How do you beat the 2019 Kansas City Chiefs?
I am curious how teams will try to attack us this year. In my opinion, there are only 3 things that can prevent us from having a Super Bowl Season (and 1 very low odds thing).
I'm really pumped for 2019. 1. Injury to the NFL MVP Risk: Medium Why: Duh. 2. Passes to the boundaries (CB) deep corners (CB) and over the short-middle (LB's). Risk: Medium Why: So far, it seems we have improved against the Run, we still can produce pressure, and our safety play has improved drastically. Because of the hole at CB, these areas of the defense are our most vulnerable, IMO, which isn't a bad thing, all things considered: - By itself, taking the time to throw deep corners all game is not sustainable and will result in a lot of incompletions and sacks. That means more Time of Possession for the Chiefs' offense. - By itself, throwing WR screens won't work all game, and will mean more Time of Possession for the Chiefs' offense. - By itself, the short middle of the field means throwing into Chris Jones' paws and risking tipped ball INT's. It's not sustainable all game. All together, those three approaches have me worried, because dinking and dunking will move the chains and can drain the clock. 3. Injury to the NFL's #1 TE Risk: medium Why: This will force us to look to other areas of the field and position groups for production. That would make us less dimensional on offense than say, a WR going down. I wish we would have addressed the huge hole at TE2 - not for the production, but for the insurance against injury. 4. Reid's health Risk: Low Why: His playcalling is critical to our success. His health is terrible. God forbid something happen, that could derail the season. What else has you guys worried? What would you do if you had to play against us? |
Disagree with you on #2. The corners working the boundaries will be fine. The play at slot is much more worrisome, Fuller be damned. Mostly due to the communication, and/or passing off the coverage to LB's.
Opposing O's will and should target the middle of the Field and short boundaries in order to expose our LB's. Screen game, dump off passes into the flats, rub routes and passes into the seam will be heavily used against our D. We'll likely see our fair share of curl routes as well against Ward, something he struggled with in the preseason. |
I’m not saying you’re wrong, but how do we know Andy’s health is terrible? He’s a bigger dude but he’s always been big. Contrary to the many health experts that post here, you can be hefty and not necessarily be unhealthy. And, before anyone speculates, I’m 5’11 185 so I’m not tooting my own horn here.

You already know how everyone is gonna plays us, they're gonna run until we show we can stop it and follow it by throwing short and over the middle. Then they're gonna turn around and play back and force the offense to be patient.
Those 2 things together will likely lead to fewer possessions and the thought there is a few mistakes and they can steal a win. |
You can't

Also, "draining the clock" does not matter against the Chiefs. T.O.P is one of the most overrated stats in football.
The Chiefs were 26th in T.O.P last year... Trying to play clock-draining small ball is difficult as you must be perfect at it. One holding call, an incompletion or a stuffed run and now you're behind in down and distance. If a team is going to beat the Chiefs they're going to have to score 26+ to win. There's no getting around that. |
Make sure to take out Vontaze Burfict in Week 2. His job is to kill Mahomie.

Possess the ball. Run the ball.

Limit Mahomes' possessions, and play pitch perfect defense.
You're likely not going to win a shootout with Mahomes. The guy turned the football over 5 times in a game and still put up 51 points. Keep him in the pocket, putting the guards and centers to the test on if they can hold up, and force Patrick Mahomes to be patient. He loves to go for the jugular, so the test will be can he reign in the killer instinct when he needs to, and just stay on the field. Chiefs defense will be nothing to write home about. We will be marginally better than last season, and if the offense can repeat what it did last year,it should be enough. Spagnuolo has had his broken clock being right moment with NE, but everywhere else, the dude has been in the shitheap with the rest of the scrubs. Hopefully his staff can help elevate the squad, but I not looking for the D to go out and win us games. We will get marched on, and scored on with regularity. |
Chiefs had the most pass attempts against last season. The Rams basically beat us without a running game that night. NE and Seattle were the only teams that won by trying to grind....and it still took ridiculous plays by Wilson and Brady late to win
|
I thought Belichick already mapped this out :
Defense : Rush the passer through the A gap. Offense : Run the ball to keep the passer on the sidelines |

This still works for this thread |
I know.... but I don’t want to give the rest of the league any ideas...

Run the ball, keep Mahomes off the field
Play a 3-deep zone on defense, force the Chiefs to run the ball the length of the field. Get a turnover or two and the pressure on the Chiefs' offense would be huge. |
Just do what the Patriots did:
- run the ball - mug the receivers Both games, the Patriots relied on the officials to not call holding. Kelce and Hill were both mugged. |
Belichick beat the KC 2018 team twice.
Until we prove otherwise, he has our number. I like our chances. |
Basically, Seattle was the only legit loss the team had all year. Took Absolute horseshit calls in the other 3...
|
Bait us into penalties.
That's pretty much the only way you're going to accomplish this objective. The 2019 Chiefs should be an historic team. Proof of the puddin' is in the tasting, though. The players appear to be confident and I have no reason to doubt their thinking in this respect. As for TOP, I disagree completely that it's an unimportant stat. We all know the tropes (can't score if you don't have the ball, etc.), but the main problem with a quick-strike offense is the pressure it puts on your defense. Dudes get tired and we lack quality depth on that side of the ball. Never pass up a touchdown when it's there, but extended drives benefit us in a variety of ways. That shouldn't be a problem, however, since Kelce is a walking first down. Plus, we may see the best screen team to ever play the game in the 2019 Chiefs. Assuming we get the penalties under control, the only way to beat us is to rush 3 and drop 8 on defense. And good luck with that. Offensively, the enemy has to score 36 points a game. Good luck with that, too. FAX |
Yukon steal a game if the refs are on your side.

I fully expect Wally to deal with that particular issue this year, however. The 2nd half of the AFCCG proved that to me. FAX |

The only loss that matters is the one in the post-season. We will be playing teams that can matriculate the ball down the field. They will have defenses that can slow our O down. They will be able to keep our O on the bench while wearing our D down even more after a long season of them being on the field.
|
Score more than 30 points. It's the only way.
Running the ball won't work, whether the Chiefs run defense is better or not (although it is). The Chiefs will answer your 15 play drive with a 3 play score. They don't give a shit about time of possession. Possession passing down the middle of the field won't work. Same reason. The only way to beat this team is to get enough quick scores to survive the onslaught. To match them on the scoreboard. Because points are the only thing that matter. Clock is irrelevant. Your defense is not going to stop them, not enough for it to make a difference. Good luck. |
This has probably been said, but the strategy seems to be consistent:
Keep the Chiefs offense off the field as much as possible. Usually this means an effective run game. But basically keep the sticks moving and be efficient in the red zone/scoring areas. Minimize penalties. The Chiefs take a lot of penalties; if a team can keep these to a minimum, the Chiefs just might shoot themselves in the foot with a few critical ones in the course of a game. On defense, take Hill and Kelce away as much as possible. Opposing teams should probably take whatever the Chiefs running game delivers as the price of doing business, and focus on taking away Hill foremost, and Kelce inside the 30. To make this work, teams need to get penetration through the A-gaps consistently to force Mahomes to run out of the back of the pocket, eliminating his ability to step up into the pocket. This in and of itself isn't a winning formula, as we saw last year, but allowing Mahomes to just step up and either make a throw or run is a disastrous potentiality for opposing Ds, so make him run away from the line-of-scrimmage, so they only have to worry about his arm. This formula seemed to work for the Pats last year for a total of nearly 5 quarters out of 8. Also seemed to work out for the Ravens for almost 3 quarters, and for the Seahawks. And if you look at a couple other games where the Chiefs only scored 26 or 27 points against the Broncs and the second game against the Raiders, it looked they they tried the same things. The problem for any team is being able to hold the Chiefs offense to a minimum of possessions and take away their efficiency for an entire game. Or at least long enough to secure a win. |

Unfortunately Tom Brady and company will find a way en route to another Super Bowl victory.

There is one way to beat the spread, you must attack it. Pittsburgh had done that well when covering Wilson Robinson Hill and Kelce. They didn’t dare with Watkins Kelce Hill and Conley and sagging their coverage got them run out of the building. You can’t zone this scheme because they spread you too thin horizontally. It creates windows that Mahomes’ plus arm can easily exploit. You can’t play man with two high because it will afford the WRs too much time to get open unless you can quickly do away with the KC OL. Pittsburgh and LAC tried one high sending five as the game wore on and while the results were better it still wasn’t fast enough because they sent their blitzer from a distance. The only way to combat this scheme is mutual suicide. You have to press the LOS, you have to send 5 from the LOS, leaving one high at the most. You have to dare them to beat you up the field faster than you can get to the QB. You have to speed up an offense that is incredibly fast. While Mahomes is raw and the KC OL is mediocre, that is the answer. When he improves his accuracy and timing, that answer is gone.

Keep Mahomes off the field and never fail to score a TD on every offensive possession.

Dec 22 in Chicago, could be a bad weather game, with the Bears playing for their playoff life, the Chiefs not so much.
There it is. |
If we could do one thing and that is clean up our penalties we'd be 16-0 this year. It's one thing the Patriots do well and it wins them games.

How do you beat the 2019 Kansas City Chiefs?
You take their QB out of the season, by going after his knees and then boast about the way some Chief fans did cheering Pollard for it.
Karma. It goes around. |

Also, it’s widely known that he doesn’t sleep and eats like Brooke Pryor on a cheat day. But again, eyeballs. |
You out-coach their coach when he makes a dumb move, as he usually does in big games sinking the high-hopes of the fan base.

Was it a surprise when the Rams went to the SB on the worst NFCCG call in history?...all you have to do is travel back to the LA game where the Chiefs were called for like 8 penalties in the first 10 minutes. They, then, ignored a blatant false start on the Rams first quarter TD. Patriots weren't called for a penalty in the first KC match-up...then had 3 questionable 4th quarter calls in the next. Chargers were getting questionable calls in nearly every game leading up to the KC match-up (the Steelers game was a joke)...which ended with a terrible game deciding PI call that the NFL later said was wrong. This happened in the Raiders miracle 12-4 season too... If KC starts getting bad calls, again, in prime-time match-ups...you know the decision makers have someone else in mind for the SB. Sorry to say... |
You can’t beat them. You can only hope to contain them

If it's karma, why would Mahomes have to pay for something that he had no part in? That would be the person cheering the injury. |
