Super Bowl Ratings Hit 10-Year Low

Apparently we weren't the only ones who weren't watching.

Super Bowl Ratings Hit 10-Year Low In Historic NFL Game & Patriots’ Win

https://deadline.com/2019/02/super-b...bs-1202548893/

The 13-3 win for the New England Patriots over the Los Angeles Rams last night wasn’t the most exciting Super Bowl ever played by any measure, but the 2019 big NFL game was sure one for the history books.

First of all, in the Patriots’ third consecutive visit to Super Bowl, the match-up in Atlanta on Sunday was the lowest scoring Super Bowl ever, a dubious honor at best. The record was previously held by Super Bowl VII, which saw the Miami Dolphins best the Washington Redskins 14-7 on January 14, 1973.

Secondly, Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady is now the first NFL player to win six Super Bowl rings with this latest triumph for the Massachusetts team. With this sixth Super Bowl win for the Patriots, the 41-year old Brady also has been in nine Super Bowls over his career, more than any other NFL player ever – which is not a record to scoff at in any way.

However, when it comes to ratings, Super Bowl LIII is not one anyone’s going to want to brag about.

Shown on CBS for the first time since 2016 and with ad spots going for around $5 million each, the Rams’ loss scored a 44.9/68 in metered market results.

To put that in the starkest light of day, that’s a dip of just over 5.2% from the big NFL battle of February 4, 2018 on NBC in the first round of ratings. On a larger playing field, that metered market result for yesterday’s game is the worst the Super Bowl has done in the early numbers since the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals on February 1, 2009.

A very tight and seamlessly flowing offering from the network, yesterday’s Super Bowl is also down a bit over 8% from the metered markets of the last time CBS had the game three years ago.

Super Bowl 50 saw the Denver Broncos top the Carolina Panthers 24-10 on February 7, 2016 in a gridiron clash that eventually resulted in 111.9 million viewers and the honor at the time of being the third most watched show in U.S. TV history.

The lowest rated Super Bowl in eight years in the early metrics, last year’s Philadelphia Eagles’ victory 41-33 over the Patriots ended up with 103.4 million viewers, a nine-year low – so far.

Last night’s post-game premiere of James Corden-fronted reality series The World’s Best pulled in a 14.0 in the metered markets according to Nielsen numbers this morning. While unscripted apples to dramatic oranges, that’s a drop of almost 14% from the special Super Bowl episode of NBC’s This Is Us that aired after last year’s Eagles’ win.

No surprise for such a low scoring game that didn’t see a single touch down for ages, Super Bowl LIII peaked near the end with a 47.3 in metered markets in the 9:30-10 PM ET slot.

As we now turn our gaze to Super Bowl LIV set for next year in Miami, we’ll update with more Super Bowl LIII numbers, including that tepid Maroon 5 halftime show and The World’s Best debut later, as more data comes in.

As we have done in the past, let’s put the latest Super Bowl in greater perspective by checking out the Top 5 Super Bowl metered market ratings ever – a list that this year’s game is certainly not a part of:

1) 2015: 49.7 – Super Bowl XLIX: New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks (NBC)
2) 2016: 49.0 – Super Bowl 50: Denver Broncos vs. Carolina Panthers (CBS)
3) 2017: 48.8 – Super Bowl LI: New England Patriots vs. Atlanta Falcons (Fox)
4) 2013: 48.1 – Super Bowl XLVII: Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers (CBS)
5) 2011: 47.9 – Super Bowl XLV: Green Bay Packers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (Fox)

Not to worry, Mahomes will save next year's Super Bowl.

Highest ratings game of the season MNF Chiefs at LA Rams.

Jerm 02-04-2019 10:16 AM

Not surprised....no one wanted to see that match up if we're being honest.

good. Not surprised.

Every aspect of the game sucked.

I did a screen shot of that. ROFL

The world wanted to see Pat Mahomes.

Bob Dole 02-04-2019 10:44 AM

Pretty clear the 54 million who watched the AFCCG weren't watching it for a Patriots win.

It pulled a 26.2 in New Orleans, which is about half the normal viewers.

Think about it. the Patriots have been to half the SB's since 2000.

It's annoying as hell but you have to give them credit.

Their division has been trash for 20 years so they basically get Homefield advantage most playoffs because they are practically gifted 6 wins a year. Yes, they are a good team and Tom Brady is good and so is Belichick. I don't think we'll ever see another great QB/Coach combo with the luxury of a shit division for that long amount of time again. I give them credit but damn if the scales weren't tipped in their favor a lot over the years.

I hope they don't try to blame the low ratings on it being a low scoring game. A low scoring game can be very entertaining if it's not just due to a couple of bad quarterbacks.

The reason this game has low ratings is because no one wants to watch the Patriots, and the Patriots pretty much guaranteed that it would be a boring game. I suspect that most non-watchers were like me - we just never turned the TV on.

Otter 02-04-2019 11:48 AM

Didn't watch a single play. The patriots are kind of like trying to watch your grandma do porn.

This.

I didn't watch a second of football Sunday -- no pregame, no game, nothing. Went to see the Peter Jackson WWI movie, came home and watched Bird Box, then an episode of the Sopranos.

Later in the evening, while I was on the porch smoking a cigar, sipping a bourbon and reading the latest issue of Cigar Aficionado magazine, I occasionally checked Twitter and CP to see reactions to the game. That pretty much told me all I needed to know.

Friend at work today asked if I boycotted the SB because the Chiefs lost, and I said not at all -- I'm exhausted with the Patriots, and I don't care for the Rams. Simple as that.

htismaqe 02-04-2019 12:05 PM

We sat through about 5 minutes of the 1st half and the halftime show to see Sweet Victory.

First Superbowl I haven’t watched since I was a kid. Looks like I didn’t miss much. Played some AC Odyssey instead.

SuperBowl4 02-04-2019 12:51 PM

You mean fans are starting to tire of the NFL's love affair with Robert Kraft and the Patriots? A lot of people took a knee and didn't tune in. Especially after that non-call in that NFC Championship Game and the Patriots getting all the calls like always. People are starting to realize it's scripted.

MMXcalibur 02-04-2019 12:59 PM

I watched the game, but honestly, I was playing my mobile game right before halftime and even moreso deep into the 3rd quarter.

I think most everyone is sick of the Patriots year-in and year-out. If they were likeable and/or easy to root for (i.e. the Packers), I wouldn't mind them being in the game as much as they are. And yeah, the Pats fans aren't going to care and rightfully so: I mean, hell, I could give two shits less if people bitch about the Chiefs being in "over and over". But no, the Patriots hail from the douchiest city on the map and field a bunch of chodes.

The NFL deserved this stinker.

You guys that are Law & Order Jerry Orback fans should watch Lt. Joe Kenda on ID channel. He's the real deal, talks about all the criminals and punks he put in jail during his years as a detective.

I didn't see any good commercials, except maybe the Dude ordering a Stella Artois. Skipped the halftime completely. It was the worse Super Bowl I've ever watched, in fact, it was one of the worse football games plain and simple. BORING!!

So, 4 of the 5 Superbowls from 2013 to 2017 were top 5 ever. 2019 was lowest in over a decade. Not to mention, ratings and viewership were up this season, with the Chiefs Rams game being the highest. It is plain to see that the NFL put on one of the worst matchups imaginable, and they paid the price for it. Hopefully, next year, the Superbowl has an exciting matchup like the Chiefs and Packers or something like that and they set records for viewership

picked? No, but the officials definitely favored NE.

0 penalties in NE. At Arrowhead , the Edelman muff, the Hogan bobbled "completion, and the Chris Jones roughing the passer penalties were totally conducive to the Patriots' plight at critical moments.

Don't know what happened to the Rams this year, after the Chiefs game they were never really the same. I think Gurly was hurt and a little like Hunt for the Chiefs, it takes time to replace that level of talent.

I still want to know how the Patriots went from 30th in sacks to the 85 Bears over their last three games.

There were penalties at NE. I believe they were offset or were declined.
There clearly was no Edelman muff.

The Patriots were actually #3 in the league in pressures. They got really good with the stunts too in the playoffs. In each of the Patriots game I noticed they attacked the weakness of the Chargers, Chiefs and Rams o-line. Which was the guard position for all 3 teams.

Purely fabricated bullshit to heighten the "drama". When the Patriots proved to the league that they could win more than 2 bowl games, the die was cast and they were selected to be the NFL's prime marketing apparatus. The problem is, they pushed it WAY too far and now it is dead as a result.

**** it, I'll call it: you've seen the LAST Super Bowl appearance of the New England Patriots with Tom Brady. It's over. Bookmark that shit.

Thank you.

There were penalties at NE. I believe they were offset or were declined.
There clearly was no Edelman muff.
The roughing call was bad, but you conveniently forget calls that went our way.

We lost. Stop being such an irrational reeruned baby.
Seriously, anyone still hanging onto the Edelman "muff" is a ****ing idiot.
And if you think all this stuff is rigged and you're still watching, you're a ****ing idiot.

Sweet, triggered

You need to tone down your crazy comments a little...you say stuff like that and people are going to know that you're just kidding.

It's not uncommon for a poster to be good at sports and shitty at politics or vice-versa at this forum.

However, it takes a special brand of CP reerun to achieve both, and at the highest heights of suckiness to boot!

Yay Cosmo!

I very much am. There are people, Tom Brady included, who think this thing is going to run as long as Tom deems it so. I'm saying that as of yesterday, Tom and his followers musings mean absolutely jack-shit to this league.

As to "crazy comments"; coming from the leftist whack-job who practically wrote the CP Bible for such discourse, well, that's rich.

The NFL has been pissing off their bread and butter (Midwest and the South i.e. the blue collar regions) lately. Not exactly a winning formula.

L.A. market had lower TV rating for Super Bowl than country as a whole
But, highest LA rating since 1996. Relative success NFL?
