Up, Up With People!

Up. Up with people. You meet em wherever you go. Up. Up with people. They're the best kind of folks we know. If more people were for people, all people everywhere. There'd be a lot less people to worry about, and a lot more people who care.

Video of the Halftime show from the 1976 Super Bowl X featuring Up With People. I dare you to watch all twelve minutes. This made Pat Summerall's alcoholism much worse.

Oh man I remember when UWP came to our town and did a performance because one of the kids in the group was from our town.

That was the closest I've ever come to being on drugs as I ever have been in my life. So weird.

I was asked to join that show when I was 14. I was playing guitar in a church group that did a show with UWP.

They said they were looking for 14 year old kids that could play guitar and sing songs all the way through.

They were too wholesome for me. I wanted to be Led Zeppelin, man.

First job out of college was in a small town, Pinetop, AZ. Got to know some of the locals; played basketball, softball, golf...got to know some guys. We frequented a bar there and one night about 6 dudes were at "our" table. A guy from our group went over and TOLD them to move. They did. He was real impressed with himself...until he found out the guys were with the touring "Up With People" group visiting the area. I laughed my ass off.

Trivia time - who can recall [without googling] the name of the group that parodied Up With People on The Simpsons?

I'd hoped to forget those years. The clothes alone are cringe worthy.

WTF did you do for a job in Pinetop? Whatever it was, cool. Mogollon Rim is beautiful.

People suck

Every halftime show should be a dog catching frisbees. I can't conceive of any better halftime show, or at least one that kids can watch.

Only George Blowfish is bringing this kind of utterly irrelevant retro content to the internet these days.

For his next thread he'll share hot computing tips for your 486.

Laugh all you want...lots of lovin' going on behind the scenes of those tours. Not a bad gig for a young guy. Ah, the days before manscaping and vajazzling.

GloucesterChief 05-16-2018 05:19 PM

You can count on one hand the super bowl half time shows that weren't turds.

Can you even buy a 9600 baud modem anymore?

listopencil 05-16-2018 05:59 PM

This is how Arizona kept people out for so long.

listopencil 05-16-2018 06:01 PM

This is also why so many people did drugs in the 70's.

If I was on the farm, I would need a 56k modem, that maxed out at 32k.

A guy from my high school travelled with Up With People. I never got to see it and I guess I'm ok with that.
