Tablet advice

Dumbass me went and dropped my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition tablet on the floor. Now when I can get it to turn on it stays on as long as I don't let is sleep. If I let it go to sleep I have to power it up all over again

Contacted Samsung support and they basically said it would cost me around $200 to get it fixed since it is two years old.

My question is this... Is it worth paying the money to keep it alive? I'm not finding any tablets out there that rival what this beast has specs wise unless I go into the $500 tablets. Considering I spent almost that much on this one, I'm not too thrilled about forking over that much money again after only two years.

What would you guys suggest? Should I look into some of these $300 tablets that are slightly below spec or just pay the repair costs to keep this one going?

007 01-20-2016 12:55 AM

I should add. I will not ever purchase an ipad so we can leave that off the list of suggestions. :)

android all the way baby. I actually like what the Nexus 9 offers save one major problem. No SD card slot.

Miles 01-20-2016 03:12 AM

There were some super cheap Nexus 9 deals on black Friday for $200 that I keep hoping reappear but haven't. I keep looking for a reason to upgrade from my 2013 Android tablet and other than missing that Nexus deal haven't found anything.

Sound like just hunt up a deal or refurbished from Samsung. Spending 200 for an old tablet seems like a loss.

007 01-20-2016 03:58 AM

I'm inclined to just get that nexus because it is pure android. Just not really ready to spend $350 on a tablet. Especially one that doesn't have upgradeable storage.

If you dropped it... the chances are that it is simply a loose ribbon cable that is connected well enough to send your haptic touches through the system but the pin to wake on touch is not making good contact.

If you are gonna toss it anyway I would look for a youtube video showing you where the ribbon connections are and would reseat them before going out and spending more money.

Found this video...

and damn if it didn't work. Thanks for pointing that out. I honestly didn't think the tablet would be that easy to pull apart.

BigBeauford 01-20-2016 09:18 AM

Jeez, you can have your Windows PC, Android Smartphone, and what have you, but when it comes to tablets, just buy an iPad/ipad mini and be done with it. There is nothing as good for consumption. And yes, I know you said no to it, but its silly not to consider it.

Edit: See you fixed it.

I accept Paypal and Chiefs tickets (no pre-season).

Glad it was that easy for you. I bought the wife the same tablet along with the Bluetooth Keyboard/Stand/Case. She loves that thing. Better for her than a laptop. She barely needs her desktop computer anymore.

Glad out got worked out.

For what it's worth, I hate apple, but the iPad is still the best tablet for most.

I don't disagree with either of you that it is a great tablet but I hate their ecosystem and the fact i cannot make it look the way I want. I like to cusotmize. Certain apps I must have are not available in the app store either. KODI being number one. Plus they are just too overpriced for an item that has no customization.

Shaid 01-20-2016 06:03 PM

Hate Apple. I like having the ability to install apps from various sources on Android tablets so I'd never go that route. I also have looked at the Nexus 9 as my future upgrade. I've been running an HP Touchpad with Cyanogen Mod on it but it's getting very dated at this point.

yeah we have two touchpads with CM on them and they are just getting too damn slow now. But they lasted forever.

Shaid 01-20-2016 09:31 PM

Pretty much, we had a snafu and ended up getting 3 at a really good deal. All work fine and never had a crack, etc. happen at all to any of them. Great tablets but yep, too slow now.

I have an iPhone but didn't want an Apple tablet because it is so much easier to drag and drop videos from my hard drive on Android than screwing with iTunes.

I don't use itunes with my ipad.

Can't stand iphones....

Chief Pagan 01-21-2016 02:22 PM

If I was going to stream all of my content, I probably would have gotten an iPad. But I wanted to copy movies on it for airplane trips. Didn't look like there was an easy way to do that. I"m not gung ho about the iPhone, but Android has trade-offs also. Each to their own.

iphones and ipads are an absolute bitch for transferring video to. One of the biggest reasons I hated their product. Everything has to be converted. With android it is literally drag and drop the file and watch it in seconds.

Anybody have strong opinions on tablets? Ipad vs samsung tabs vs google tablets? Or others like lenovo or huawei?

At first, as I mentioned in another thread, I was just looking for a tablet with good palm recognition so I could walk around my classroom and write on a drawing app so students could see me doing equations without having to stand with my back to them. That's still my main goal but I might be looking for personal use as well.

I think I've moved away from the Ipad based on price and gone towards the galaxy tab A or something like that. Intrigued by google but something like the pixel slate is a mile out of what I want to spend.

Any thoughts or experience would be great to hear.

Buehler445 01-03-2019 10:05 PM

What are you using it for?

007 01-04-2019 04:14 AM

PS my self repaired :) Samsung Galaxy Note 2014 Edition is still going strong. Even installed custom firmware running Oreo. Probably the best electronics purchase I have ever made.

I have the same tablet. I use it daily as a kindle. Still running strong.

scho63 01-04-2019 09:40 AM

I think tablets are great under the right environment and your ability to effectively use it enough.

A lot of people like it for reading in bed or on buses or during work breaks. Videos seem to be the biggest usage followed by reading and surfing the web.

The Galaxy Tablets seem pretty good for both functionality and screen quality. I hear their batteries have been greatly improved as well.

I wouldn't get the usage to make it a worthwhile purchase.

mikeyis4dcats. 01-04-2019 10:01 AM

I'm not an Apple fan, but the 32gb Ipads for about $260 is a great deal.

htismaqe 01-04-2019 11:49 AM

I love my tablet. Of course, it's a 12.9" iPad Pro.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 got given away and I'm STILL repairing it to this day.

The main thing is in my classroom. I have a smartboard and I'm tired of having to write everything on the board with my back to the students. I'd like to be able to walk around the room while writing on the tablet.

I have iffy handwriting so I especially can't do that without palm recognition. Seems like only newish tablets with digital styli have that. At this point though I wouldn't mind the tablet also being a device I can use for internet use and google drive.

Side question. My ipad 2(fun when effort is made for grants and then eventually its obsolete technology) projects via apple tv but doesn't fill the entire screen due to 4:3 ratio ect. Do tablets like the galaxy tab project and fill the entire screen with 16:9? I have a large room that makes it hard for people to see in the back if the ipad is only mirroring part of the board with black bars.

Could you elaborate on the tab issue?

TrebMaxx 01-06-2019 03:14 PM

I am digging my Dell 2-1 right now. It can be a tablet or a laptop, comes with a pen which is cool too. Mine is pricey because I went with the i7, SSD and Win 10 Pro. But there are less expensive i5 with Win 10 home version that would work for most people.

Yeah. I can’t help much with that. I have no idea what will interact with your projector/Mimeo/whatever you have.

If you’re going to rely on the pen, you’ll probably want to do better than the Samsung Note, IMO. I have a surface and while I don’t use the pen, the functionality is good. Not sure you’re wanting to drop that kind of coin.

Working on replacing the battery for a third time.

I don't have cable so I'm stuck watching ESPN and NFLN on the tablet. ;)

Ah, that makes good sense. I'd imagine if you ever accidentally viewed pics from the 'women with clothes- no clothes' thread you'd be able to make well informed voting decisions.

No thanks. I already have the iPad and it works just fine. I have a smart TV that runs all the apps I need except NFLN and ESPN and if I really want, I can plug my tablet into the TV via HDMI.
