Chiefs re-sign Tamba Hali

No joke. For one day. To retire a Chief.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">We have signed Tamba Hali to a one-day contract. The six-time Pro Bowler will officially retire as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs 🙌 <a href="https://t.co/UDTIvjl7pb">pic.twitter.com/UDTIvjl7pb</a></p>&mdash; Kansas City Chiefs (@Chiefs) <a href="https://twitter.com/Chiefs/status/1391783002578030594?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">May 10, 2021</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Couch-Potato 05-10-2021 10:05 AM

Awesome! He deserved the closure.

DaFace 05-10-2021 10:06 AM

Odd. Why does he need to re sign when he never played anywhere else?

Kiimo 05-10-2021 10:09 AM

How many years has it been since he played?

TribalElder 05-10-2021 10:12 AM

I will always hold Tamba in higher regard than others because he only played for KC

he didnt' slink off to Denver or Oakland to test the waters, he was a Chief and will always be a Chief

RealSNR 05-10-2021 10:17 AM

Noooo! That's gonna be the one contract that pushes our salary cap off the cliff! Dammit Brett!!!!!

loochy 05-10-2021 10:18 AM

hell, probably better than Clark

m i rite?

WhawhaWhat 05-10-2021 10:20 AM

89.5 career sacks, 105 TFLs, 159 QB hits for Tamba. He was a good one for sure. He hasn't played since 2017 and had some mental health issues since then but I hope he's all good now.

Jewish Rabbi 05-10-2021 10:24 AM

GREAT SIGNING BART!!!

DJJasonp 05-10-2021 10:24 AM

still feel like the guy was held every rush....

CasselGotPeedOn 05-10-2021 10:25 AM

He'd probably be our 2nd best DE currently.

You forgot his big claim to fame.

33 forced fumbles and 8 recoveries.

He had 4 or more forced fumbles in FIVE of his first 8 seasons.

CasselGotPeedOn 05-10-2021 10:33 AM

It was criminal how he never got holding calls.

gblowfish 05-10-2021 10:47 AM

He'll be in the Chiefs Ring in a couple years.

Deberg_1990 05-10-2021 10:48 AM

Solid depth signing!

big nasty kcnut 05-10-2021 10:49 AM

I wondered this, too. Is it because he was technically a free agent?

gblowfish 05-10-2021 10:53 AM

The one day signing is just a courtesy tribute. It's symbolic, that's all.

Coochie liquor 05-10-2021 11:00 AM

ChiefAshhole1056 05-10-2021 11:05 AM

He honestly really should be brought on to the staff as a pass rush consultant. He had the some of the best handfight usage in the league throughout his career. I’m sure there’s a few tricks that could be taught to the Edge rushers on this roster. Frank isn’t very different from a playing style standpoint.

He took it very seriously. IIRC, he took a lot of martial arts stuff in the offseason to work on his hand fighting.

Shaid 05-10-2021 11:09 AM

It's a little weird honestly. He was already a Chief and it's been a while since he played.

Yeah I'm really confused on why they had to do this.

He was let go so maybe to be officially retired a Chief he has to retire from the roster.

He still is better than Niemann now.

TLO 05-10-2021 11:42 AM

I remember when we did this with Charles and he got to take a handoff from Mahomes.

I'm thinking we nix the "one last sack" from Tamba...

Thanks for posting, I knew he was into stuff like that but my memory is so bad anymore.

Love Tamba. One of my all-time favourites. Played his ass off for this franchise.
Glad he is getting the recognition as he earned it.

lcarus 05-10-2021 02:32 PM

I wonder how many sacks Hali would've had if OTs weren't allowed to use wrestling moves on him. Right now he's tied for 53rd with Bryant Young with 89.5 sacks. I saw him get clotheslined like he was fighting Hulk Hogan, arm-barred like he was taking on Georges St. Pierre, strangled like he was a prom night whore in a Friday the 13th movie, and bizarrely they rarely called any of it. If an offensive lineman pulled his tights down and sexually assaulted the guy during a passing play, they probably would've gotten away with it.

No lie.

I dare anyone to show me a DE that was held as often as Hali was. Perks of playing on a shitty team (at the time), I guess?

Wilson8 05-10-2021 03:09 PM

Good to see the recognition for Tamba Hali and him retiring as a Chief.

I assume NFL teams always do this sign/retire in the offseason where they have a 90 man roster limit. No need to cut a current player.

Jamaal Charles retired as a Chief, May 1, 2019
Derrick Johnson retired as a Chief, May 8, 2019
Dwayne Bowe retired as a Chief, May 16, 2019

The Chiefs were actually at the 90 limit. They had to release somebody - it appears the lucky guy was TE Sean McCulkin.

Kind of right if you count all draft picks and RFAs that have NOT signed their contracts. Maybe they have, but have not read that Bolton, Humphrey, Powell, Gray, Kaindoh, or Smith have signed. Also I know Pringle signed, but don't think Charvarius Ward or Andrew Wylie have signed yet.

Bump 05-10-2021 05:04 PM

I thought he did retire as a Chief, did he sign elsewhere after he left?

But anyways, cool!

We sure didn't have much to get excited about back then, but this guy always showed up with some blood and guts effort

Its good to see him being honored like this, a great franchise legacy/tradition building move by the front office

Probably has something to do with his satanist neighbors sending lightning into his house a few years ago.

Might've cancelled out all of his previous accomplishments in this earthly realm.

JakeF 05-10-2021 09:47 PM

Hali got held around his throat as much as Derrick Thomas. That's impressive given how much slower Hali was. I'm pretty sure Denver players were told to just choke him out since the Refs never called it.

That's probably the case. Always will be one of my favorite Chiefs and this is a fitting tribute to his time here. If he isn't a head case, I'd bring him in as a consultant to teach some of our under performers/rookies.

Lzen 05-11-2021 09:06 AM

Good for him. Always was one of my favorite Chiefs.
