. If you have no pass rush, it doesn't matter.

I'd love this pick if his name was Maurice Hurst. Not sure I get why they had to trade up for this guy.

ESPN guys did seem to like him more than Mayock, so there is that. Guess we'll see. Front office must really like him.

Dante84 04-27-2018 06:21 PM

Watched his tape - looks like he's really good at diagnosing the play and finding the ball, and he is a very aggressive tackler.

Some of you people are so mind-numbingly stupid I can't even comprehend how you can figure out how to post.

We've made ONE pick. "We still need a corner" ... "our cornerback room still sucks" ... news flash: you can't fix your entire ****ing team with 1 draft pick, and here's a bonus tip for you - drafting for need is what the Cleveland Browns do. Go be a Browns fan. Have fun with that.

petegz28 04-27-2018 06:23 PM

If this guy can blast the gap and get in the backfield that's a much needed improvement over last year.

A good pass rush makes an average CB and good CB.

The greatest CB cannot makeup for a weak pass rush.

Dante84 04-27-2018 06:26 PM

Jones / KPass / Speaks / Houston

staylor26 04-27-2018 06:27 PM

Warren Sapp comedic instincts... I would take 3/4's of Warren's career.

RunKC 04-27-2018 06:28 PM

We wanted Taven Bryan for inside pressure. He was gone so this is the backup plan.

Pretty much how you have to be with every pick.

I remember when we drafted Hali how many people were against that.

Or trading up for Houston.

Seems the Charles pick was mocked as well, IIRC.

staylor26 04-27-2018 06:35 PM

Reid giving a great breakdown live in the OP

RunKC 04-27-2018 06:36 PM

Chris Jones was really good on the edge last year. He slimmed down to 285. Now we pick another guy similar to what he is currently at physically.

Tanoh, Jones and Speaks can all play edge or inside. Lotta versatility there.

petegz28 04-27-2018 06:36 PM

People are just way too reactionary on draft day

We were all wanting a DB, but we took a sleeper with the skill set to be a huge steal like Jones. It’s a surprise and a bit of a disappointment, but of course it wasn’t a bad pick.

Seems that they want a front full of strong dudes who also have some explosion. No pure fatties, but not many frail dudes either.

I love it. A GM who takes risks. Use the high picks on positional value. Gladly take a few projects even if a few busts. Hopefully he hits on the "safe" picks in the late rounds better than Dorsey did.

Easy 6 04-27-2018 06:40 PM

My draft guide has this to say...

Pros - Speaks played all over the D line at Ol Miss, and he has the blend of size and movement skills to be used in a similar way in the NFL. Good mover for a 300 pounder who locates the ball quickly, and shows outstanding range when when chasing plays in pursuit. Seemingly has upside as a pass rusher, as he typically had no game plan and poor technique, but was still able to disrupt the backfield

Cons - Speaks is very raw. It often looks like he is stepping onto a football field for the first time from a technique standpoint. Shows little as far as hand use goes, gets too upright and often seems to be chasing plays as if he is a linebacker in space. While his football character isnt problematic, he has had multiple ejections, and an off field DUI in 2016

Summary - If he can grasp the technical aspects of the job, he has the upside to be a quality 3 down player as a 5 technique in an odd front, or on the interior, or as an edge setting end in a 4-3

Not too overwhelmed with this at the moment

While I have no problem with building from front to back, his profile isnt really screaming out to me... lotta mehs in there, but he does sound somewhat like a Jones clone with his potential versatility

I've been saying it all night. Yes, we need a DB but if you don't have a pass rush then no DB in the world is going to win you anything on defense.

Best22 04-27-2018 06:41 PM

He's listed as a "Defensive End" because Ole Miss played a 4-3 defense. He's an EDGE player and an OLB in our defense

We could trim him down and re-transition his weight

I think he's talented and can make an immediate impact, but I still feel it's a bit of a reach

Chris Meck 04-27-2018 06:41 PM

what I like is that it appears that they're setting up the three DL spots and two OLB spots as...anybody can literally line up anywhere at any time. You don't know who's where, who's coming, and who's not. I like the idea. Other than I doubt you'd see Houston inside, You could literally see anything else.

Not a bad list...and Breeland Speaks is now on that list. - @ChiefsReporter

TomBarndtsTwin 04-27-2018 06:47 PM

I mean, I guess it fills a need somewhat, so okay, but did you really have to trade up to get this JAG that would have been there at 54?

It’s like we wanted to just give away the pick we acquired in the Alex Smith trade . . . .

Mecca 04-27-2018 06:52 PM

This is what you have right here, a guy who is most likely a strong side OLB in this scheme, so that means they are prepping for life without Houston or moving him to the other side...

I think immediately what it is, is a team that is completely doubling down that if Dee Ford is hurt Frank Zombo isn't on the field again.

I also think it has a lot to do with that nickel sub package they sit in 50% of the time, they seem to be trying to get dudes who are versatile enough to play in that package and not make running to easy.

Don't be surprised if a speedy LB is taken sometime today for that same reason.

This is also a pick about value, if you wait you don't get a guy like this in this draft, there aren't many of these guys.

But for example a NT or a CB or S there's a lot of them.
