Chiefs pursuing Sam Madison as secondary assistant

Sorry if Q

The Kansas City Chiefs recently lost longtime secondary coach Emmitt Thomas to retirement, and it appears that they are actively pursuing his replacement.
First reported by The Athletic KC’s own Nate Taylor, former NFL cornerback Sam Madison is the leading candidate to join Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s staff as a secondary coach.

Madison played under Spagnuolo for the Giants in 2007, the same year they won the Super Bowl. He enjoyed a decent pro career having retired in 2008 with 38 interceptions and 81 defended passes.

Madison would work with new defensive backs coach David Merritt, who recently came over from the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Working as an analyst for the Miami Dolphins, he has been living in Florida and would likely have to adjust to the brittle Kansas City weather if he is hired as the secondary coach, but it would be a worthwhile investment. The four-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro had a lengthy career and enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career under Spagnuolo in that 2007 season. With 4 interceptions and 14 passes defended, the former second-round pick seemed to work well under Spagnuolo’s system.

Working as a coach could prove to be beneficial for all parties, as the Chiefs would be getting a cornerback who, in his prime, was excellent in coverage. Those coverage skills could translate nicely when taught to the young and eager secondary unit of the Chiefs. Madison would be able to help apply the principles as a former player.

Emmitt Thomas recently retired after 51 years in the NFL.

Guess this means Harris is/might be out. Haven't heard anything stating that.

I was hoping we would trade for him when we traded for Surtain.

If he knows how to defend a slant on 3rd and 8, pay him whatever he wants.

Maybe he can get them to turn their head and look for the ball instead of just grabbing the WR..

No Shit ,it would be nice to have corners like that.they just don’t seem to get it, at this level do you think a coaching change can fix it?

The fact that Spagnulo is being allowed to overhaul the entire defensive operation gives me a ton of hope I didn't have prior.

I'm so old I remember him as a player. Dolphins right? Lined up opposite to Patrick Surtain.

All the phins did back then was run 2 deep press man and challenge you to beat it.

With Surtain and Madison along with Taylor rushing and Thomas patrolling the 2nd level, even that simple D was effective. I don't think you can get away with something like that in the modern NFL, but I remember finding it a bit novel back then.

Or can stop just 1 of 3 consecutive 3rd and 10s it's a big upgrade.

This. And hopefully he's a good talent evaluator to fill the kind of defense he wants to run.
