Movies about wilderness/survival

Sorry about the shitty thread title. I wasn't sure how to word it.

I've been on a kick lately its movies about people being out in the wilderness. It doesn't matter if they're stranded or out there by choice, I'm just into the genre in general at the moment.

Off the top of my head I've seen Jeremiah Johnson, The Edge, Alive, Wild, and Into the White.

I'm looking for recommendations on great wilderness/survival movies.

What do you guys know?

Al Czervik 04-25-2016 05:58 PM

Alone in the Wilderness
Dick Proenneke......Good stuff but its only available via purchase.

Deberg_1990 04-25-2016 06:08 PM

Just off the top of my head

The Grey, Alive, 127 Hours,

penguinz 04-25-2016 07:31 PM

Just don't watch Into the Wild. You will want to kill yourself over how stupid that kid was.

Touching The Void- strongly recommend this film. Well worth your time.

Deberg_1990 04-25-2016 07:50 PM

Everest was another good one.

Although, I have a tough time feeling sorry for these Adrenaline junkie types.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/me582PSOF3w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Stranded: I've Come From A Plane That Crashed in The Mountains: The survivors of the 1972 Andes plane crash tell their story; intense is an understatement.

ThaVirus 04-25-2016 07:58 PM

Everest was garbo. I wouldn't even recommend it.

TimBone 04-25-2016 10:38 PM

Guys, sorry I made the thread and then bailed. Had some issues tonight at work. Great suggestions so far. I think I might start with Touching The Void.

Has anybody seen Into the White? It's pretty good. German bomber pilots and English Fighter pilots both get shot down over Norway and end up stranded at the same remote abandoned cabin, and they have to work together to survive.

Just Passin' By 04-25-2016 10:55 PM

Here are a few, with some variety. I hope it's what you're looking for.

The Revenant was just in theaters, Man In The Wilderness is the earlier version
Castaway and Robinson Crusoe are island survival
Walkabout, or The Earthling, if you want survival in Australia
Touching The Void for a climbing survival movie (or Vertical Limit, which is not great, but watchable if you like Robin Tunney, since TTV was already mentioned)
Quest For Fire for a prehistoric survival movie
Deliverance for a (dated but still worth a watch if you've never seen it) Redneck survival movie
The Road for a post-apocalypse survival story
Into the Grizzly Maze for another Man v. Bear survival movie

I read an awful review on that movie when it first came out, and I've never even thought about watching since.

TimBone 04-25-2016 10:59 PM

Concerning the movie Wild, I think it's one of those movies that might be the perfect date movie. For women it's got the drama and emotions of Witherspoon's relationship with her mother, and for guys it has the wilderness survival and flashbacks to scenes of Witherspoon having tons of drug-addled sex with strangers. It's a win/win.

The movie is good (IMHO) but yeah, McCandless was a dumbass.

Nzoner 04-26-2016 09:58 AM

My father is a huge fan of The Naked Prey and he passed it on to me,it's definitely an older film but if you can find it do yourself a favor and watch,it's a classic tale of survival.

Having been laid up with a broken foot recently, I also went on a survival film kick...

Watched Into the Wild, enjoyed it...

I highly recommend The Way Back. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1023114/

Rain Man 04-26-2016 03:53 PM

Have people seen this movie? It's a documentary that I found quite enthralling: http://www.merufilm.com/

Not necessarily a survivalist movie, but "The Way" with Martin Sheen is my favorite. It's about hiking the Camino across northern Spain.

Grizzly Man.

Not really wilderness survival per se but Surviving the Game with Ice T popped into my head. Haven't seen it in about 15 years but I liked it..

ThaVirus 04-26-2016 08:38 PM

IIRC, Gary Busey's in that one too.

I watched The Way Back last night. It was a good movie. I put it on at 1:30 am thinking I'd watch half last night and the rest this morning. I didn't go to sleep until it was over.

I am very happy to see that Alone in the Wilderness and Naked Prey have already been mentioned. Both are great.

Would The Flight of the Phoenix (1965) qualify?

Inferno (1953) and its made for tv remake Ordeal (1973) may also be of interest. Deliver Us from Evil (1973) is also a pretty good made for tv movie that you may like.

Cheater5 05-05-2016 06:27 PM

I forgot to mention Papillon with Steve McQueen. Great movie that also has Dustin Hoffman.
