Child dies at Schlitterbahn in KCK

This is horrifying. Supposed to be a press conference soon with more details. Rumors seem to indicate it happened on the Verrukt, the world's tallest waterslide.

HOW?

Where on that slide is there a spot for something like that to happen??

mikeyis4dcats. 08-07-2016 03:49 PM

Rumor has it the raft caught air and he hit the safety rail and was decapitated

Chiefspants 08-07-2016 03:52 PM

Jesus Christ.

Chiefspants 08-07-2016 03:55 PM

The pictures on twitter are NSFL.

EDIT: Nothing's confirmed. Tweet I saw was an up close picture of what looked like blood on the slide from a firefighter (not even sure if he's local) and he ended up taking it down. There's some conflicting reports about what happened so I won't speculate until we get more clarification.

Deberg_1990 08-07-2016 03:58 PM

Wow.....unreal.

If this is true, ill bet they make major changes to the slide or tear it down.

Very sad.

Ive never ridden this slide, but have rode several other big Schlitterbahn slides at their other parks. Dont really care much for them because they always hurt my back after the initial drop. Always slams my back down hard somewhere.

Coochie liquor 08-07-2016 03:59 PM

Holy shit. So sad.

mikeyis4dcats. 08-07-2016 04:06 PM

Saw reports the Velcro harness or whatever failed

Buehler445 08-07-2016 04:09 PM

Heard that. Sad. So damned sad.

Al Bundy 08-07-2016 04:13 PM

It is a velcro harness, I have ridden the thing 4 times. I loved the ride. Sad for the kid and his family.

Not seeing anything, other than pics from distance of what appears to be blood near the top of the slide.

All i see is a safety net around the top of the whole slide. How did he get decapitated?

LATE EDIT: Nothing's confirmed. Tweet I saw was an up close picture of what looked like blood on the slide from a firefighter (not even sure if he's local) and he ended up taking it down. There are still a few grainy shots out there but people are disputing that its blood, saying the stain has been there for a while. There's all kinds of conflicting reports about what happened so I won't speculate until we get more clarification.

If the safety harness failed and the raft caught air, I'm guessing he caught one of the poles holding up the netting.

jspchief 08-07-2016 04:26 PM

Heard a girl also lost an eye

listopencil 08-07-2016 04:28 PM

There is a video of a run of the ride taken from the POV of a rear facing camera at the feet of the rider. Late in the video, at around the 38 or 39 second mark, there appears to be the beginning of a cage/netting structure that covers a segment of the slide. That's the only point in the ride that I see where a rider could be going fast enough that getting air might lead to a decapitation, and I would imagine that the recirculating pump could bring enough bodily fluid back to the beginning of the ride that there might be a visible red mark of some kind.

Donger 08-07-2016 04:34 PM

The hump in the middle of that thing gave me the willies since the first time I saw it.

What a horrible accident. Thoughts for the family, and the boy.

I see that you are supposed to be at least 14 to ride that thing, too.

There are support hoops the whole way, but only netting on the vertical and hill portion

Actually some other videos I watched do show net the whole way. Must not have been fully installed for the first run I saw

The park better pay up for this family. But they will likely hold his age against him.

Man, what a tragedy. That ride is over. No way they reopen it.

Really? I would guess weight is more important than age.

I know they wouldnt let my son ride alone at one in Corpus because they required at least two rider and 185+ pounds. Im guessing that varies by ride though...

Chiefspants 08-07-2016 04:44 PM

How could SB verify a child's age? It's not like many of them have ID cards, much less a way to carry them with swim trunks.

Donger 08-07-2016 04:47 PM

KCTV's website has removed the age requirement, I guess.

CP is pretty horrible, but this really isn't appropriate. The kid was 12.

Not done at all. Schlitterbahn is a very strong brand.

They might take a financial hit though

cdcox 08-07-2016 05:39 PM

Website says they are closed tomorrow. Season passes still on sale!

Deberg_1990 08-07-2016 05:40 PM

Water coaster. (Think Viking Voyager)

TigeRRUppeRRcut 08-07-2016 06:13 PM

It apparently happened to the son of Representative Scott Schwab. I hope no poor employee was pressured into letting the kid on the ride, I wouldn't want that on my conscience for the rest of my life.

http://fox4kc.com/2016/08/07/boy-12-...hn-water-park/

The park's website said Verrückt is the largest water slide in the world, and riders must be at least 14-years old and at least 54 inches tall. The combined weight of all the people on-board one raft must fall between 400 and 550 pounds. By Sunday evening, Verrückt was no longer listed as an attraction on the park's website.

It's fast and you get a little bit of airtime, not like riding the mamba or something. The velcro straps held my fat butt in there pretty securely.
