Broncos hire Vic Fangio as head coach
https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...as-head-coach/
Apologies folks, looks like our crack news team got this in the donk megathread. Well, maybe this is worthy of it's own thread? The Broncos have their new head coach, and the Bears need a new defensive coordinator. Vic Fangio has been hired as the Broncos’ next head coach, ESPN reports. Fangio has been the Bears’ defensive coordinator for the last four seasons and was the 49ers’ defensive coordinator for four seasons before that. He’s previously been a defensive coordinator with the Panthers, Colts and Texans. He has a good reputation as a defensive coach. There was some talk, however, that he might not be a strong candidate for a head coach, as he hasn’t been one before and, at age 60, he could have faced some age discrimination in a league where younger head coaches seem to be all the rage. Fangio beat out Mike Munchak for the top job in Denver. Now he’ll take over a Broncos team that has had back-to-back disappointing seasons. And the Bears will hope they can find a coordinator who can be as effective in Chicago as Fangio was. |
Welp
|
Lololol they just needed a defensive minded guy to turn it all around. Looking forward to the hiring another turd in three years.
|
Kubiak back at OC. Lulz
This seems like it could be a decent short term fix, but I’m not sure beyond that. Elway still has to find a QB, still has to find good players much more than he has so far. |
Yawn. Still have a nothing at QB. Until they don't, it won't matter.
|
LMAO Fangio was so desperate for the job he had to let Elway hire his staff for him.
|
LMAO
|
Good luck to bundle of sticksio and the Cheating Donks.
I am sure he will get used to losing to the Chiefs twice a year, just as his predecessors did. |

Probably the best coach Elway could have picked. Unfortunately. He has a lot of fire.
|
Everytime the Eagles needed to score, they scored. Mack was 100% invisible in the biggest game of the year. I look forward to Radio Part 2 in Denver.
|
Smart move. It's a defensive league now.
|
Two more 6-10s and he will be sent packing, too.
|
Not a bad hire or coaching staff.
...doesn't mean shit until they find a QB. |
I don't know that it's that crazy, but it's funny that he's essentially trying to win the way the Chiefs did for so long.
When the Donks had the offense in the division the Chiefs seemed to always try and build to beat it with d coaches and such. |

I can't even post a picture of a bundle of sticksgio from GTA because of the filter. LMAO

Doesn't solve their offensive woes. GG

If it works out, that sucks. I was totally wrong about Arians a few years ago. But I'm skeptical of a coach this old, this experienced, with this much a track record of really really good success that never sniffed a HC offer and not for lack of trying. Because most of them never became head coaches for a reason. And even now, he gets a job only if he agrees to be neutered on offense.
He may install a nasty defense and he's got a lot of talent to work with. That's scary. But it could end up being a bust too. He's done something to make GMs nervous in the past. |
bundle of sticksio!

Coach bundle of sticksio!
|
Probably a solid hire. Should help them with the annual competition for second place in AFC West.

Was hoping they'd hire Munchak. Whatever, Fangio isn't winning shit w/o a QB and he has no experience developing one either. They'll be mediocre for a few seasons and then on to the next one.

Elway continues to compete for Worst GM Over The Last 5 Years.
This is a ridiculous hire, IMO. Maybe he's trying to make Von feel better about the future. FAX |
I need to do some research on this to find ways to ridicule him. Right now, all I've got is, "How stupid do you have to be to accept a job with John Elway?"
Though honestly, that's a pretty good start. |
Fangio is a really great defensive mind...not sure it will work out at HC, but he turned the Niners D around in 1 season...Bears have looked very promising as well under his tutelage.

Offensive league?
Hire a defensive coach. ROFL |
7 of the 8 remaining playoff head coaches are former offensive coordinators. Only Bill Belichick is a former DC.
Of those 7, only Sean McVay was never an NFL QB coach. |

I think Fangio's a great coach. The only thing that's ridiculous is if Elway rolls into next season fully committed to Keenum without drafting a QB. |
The only QB's Kubiak has won a Super Bowl with is Steve Young, John Elway, and Peyton Manning.
He didn't draft or develop a single one of those QB's. Unless the Broncos stumble upon another elite franchise QB who their original franchise didn't sign then this hire isn't going anywhere. |

Kubiak at OC is kinda bizarre. Retired for health issues, now back and they’ll have a Super Bowl winning head coach who is Elway’s best buddy reporting to a 60 year old rookie head coach?

Fangio by all accounts seems like a great guy, solid resume - is he a HC? We'll find out. |
Quote:
Elway and Kubiak have been on this ride together for a LOOONG time. There's no doubt Kubiak knows offense. Has the game passed him buy? Maybe. If Fangio can get the right DC in place, do his thing with the defense and provide just the right leadership overall while Kubiak runs the offense - maybe that's a solid mix. Kubiak damn near killed himself twice in his HC stints in HOU and Denver... maybe OC is just the right amount of crazy health-wise that he will be able to perform well and not break down. |
Denver is just going to keep hiring DC's when that is not the way the league is going...smart stuff.

He's had good defenses from time to time, to be sure ... when he had superior players. But so did Goonther ... when he had superior players. It's a head-scratching hire at best. Unless (as I mentioned), Elway is trying to placate his defensive vets (and their moms) who have vocalized their frustration with the team's direction. FAX |
Never been HC before but at age 60 seems like a good ripe age to become one for the Donkies ROFL
|
Well, they could have hired anyone (lets be honest) that was available and there would have been a lot of negative talk around here.

Definitely a reactionary hire. Picked him primarily to combat his main competition, Mahomes. I would have called it a great hire if Elway found a top tier OC but Kubiak isn't shit. Expect a bunch of mediocre seasons with one playoff visit before their both deposed.

He's better than Vance Joseph but having the 20th, 23rd, and 8th ranked defenses in points allowed before bringing in a top 2 defender in Mack. Not really blowaway.
|
I would've been impressed if they brought in Kris Richards. I think he's going to be a star.

I think Elway has exactly what he wants. Kubiak will run the offense and basically report to Elway while Fangio will run the rest of the team.

rinse & repeat
wait 2 seasons rinse & repeat |

Thanks captain obvious |

Elway was probably smart here, at least in his own mind, in that he gets to keep an offensive coach that he believes in and gets a very good defensive mind that can run the day to day stuff. |
