Batman The Animated Series

So I just recently picked up the complete series on Blu Ray....and goddamn I forgot how good this series was.

It's the best Batman interpretation in any medium and the upgrades they did with this for BR are amazing, looks and sounds out of this world.

I loved this cartoon as a kid but had forgot so much about it and watching it again makes me appreciate how good it was. The storytelling is top notch, rarely a bad episode, and one of the few cartoons that both children and adults can enjoy.

So what's everyone else's feelings on this? Stories, favorite episodes, thoughts?

BTW if you have the $$ and are a fan of this show, the Special Edition set is a no brainer...comes with 2 movies as well as the entire run, some cool special features and interviews, etc. and you get a digital code for it as well.

Did you buy it online?

Amazon...it's pretty much available everywhere.

Great cartoon. It's amazing how much story they could cram into a little over 20 minutes. Fantastic voice casting. Best version of Batman, imo.

Jerm 02-06-2019 03:04 PM

Heart of Ice is one of the best episodes of TV period...cartoon or not.

So good.

ThaVirus 02-06-2019 03:34 PM

They had it on Amazon Prime a few months ago so I was re-watching it before bed every night. It’s dark, literally and figuratively- it’s a great show to fall asleep to.

I didn’t get a chance to make it all the way through so I’m going to have to do that soon.

I’ve actually been re-watching the X-Men animated series from the 90’s. The nostalgia is insane.

I figure I’ll finish X-Men, then go through Batman, then Gargoyles and finally the Spider-Man animated series.

I need to watch this as well...loved that cartoon. It was on Netflix, just might buy the seasons on Prime, think they're like $15 a season or something.

Mennonite 02-06-2019 04:03 PM

I'm not up on modern kids shows, but has there ever been a cartoon that comes close to the high quality writing, voice acting, and music of TAS?

Batman Beyond was pretty damn good too, imo.

Mephistopheles Janx 02-06-2019 04:13 PM

I'm on season 3 of the X-Men Animated series and have BTA along with Justice League Unlimited queued up next. Good shit.

I've also got the original Thundercats but gotta wait until the wife gets time as she because she was a huge fan as a kid as well.

ThaVirus 02-06-2019 05:01 PM

X-Men is great if you can get past the 90's cheesiness. The costumes are awesome and they really did a great job of hitting nearly every classic X-Men storyline.

Batman is incredible too. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill's voice acting is second to none.

I own that Blu-ray set too. It's fantastic. I'd recommend Young Justice s1&2 as well...that show is the modern BTAS, great stories, characters. S3 just started on the DCU app.

lcarus 02-06-2019 05:53 PM

One of my favorite shows ever. Amazing how well it holds up even today. Its a real work of art. Even though it was still great, I didnt care for a lot of the redesign choices they made when it changed to "The New Batman Adventures".

My favorite episode is possibly Perchance to Dream. I also like Almost Got Im, Two-Face parts 1&2, Second Chance, Heart of Ice, Mad as a Hatter. Hell way too many to list.

Jerm 02-06-2019 06:07 PM

Two-Face 1&2 is right up there for me as well...Beware The Grey Ghost too.

Like you said, too many to list.

kjwood75nro 02-06-2019 06:51 PM

Also can't forget the continuation of this series, "The New Batman Adventures," which had "Over the Edge" and an episode where Harley Quinn emerges from a giant cream pie for Joker, and he couldn't care less.

CoMoChief 02-06-2019 07:31 PM

Is this the old skool cartoon from the 90's?

Loved that shit...grew up watching that before/after school.

CoMoChief 02-06-2019 07:32 PM

I also like the Avengers Assemble cartoon series now.

They kind of keep some of the current character arcs.

ThaVirus 02-06-2019 09:22 PM

Almost Got 'Im has to be the one where all the villains are telling the story of the closest they were to catching the Bat around the poker table, right? That's a great one.

I always loved On Leather Wings. The Man-Bat scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.

Help me remember: there was one episode where Batman was working with some evilish dude for some reason. The evilish dude had a brutish bodyguard of sorts who was being a real dick to Batman. For instance, he like pushed Batman out of the way once and Bats is like "alright, that's strike 1". Then he keeps going up to strike 3 where he just unloads on this dude.

Is that from Batman the animated series or maybe I'm misremembering and that's from Justice League?

Ha! Nice, thank you.

League of Justice series are also good. Batmam, X-man and League are my top

Indeed, top 3 episode for me...Joker's Favor is awesome too.

I started collecting the DC Collectibles line of Animated Series figures a couple years ago. I need to start getting the ones I'm missing. They have several more coming out this year including Grey Ghost.

Yeah those are nice. They have a Mr. Freeze too. I'm cheap when it comes to collectibles though. Gotta stick with $20 action figures and stupid Funko Pops lol.

Me too...this is the only one I've spent so much on. I wanted the freeze one too but the wife would kill me

Ha I hear that. I started the Animated Series figures collection a couple years back and had to stop. They ended up making a ton more. The only thing that kinda ticks me off about the DC Collectibles line is they made the Animated Series versions of Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Bane, and a couple others as part of this big 5-pack rogues gallery where they're each in their own cell. It was awesome but it was around $200. The Animated Series Freeze was the figure I really really wanted. They made the New Batman Adventures Mr. Freeze earlier but that design stinks imo.

God i love justice league unlimited. Also I'm a flash collector i have jay garrick. I need barry wally and bart!

WhawhaWhat 02-08-2019 12:58 PM

The Superman animated series is pretty good too. Not as dark obviously but it's the same style of animation as the Batman series. Eventually they combined the 2 shows and then did the Justice League after that.

Bowser 02-08-2019 09:50 PM

Give me back my Young Justice

MarkDavis'Haircut 02-10-2019 07:26 PM

It is a great series but I prefer Batman the Brave and the Bold.

It's already out...s3 is on the new DC universe app ...it's pretty awesome so far and a little more adultish then before (blood, snapped necks, adult themes, nothing overboard) since it's not held up to network standards. The previous 2 seasons are on there as well.

And far as I can tell the previous cast is back and some new people. Only 2 missing are Tim Curry as that news guy godfrey (he had a stroke and can't voice act) and miguel Ferrer as Vandall Savage (passed away). Both have new voice actors.

Love the app so far.

For real? I like Brave and the Bold in its own way but it doesn't compare to BTAS. I liked the Brave and the Bold video game for Wii. I want them to port it to PS4 or PC since I don't have a Wii anymore and I never finished it.

Jerm 02-18-2019 10:22 AM

Was watching a couple more episodes this weekend, the music...man the orchestral scores are soooo good.
