Push button start cars and cold weather

I am going to ramble through this.

It is going to be cold. ****ing Cold.
New cars have a push button start-will they always start???
How to you "crank them" if they do not right away.
Fewer cars have heat plugs today. Was told they are not really needed.

Just want my wifes car to be ok since she has to work tomorrow.
My truck still has a key and remote start.. I have to go in even though school was closed.

Sassy Squatch 01-28-2019 05:40 PM

Only problem I had was when the key itself got cold too.

Bugeater 01-28-2019 05:45 PM

Somehow today's cars know when to stop cranking. My 2011 Dakota has the conventional key switch, but all you have to do is click it to the start position for a second and it will crank on its own and stop once the engine starts running. Sometimes it does seem like it stays engaged a second or two too long and makes a unsettling grinding sound, which I'm sure is slowly destroying my starter. Built Ram tough and shit y'know.

My wife's car never fails to start using the button. Shit, might have just jinxed myself the next few days are going to be brutal by mid-mo standards.

Push that button in harder than normal

Your starter is bad.

.Wind chills are expected to fall to 25 below to 35 below zero
tonight and Tuesday morning. Dangerous wind chills of 45 below to
65 below zero are expected for most of the period from Tuesday
night through Thursday morning. This is a life-threatening
situation for those spending any prolonged period outdoors without
proper clothing. A Wind Chill Warning is in effect from Tuesday
through Thursday morning area wide.

Record low temperatures are possible in the Twin Cities Wednesday
morning and Thursday morning. The record for Wednesday is
30 below and the record for Thursday is 27 below.

In addition, gusty winds Tuesday will lead to areas of blowing
snow across western and southern Minnesota. A Winter Weather
Advisory is in effect in these areas from 10 AM to 6 PM Tuesday.

It's electricity man. Worry about your battery.

Push button start most likely has remote start as well.

SAUTO 01-28-2019 05:53 PM

And if it didn't start right away just push the button a couple times to shut it all off and then try to start it again

When I started working for my boss, he couldn't understand why I didn't want to move to northern MN. "You're just as far north as we are " he said. I'm in NE Washington state but we generally don't get the arctic blasts.

Yeah, Bob. This is why I didn't want to move there.

Modern fuel injection and the super thin and efficient oils used in cars these days makes this point pretty much moot.

Back in the day with carburetors and what not it was a thing, not so much now.

In extremely cold environments, block heaters are used, but I seriously don't think you are going to have a problem.

There's a ton of swine operations in the North there. I can't even imagine keeping them alive in that.

The tech that still irks me are the cars that shut off at a light until you remove your foot from the brake. These cars (as explained to me) have two batteries, one for crank and one for everything else.

Still though...that is just bound to go wrong.

I can't even imagine what -60 feels like. I've been in Florida so long, I start getting cold when it gets below 70.
