how do you say GIF out loud?

do you say jif like the peanut butter or gif with the "g" sounding like guitar? It stands for Graphics Interchange Format so I lean towards the graphics and guitar "g" sound. I've heard alot of people saying jif so was curious what most people think about it.

Frazod 03-27-2017 08:39 AM

I'd think it would be pronounced with a "G" sound, but what do I know? I used to think "meme" was pronounced "ME ME."

eDave 03-27-2017 08:43 AM

Jif

But it's a g'if.

hard G. I've always thought saying jif was dumb.

frankotank 03-27-2017 12:14 PM

somebody was watching reruns of Big Bang Theory last night!

as Leonard said....G = Graphics....so......

Baby Lee 03-27-2017 12:18 PM

I say it with the 'j' and hearing it with the 'g' irritates me, but I refuse to let myself care overly because Chris Hardwick and Wil Wheaton argue about it all the time and they're two of the most irritating guys on earth, particularly when arguing about nerd stuff.

ToxSocks 03-27-2017 12:45 PM

Weird. I've never even heard of, or considered the idea of pronouncing it with a J.

I'm the opposite. Like BL, it's irritating af. Jif is smooth as peanut butter.

ptlyon 03-27-2017 01:04 PM

Depends on if you're from the south or not

Rhymes with "cream," I think. At least that's how I've heard it. I'm not very good at dorkspeak. :D

This is correct.

Pronounced "meem."

SAUTO 03-27-2017 10:22 PM

It'll always be a MeMe to me

Rasputin 03-27-2017 11:14 PM

Like gift but without the t.

My kids laughed at me when I pronounced it "MeMe". Yeah, "meeem", basically.

And it's Gif, with a hard "g"

Baby Lee 03-28-2017 03:46 PM

I think the hard 'g' version bothers me for two reasons.

First, it started off as soft 'g' for the longest, like a decade, without question until pedants started poindextering it.

More importantly, it's too close to GILF. Sarah Palin and Christie Brinkley aside, that's ****ing disgusting.

probably, for me, since gif and jpg came to prominence around the same time.

Jiff and Jaypeg just rolls of the tongue.

Pants 03-28-2017 05:31 PM

Besides certain proper nouns, are there any words that start with a "G" and are pronounced with a "J"?

BWillie 03-28-2017 05:37 PM

Why can't we just call it a "G" "I" "F" out loud?

And geriatric...

I started designing websites in the mid 90's, it's always been a hard G to me...

Jaypeg has aleays been that way but I always differentiated the hard g because of the letter difference.

JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group so pronouncing it is JayPeg makes sense. But since people want to say things wrong maybe I'll just start calling it a GayPeg.

GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format so I pronounce the G the same way I would in the word graphics.

I had no idea so many people pronounced it wrong. Never heard anyone pronounce it with a J. If I ever do I'll never be able to take anything they say seriously.

Hammock Parties 03-30-2017 06:21 PM

If you pronounce it like the peanut butter you are straight up trash.

ChiliConCarnage 03-31-2017 04:19 AM

I've never heard a person say it with a j sound in real life despite all the talk online.

Rausch 03-31-2017 01:46 PM

At work I normally tell a person to "go check the walrus" and then...
