Is this going to be the loudest game ever at Arrowhead?

I have gone to a bunch of games the last 25 years. The two loudest Chiefs games I have attended would be the 1995 MNF game against the Chargers and the 2014 game against the Patriots that broke the noise record. I honestly think this one might top them all. You have the cold which is driving ticket prices down and also weeding out the fair weather fans. You have the pent up energy from fans who have been dreaming their whole lives of watching an AFC Championship game from Arrowhead. Plus it's an evening game so more time for drinking. What do you think?

T-post Tom 01-15-2019 02:58 PM

Colin Cowherd was yapping about Arrowhead not being loud because of the cold. The Hunts should spring for air horns. Give them out to the first 10K people. Just in case. :)

htismaqe 01-15-2019 02:59 PM

I will be doing my part.

I'm having surgery next Wednesday and have all next week off. If I lose my voice, I don't need to have it back until the 28th. :D

Good luck with the surgery. Hope that penis reduction surgery works & you'll finally be able to walk without a limp.

Bob Dole 01-15-2019 03:04 PM

Sound travels faster in warm air, so I doubt the record is beaten. Unless it’s colder on the field than above, in which case refraction might come in to play.

petegz28 01-15-2019 03:05 PM

No. All the gloves and hoods and ski masks and what not will muffle the sound along with the cold air. It will be loud but it would be tons louder if it were 40 instead of 4.....

Thanks man.

wazu 01-15-2019 03:10 PM

It will be loud enough. One thing I noticed on Saturday is fans made it loud for longer. Much of the game it was full volume while Colts were still in the huddle.

Gravedigger 01-15-2019 03:11 PM

Just loud enough to get some Patriot to **** up some snap counts and play call relays.

Hammock Parties 01-15-2019 03:15 PM

Yes.

Saturday was incredibly loud and the fans just got louder as the game kept going on.

I'm going to try and lose my voice Sunday.

It's true that it's a lot harder to make noise when you're wearing gloves and such, but I think the crowd knows it has to leave everything on the field this weekend. Biggest game ever for us, too.

pugsnotdrugs19 01-15-2019 03:51 PM

I don’t think the cold is going to have as great of an impact on noise as some seem to believe.

The Oakland game a couple years back was like 6-10 degrees alll night and it was really loud all game. This is a much, much bigger contest.

bowener 01-15-2019 04:24 PM

Was anybody here present for the December 9, 1990 game against the Broncos? The game where Elway refused to play.

On film that looks like it would be so much louder than Arrowhead is now. More seats in the stadium, cheaper prices, and the old school football fans screaming... not the newer sit on their ass fans that never stand or yell.

I was at a game back when my family had the section 110 season tickets. Probably 10 years ago now. And some old douche behind me was telling us to sit down the whole game when we stood up on 3rd downs. We just looked at him like "go **** yourself this is Arrowhead get off your fat ass"

Yehoodi 01-15-2019 04:32 PM

It should be interesting to see if it can be the loudest. My guess would be what many have said and that the clothing will muffled the noise to a degree.

It will still be loud though, to break the record might be tough.

It is certainly a big game.

It may have been mic positioning - but the Colts game was the loudest I can recall Arrowhead being in a long, long time.

I was at the Raiders game. My section stood from the 1st-3rd quarters and my voice was gone for the next two days.

kgrund 01-15-2019 04:34 PM

If you REALLY want to make some noise, especially with gloves on, the key is pounding on the chair backs. I remember a game one time a number of years ago when everybody starting pounding on the seats and it sounded like a jet was taking off.

CoMoChief 01-15-2019 04:43 PM

Probably not...because it's gonna be so cold outside.

Still gonna be very loud though...it will be a packed house regardless of temp.

Someone should put together a really well designed guide/rules for going to a home game. Things like.. plan on standing 95% of the time. To create more noise do "x" things, etc.

Chiefnj2 01-15-2019 05:39 PM

It would be awesome if CP members around the stadium started some chants that could be heard on tv.

I was thinking after NE's first punt everyone should chant "Gisele likes Patrick"

After the second punt sing the chorus to Glory Days.

I'm sure the Planet can come up with some funny and semi-clean chants that the entire stadium could get into

There's an inverse correlation between the amount of syllables in a chant and the ease in which that chant is joined by a large group of people.

crispystl 01-15-2019 05:46 PM

I don't know if the entire stadium will be the loudest it's ever been, but I'll gauran ****ing tee you Section 346, Row 39, Seat 25 will be the loudest it has EVER been.

put a few quarters in an empty plastic water bottle and shake. louder than those noise maker things.

Sound does, indeed, "carry better" when air is calm and bitterly cold. Sound normally travels outward in all directions from its source. However, when air is bitterly cold, a strong "temperature inversion" (warm air above cold air) exists, and this resists the usual upward movement of sound. Sound waves heading up tend to reflect off the sharp temperature (and density) boundary that exists between the cold and warm layers, and sound waves return to the surface--often at a considerable distance from their source.

Frigid air is also extremely dense--sound waves travel well in such air. And, with no wind, background noise is at a minimum. Distant sounds can be clearly heard.

displacedinMN 01-15-2019 06:31 PM

cold, low humidity helps chances

wind, heavier clothing hurts chances

so, I would say no

arrwheader 01-15-2019 06:37 PM

So the field will be warmer than the air so we won’t get the best effect but I bet it will still be very loud.

The FIELD will be warm. I'm guessing that heat will dissipate EXTREMELY fast in the air above the field.

Kind of what I was thinking. It’s going to be pretty damn cold so if the air is frigid even above the field at about the start of the club level then the sound could bounce around more in that stadium.

No, the cold will hamper the noise in several ways. Been to literally hundreds of games. No matter the crowds effort, once it gets into the single digits, it can’t become “the loudest” game.

chuxtrux 01-15-2019 09:42 PM

The cold is obviously a negative. Still, the biggest positive is the percentage of die hard fans compared to casual fans is going to be higher than any other game in Arrowhead history. With it being 4 degrees only the insane, drunk, loud fans are going to attend. So I think the number of people screaming their heads off is going to be at an all time high. It's going to be awesome!

No, the severe cold weather will kill a large amount of the noise. People will be wearing big fat winter gloves so clapping won't be heard as much. They will be wearing masks and scarves over their mouths which will lower the level of their screaming.

The best thing people can do is get those Boom(thunder) sticks that they can clap with and slap against chairs.

KCbroncoHATER 01-15-2019 11:10 PM

I remember when the fans wouldn't shut up and Grbac couldn't hear the plays called from the coaches so he had to call the last few plays himself. It was a playoff game and the fans were over the top. It was so loud that I couldn't hear my bud sitting next to me. We were on the top of the lower level, ten yard line, visitors side. Grbac had problems setting up the plays because of the noise. We came up short when a long ball to the sideline was a half second late. I will never forget that playoff loss.
