Coming 2 America 2?

So apparently this is a coming reality. Not sure if I'm excited about it or not.

Gotta wonder how Art Buchwald feels about this:

There's no way it can be funny now

I bet it's just 2 hours of an old Eddie Murphy sitting in a detention center, separated from his children.

Everything about Hollywood sucks today: their stupid self importance, their idiotic politics, their laziness to produce anything original and regurgitate classics into shit and lastly their hatred of free speech with PC bullshit.

The plot of the first doesn’t call for a sequel. Any sequel is going to be repetitive.

The first is so good, that the second will inevitably be a disappointment.

I can't think of a classic comedy where the 2nd installment ends up being worth a shit other than maybe the National Lampoons Vacation movies.

Dumb n Dumber 2 was awful

Super Troopers 2 was awful

The Hangover sequels were awful

I dunno...w/ comedies, there just isn't that orig shock factor with the characters into a 2nd installment. JMO...if this is really going down, I don't expect much out of it. Eddie Murphy hasn't been funny in 30yrs, and he's too toned down and conservative now. I miss the old 80's Eddie Murphy.

This is the exact reason this has a chance. It's so long after the fact that it can't be just trying to recapture the original formula. It will HAVE to be different to a large extent.

That said it will probably suck horribly.

I wouldn't put Toy Story into this category at all, or any other Pixar money machines...wasn't really referring to children's movies.

I agree w/ Wayne's World 2 though.

Mike Myers though...man talk about someone who fell off the face of the planet. Had something good going w/ Austin Powers franchise (which u could add to list of comedy sequels that weren't bad I guess) but then Love Guru and Cat in the Hat absolutely killed his career.

Eddie Murphy’s ‘Coming 2 America’ Moves From Paramount to Amazon Studios

The long-anticipated sequel to the Eddie Murphy classic is in the process of being sold by distributor Paramount Pictures to Amazon Studios, in a deal worth roughly $125 million, insiders said. The expected streaming premiere date is December 18, sources added.

Final details are being hammered out, sources said, including two complex consumer marketing tie-ins with McDonalds and whiskey brand Crown Royal, which are expected to transfer over to Amazon Studios with the film. Murphy, who produced, as well as stars in the film, has to give his blessing.

I knew this moving was being worked on, but had no idea it was already shot and finished. Have there been any previews/rumors/etc? I literally have heard nothing about it since it was announced they would be making a sequel.

With the death of Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone and re-merger of Paramount/Viacom/CBS, there's been a ton of re-organization and new leadership across the company and the dust hasn't settled just yet.

That said, I'm kind of surprised that Paramount isn't holding on to this film until it launches Paramount Plus in Q1 2021, but that may be an indicator as to the quality of this film.

For the record, it's been complete radio silence on my end regarding this film but if I hear something, I'll be sure to post.

I'm excited they are giving this a try, I loved the original! I'm also excited for Eddie to reinvent his career. And if the movie is no good it doesn't affect me at all.

There were over 160 comedies released in 2019, if you can't find good movies to watch it is your own fault. People get triggered over the dumbest things.

Looking forward to watching this tonight after work.

Not sure what to expect at all. I feel like it could either be brilliant or just be complete garbage. Considering Paramount produced the film and didn’t even want it as a means to help launch their own streaming service, my expectations are low. The nostalgia alone will be enough to make it worth my time.

Original was funny. This one was terrible. It started out with "HEY, 'MEMBER THIS CHARACTER? 'MEMBER WHEN THEY SAID THIS? WASN'T THAT FUNNY? HAHAHA. WE ARE DOING IT AGAIN! THIS IS FUNNY TOO, RIGHT? HAHAHA."

Boring. Redundant.

Loved the original....hated this one. Which is what I expected.

Very gimmicky, trying too hard to make something work. It's bad when the best parts of the movie are the flashbacks to the orig.

Sure there's a little nostalgia that factors into it. But don't bother wasting your time with this. Huge disappointment.

Seriously? Coming to America was Amazing? It wasn't even one of Eddie Murphy's best films. It was okay. It had some funny moments. Some funny characters. A few quoteable lines. But amazing? like Stripes, or Animal House, or even Beverly Hills Cop? I don't think so. And fun fact, I went to high school with the twin girls in the original Coming to America movie.

GayFrogs 03-06-2021 04:50 AM

I had to turn it off halfway, super disappointed :(. Eddie murphy's son is boring and maybe 10 minutes of the movie was set in new york from what I've seen. That's what made the first movie good, watching africans come here and experience culture clash, not some unknown actor and leslie jones (was barely ever funny) go to africa. This movie seems random. Does it get any better in the 2nd half? I'm guessing no.

Thankfully we have "dolemite is my name" from a couple years ago, that movie was hilarious and proves Eddie murphy CAN still be funny :)

Otter 03-06-2021 04:55 AM

Judging by the trailer and knowing what I do about Amazon this is going to be woke AF if I had to guess.

If it's on the TV on my next trip to the DMV I guess I'll watch.

chiefzilla1501 03-06-2021 05:01 AM

I think people's expectations were too high. It's a sequel and it doesn't try too hard. The original was 30 years ago so it was more about trying to get the story line to reintroduce a lot of the likeable characters and see what they're up to. Kinda reminds me of wet hot American summers sequel. I wouldn't watch it again. Obviously not a masterpiece. But they were all having fun and I'd say it was a fun watch. Just lower your expectations before watching.

From the trailer it looks almost like the first one exactly twenty years later.

Curious after someone actually watches it who has seen both.

ThaVirus 03-06-2021 10:24 AM

They had Leslie Frazier, Tracy Morgan and Trevor Noah in this movie. I have literally never laughed at anything any of those three have ever done.

Other than that I laughed a couple times. They legit recycled damn near every character/joke from the original. I'm surprised they didn't bring back Sam Jackson for a quick reprisal.

Also, people saying it's been 30 years. Iirc, Coming to America came out in 1983 didn't it? It's been nearly 40 years!

It's fine if you go in with the right expectations. It's not even remotely close to as funny as the original. It's meant more as a watchable movie with the feel good of seeing all these characters again, and they're having fun. It's more of a reunion movie then it is a sequel.

Fair enough fella's, there is no accounting for taste and you're welcome to your takes... but to me one of the main hallmarks of a great movie is how much it seeps into pop culture and how often you hear it referenced

To that end I'm always referencing it, and I'm also CONSTANTLY hearing other people reference it... from the barbershop, to the black awareness rally and everything in between, its still talked about as if it just came out yesterday

Well since Leslie Frazier is a football coach, I'm shocked to hear that he's in this movie :)

And if Tracy Morgan can't make you laugh, seek help ASAP!

Damn, I'm all ****ed up.

I swapped CtA and TP release dates and it's Leslie Jones! Thank you guys for the corrections.

I’m about halfway thru it. I like it a lot so far. It’s pretty funny in spurts.

Better than I expected.

Finished it. I thought overall it was pretty good. No, not as funny as the first, but definitely has it’s funny moments. It’s woke AF, but fits in with the gentle spirit of the original movie.

It’s worth a watch for sure.

Randy Watson at the end was a nice send off!
