Ten Things About Today's Game: Divisional Playoffs, KC 31 Indy 13

Ten Things About Today’s Game: Divisional Playoff, KC 31 Indy 13

10. It’s after 10pm and yes, I have been drinking. A lot. I got to Arrowhead around Noon, and finally walked in my front door here in Glorious Independence, MO around 8:30 to peel out of my damp winter survival gear. When I got into my robe and jammies, I had a sammich and started watching the game broadcast. I would just like to sincerely say, **** Mike Tirico, **** Tony Dungy, and especially **** RODNEY HARRISON, who all picked against the Chiefs in the pre-game show. Rodney Harrison was one of the dirtiest players ever, and Dungy wouldn’t have had a coaching career without Marty. So screw all those guys. Excuse me while I crack open another Boulevard Wheat.

9. For those of you outside of KC, I don’t think the game broadcast really showed the significance of the snow. The field had been covered up to a couple hours before kickoff. Outside Arrowhead, we had about nine inches of snow. It was a wet sloppy snow, kind of like lake effect snow. It shovels like wet cement. It snowed all morning and all afternoon, and spit more snow during the game. The fans were rabid and ready for a fight. They were loud and crazy all day long. I was late getting to the stadium because I couldn’t find my parking pass. I never did find it, and had to waste an hour setting up a ticketmaster account for Mrs. B, and transferring the parking pass to her phone. Why the Chiefs won’t just let you print out a goddamn ticket just makes me mad. Anyway, we finally got it figured out, and got in the gate with no issues. They parked me in Olathe although I was there three and a half hours before kickoff. I took a few pictures today which I’ll post later. It was a healthy trudge to the stadium.

8. Over the course of the year I get a lot of guff from the CP trolls about “All you do is read the stat sheet and don’t really add anything.” Well, I sat in the frickin snow and cold with Mrs B today, and I met Rain Main in person. So guys like Prison Bitch can suck it. I’ll make a few general comments on the game itself, but this win is so big, so historic, that it really doesn’t matter how we managed to do it. We just did it. The monkey on our backs has been spanked. Some Native Americans were out on the field before kickoff blessing the field. Will Shields was on drum duty. I promised my friend Gary I would fart on third down to help with crowd noise. Mission Accomplished.

7. For as bad as the defense has been this year, I guess if you’re going to show up and play your signature game of the year, this was a good week to pick for that. Colts had NO FIRST DOWNS for most of the first half, and scored their only first half TD without gaining a first down. The punt block was due to a high snap by Winchester. Just one of those things. A bad special teams play by the Colts near the end iced the game for KC, and we’ll get to that. Who was big today? Everybody on the front defensive wall: Bailey, Nnadi, Chris Jones all were a handful. Edge rush from Ford was good all day, and he played the run much better. Houston had a monster sack and a fumble recovery. He earned his paycheck. Luck officially had no picks, but should have had two: Nelson dropped one that would have been a pick six in the second half, and Murray dropped one that fell right in his lap near the sideline. Luck got sacked three times, and he had only been sacked 18 times in 17 games prior. So that’s bringing some great heat. Plus he had multiple passes batted down. And KC had only one defensive holding penalty on the secondary during garbage time at the very end. All in all a stellar game for the defense. They won the day. Time to crack open another beer.

6. Adam Vinatieri must have contracted Elliot’s Disease. He missed a 23 yard field goal and puked a PAT. Not bad for a guy the national wanks call “the greatest kicker ever.” I think he and Seabass ought to just meet up on a golf course somewhere in Florida and call it a career. Buttkicker was money. Thank God this time we forced Seven Dirty Sanchez punts (versus the dreaded no punt game) and although Colquitt had one blocked, he also did a nice job selling the running into the kicker near the end of the fourth quarter to sustain KC’s final scoring drive. Well done, and helped seal the deal.

5. Special kudos to Damien Williams, who did a pretty impressive impersonation of Kareem Hunt today, without kicking any drunken party chicks. He rushed for 123 yards and a TD. That’s January rushing production. The line gets some love for converting three out of four fourth down attempts, blowing the Colts front wall right off the ball. Fisher had a couple of rough penalties, as did Irving. Mahomes got sacked four times, but he attempted over 40 passes. So some sacks are going to happen when you throw that much.

4. Today was the first time in NFL playoff history that a team had a wide receiver, running back and QB score TDs on running plays. So, although Mahomes didn’t throw for a TD, his three main guys had big days. Hill rushed for a TD and caught 72 yards on what looks to be a still tender ankle. Kelce ate the Colts alive in the middle with 108 yards, and Sammy Watkins return was productive with 62 yards. His second half fumble could have been a momentum changer, but Ford tomahawked the ball from Luck two plays later, Houston fell on it to get it back for Mahomes.

3. Final game stuff to consider: Indy was ZERO for NINE on third down. That’s championship defense. KC held Luck’s offense to 263 total yards and only one offensive TD. Colts had nine penalties, with a bunch of those being defensive guys jumping offsides on Mahomes hard count. You'd think it would be their O-line jumping off, but it was mostly D-line offsides.

2. It was 24-7 at the half. When KC came out and failed to move the ball in the third quarter, I was having ugly flashbacks of last year when Alex Smiff’s anemic offense got shut out the entire second half by the Tits. But this year, both teams were scoreless in the third quarter. And when Luck managed to hit one to TY Hilton (or KY Jelly as I like to call him), we got the ball right back, and rammed it right down their throats. Biggest stat in this game was time of possession. KC was double Indy, 40 mins to 20 mins.

1. I couldn’t help but cry when we won. I don’t usually yell a lot anymore at Arrowhead. I’m old, and I yelled at Stabler, and Fouts, and Elway, and Marino, and Five Head, and Flacco, and others and other and others. I don't have the voice for it anymore. Today in the second half I yelled like when I was 20. And when they actually won a home playoff game for the first time in 25 years I cried. I kissed Mrs. B, and thought about my dad who passed in 2011 a week after we lost to the Ravens with Casshole as our QB. I thought about my friend Derrek who killed himself in March the spring after we lost the debacle to Pittsburgh three years ago. I thought about all the great Chiefs fans in this city and elsewhere, who had endured six straight crushing home playoff losses. The last playoff win was 25 years ago with Joe Montana. And he had to do it in OT. This game was a blowout. It was just what the doc ordered. I don’t want to think much about what happens next weekend, and who we play. I just hope the Pats and Bolts beat the crap out of each other tomorrow, then come what may, we’ll deal with it. Congratulations to all of us on the CP on this wonderful snowy Saturday in KC. It was indeed our finest hour in a long, long, long time.

The Kansas City Chiefs are one step away from playing in a Super Bowl.....and they're the favorites to do so. Amazing.

Enjoy this one (it sounds like most of us have tonight) but we have another massive home game next week! (Man, it feels good to say that.)

Mostly lurk here - enjoy reading your summaries after games. You and all the rest of the die hards deserved today. Can't wait to witness the 1st AFCCG at Arrowhead next week, I expect you have some 20 year old yelling left in you for the biggest game in this stadium's history. If not I will make up for it - I expect to be heard through the television sets.

Sassy Squatch 01-12-2019 11:13 PM

Colts did not allow a 100 yard rusher in the regular season. Williams was the first to do it this season.

Halfcan 01-12-2019 11:16 PM

Nice write up!

tk13 01-12-2019 11:16 PM

I'm happy for all of us, but I'm super happy for the diehard fans like you who've stuck it out all this time.

This team has played for an AFC title before, but it's really great that this team is finally going to play for Lamar Hunt's trophy in Kansas City and all our fans will get to see it in person.

2bikemike 01-12-2019 11:20 PM

Frankly George I don't give a shit where you get your material. I like the way you put it together! Hell if had known farting on 3rd down helped I would do it too!

Seriously though it felt really good to have the team in total control of the game from start to finish. The Defense played an incredible game. Feels great to get the monkey off our backs!

Thanks George, nice write up as always. Looking forward to the AFCCG best things regardless of the outcome of the game. As my Grandma would say, "you're a good egg."

Rain Man 01-12-2019 11:26 PM

I know I've really made it when I get mentioned in a ten things thread. It was nice meeting you today, even if we didn't have much time to talk.

A couple of game notes that I would elaborate on are the batted passes and the offensive line. That may be the most passes defensed by the line I've ever seen in a game. Wow. They're really nice to see, because they lower the stress level when you see the ball flutter or fly upward.

And the offensive line? Holy cow, the offensive line. What a game. It seemed like the coaching staff knew that the line was going to blow the Colts line up whenever we needed a few yards. There was no hesitation in going for it on several fourth downs, and it paid off. And the last drive with Damien killing the clock and the Colts was a thing of beauty. It planted a stake into their evil hearts.

I got a Chiefs sweater the first Christmas I came back to Missouri in 13 and a t shirt this year. Wore both of them to the playoff game.

Excellent stuff man. So glad we all could finally see a good playoff win at home. Defense made me look like an idiot, and I'll take it.

One win from the big dance man. One... fricken... win.

Williams was splitting atoms today. The holes were there, but not every back would have found them.

Thanks for the ID. Awesome.

JohnnyHammersticks 01-12-2019 11:33 PM

Nice summary as usual George, and yeah it was really surprising how easily Williams was getting chunks of yardage right up the middle of their defense. He's got good patience and a good burst. He's really stepped up for us. So has Ward on D.

Mahomes sure is a nice tonic for that feeling of impending doom that one gets after a few decades of watching this team. He's a franchise-changing, once-in-a-lifetime type QB.

2 more wins and...wow.

True dat. He did yeoman's work. The touchdown where his cut made two Colts collide with each other were an homage to Dante Hall.

Today was deeply personal. For all of us. We all remember the people and things in our lives that have intersected with the Chiefs failures of the past.

Today was the first time we were given the tools to move forward.

Thanks for a wonderful write-up, George. You deserve today as much as anyone and I hope you sleep peacefully. Boulevard Wheats dancing in your dreams.

Cheers, buddy. We did it.

Halfcan 01-12-2019 11:45 PM

Hey George,

One thing you didn't mention was on our first TD drive. Some idiot was throwing snowballs and the refs went over to warn Andy- (of a possible penalty on us for fan conduct??) But anyway... Andy went nuclear.

He went marching down the line and yelled up at the crowd to knock that shit off. I havn't seen him so mad.

Andy was fired up and so were the Chiefs. I am sure they were as tired as us about hearing how unbeatable the Colts are.

KChiefs1 01-12-2019 11:45 PM

Considering we are about the same age & have been through the great & heartbreaking with this team...it warms my heart to read your ten things George.

Next weekend will be epic.

LongSufferingToady 01-12-2019 11:50 PM

I just want to say thank you for your game summaries. I pretty much read the comment threads and never post, but I really appreciate your write-ups. I was 13 years old the last time the Chiefs were in the Super Bowl. It's been a long drought. I kinda thought I would never see them return to the Super Bowl in my lifetime. Something akin to the Chicago Cubs of football. But maybe there's a chance to end the ultimate drought.

Fishpicker 01-12-2019 11:51 PM

I loved the distribution of touches in todays game. it seemed Vermeil-esque. I hope Reid will stay committed to the run

Nice write-up, George. The crowd looked nuts all game long. Someday I hope to experience Arrowhead like that.

A couple of minor observations:

I believe that Colquitt has taken 3 game icing running into the kicker penalties - today, at Pittsburgh and a game midseason that I'm currently spacing (I want to say it was the Browns or Bengals). That's nuts considering how few times the Chiefs punted this year.

Funniest moment of the game for me was on the Chiefs last TD. Williams the Younger was pushing into the endzone and Mahomes runs up to help push him in. Morse comes flying in like he was going to push the whole pile himself. At the last moment, he sees he is going to crush Mahomes if he does that and does a mid-air twist to the side and flies over the pile. Can't crush the franchise, you know.

TinyEvel 01-13-2019 12:57 AM

Great to relive the game though your write-up, G-Blow. Thanks and hope you sleep in tomorrow and hit the Advil.

Great write-up as always George. Not to say us younger guys are any less die hard, but we haven't had to endure the miseries of Chiefs fandom as long as some of you. Regardless.. Young, older, KC, DC, USA, Australia... Chiefs kingdom worldwide deserved this. We did it boys! THIS IS OUR LEAGUE. FROM NOW UNTIL THE DAY PATRICK MAHOMES RETIRES, THIS IS OUR LEAGUE.

UK_Chief 01-13-2019 01:42 AM

Thanks George! I’m not a KC native, I’m not even American. But I’ve watched every Chiefs game bar a handful since I lived in KC for a year in 2003. 15+ years of Croyle, Huard, Thigpen, Herm, Pioli, Mark Castle, Alex... Some terrible KC teams and one or two great ones (2003, this one). Some heartbreaking playoff losses in that time as well obviously. It all seems worth the pain looking at where we are now. Would have loved to be at Arrowhead today...

Katie 01-13-2019 01:43 AM

Beautiful write up. Watching this team for the last 25 years has been heartbreaking. You had to have a tear in your eye watching this game.

Very disappointed in the fan who threw the snow ball. We're bettter than that. We are not the f'n raiders.

While I don't often comment on them, I always enjoy your 10 things.

Amazing I got off a 9 hour flight qued 2hours in customs and immigration got out to have text from brother with the half time score, I was so happy I nearly cried. Listened to second half on the radio which was even better just because I could feel the emotion in the crowd over airwaves truly magic.

Love my Chiefs

Pooch 01-13-2019 03:48 AM

I cried as well and I am not typically a crier. I love the Chiefs and I love my dad who made me a fan. He passed away 6 years ago and I couldn’t help thinking how much he would have loved this win. I too look forward to your top tens and I love that I could relate. Have a great week.

Question: Colquitt; rusty and under-used, or time to retire?

Thank you George!

Damien williams player like a star. Couple of huge third and 4th down conversions. And helped us ice the Colts in the 4th even when we knew we were running. Bieniemy and RBs is straight up fire.

Same I just made a account for the game. But I look forward to these threads and have been reading them for five years

Holy hell i had a migraine and was throwing up but i managed to watch it.

I was upset not participating in the game day thread but that was horrific migraine that started twenty minutes before kickoff. I'm feeling better but not great still a lingering headache.

I like blowouts better than close games. Chiefs have a nack for keeping games close but this was well in hand from the beginning.

The defense showed up to play

Storm blew out my internet all day yesterday, so when I woke up I was relieved it was repaired and read this first thing this morning.

Now I'm crying, too.

Thank for these my friend, they are the cherry on top of the victories and the consolation prize for the losses.

Can hardly wait for Sunday. I want the AFC trophy raised in Arrowhead.

Migraines are the worst man. Next time, heat up a wet wash rag and hold that against your closed eyes. Do it until it's gone. Works great for me. Every time. Heat to they eye ballies.

It's the Lamar Hunt trophy that hasn't been held since our last run to the Super Bowl 1969

Good job as usual George. Such a wonderful feeling of satisfaction the morning after a home playoff win.
Kudos to all of you that were there and were a part of it, in spite of the weather!

I just keep thinking about the job Chris Jones did and I am in awe of how the entire team performed.

even before I read this-god bless you GB

cabletech94 01-13-2019 07:10 AM

this game was such a reward.
i waited to read 10 things because i'm so happy right now. i'll admit that i just teared up a little bit, especially reading about your pops and your friend. and the horrible history that us Chiefs fans have suffered for the last 25 years.
this was a true gem. thanks blowfish. can't wait for next week, im on call so i won't be able to have my moonshine that calmed my nerves yesterday.
its been a fun ride this year.

p.s. bonus points for blasting PB.......(what an unsuffereable prick. lol)
