Chinatown Billboard Will Be Changed After Complaints

http://jimromenesko.com/wp-content/u.../billboard.jpg

A Portland radio station is taking down a billboard in Chinatown after hearing complaints that it was racially insensitive.

The ad announced in big black letters: “We Love You Long Time.”

It’s taken from the 1987 Stanley Kubrick film Full Metal Jacket, where a Vietnamese prostitute solicits an American soldier.

It’s also used in a Black Eyed Peas song.

More at the link.
No one thought "this is a bad idea" before it went up?

MahiMike 10-31-2013 01:41 PM

We should just have blank bill boards so that we don't offend anyone.

Donger 10-31-2013 01:41 PM

Or perhaps billboards that don't make Asian prostitution references in Chinatown would be a good start.

Now that you mention it, it is indeed a great tourist draw. But this isn't a tourism billboard.

Q: What do you call a Chinese woman with one leg longer than the other?
A: Irene.

Rim shot.

Dayze 10-31-2013 02:15 PM

that's not offensive.
"We Ruv You Rongtime" would be offensive.

scho63 10-31-2013 02:37 PM

I'm always stunned at how things like this get approved and moved through the process at big companies.

I guess no one responded to the email asking everyone in the marketing department "Do you think this is a good or bad idea?"

Sometimes I think big companies get this sort of thing because they assign some junior person to some marketing element with minimal supervision, and forget to check up on things.

Someone who does market research or focus groups could use this as a great example of what can go wrong when an advertiser doesn't understand the market.

Yes, because obvious humor being milked from a great movie line is exactly the same as intending racism.

Nobody is responding from the "Get a ****ing sense of humor" department, either, apparently.

You don't think that the Asian community as a whole might get tired of and/or offended at the "we love you long time" stereotype?

Or that perhaps the Chinese community could be pissed that they're being lumped in with the Vietnamese hookers and see this as a "Vietnamese, Chinese? They all look the same" kind of statement?

I think every community has a percentage of people who are born with a stick up their ass. I'm just not one who really gives a **** how those assholes feel about anything. I'm not going to cry over a "white man can't jump" billboard, either.

Okay, I'm embarrassed to admit that it took me a good three minutes to get this joke...

Donger 10-31-2013 03:14 PM

This still isn't anywhere near as funny (or offensive) as the news gal in SF reading out the fake names of the pilots on that plane that crashed.

The guy in marketing that came up with this should get a raise. Instead of getting a little local advertising, the station is now getting national attention. Freaking Genius..........
