Alex Smiff says Mahomes making him and former Chiefs QB's look bad...
"Tell him to slow down," said Smith, who was the Chiefs' starter the past five seasons before he was traded to Washington in the offseason to clear the way for Mahomes. "He's making us all look bad."
Smith presumably was speaking on behalf of all the NFL's starting quarterbacks. Mahomes leads the NFL in touchdown passes with 29, six more than second-place Andrew Luck of Indianapolis. Mahomes also leads in passing yards, with 2,901. But Smith also could have been speaking for the other 34 quarterbacks who started at least one game for the Chiefs in the team's 59-season history before Mahomes took over this year. Mahomes, leading the 8-1 Chiefs, is already rampaging through the team's passing record book. He is two touchdown passes away from breaking the 54-year-old record for single-season touchdown passes. Len Dawson threw 30 in 1964. Mahomes is also on pace to break Trent Green's record for single-season passing yards with one game left in the season. Green threw for 4,591 yards in 2004. Here's what three of the best Chiefs quarterbacks of all time had to say about Mahomes as he is putting together the best QB season in team history. Alex Smith Smith was teammates with Mahomes last season and had a front-row seat for Mahomes' preparation as a rookie, even though he played in just one game. "Pat has put in the work," Smith said. "He was there so early every single day, preparing himself, learning. I think he heard that none of those Air Raid guys have been able to convert into pro guys, and he worked so hard I think to be ready for this moment. It's not by accident. Every day last year, he was in the building. They had him in there [at] 6 a.m. I told him, 'Get your sleep, too.'" Smith had his best statistical season for the Chiefs last year, when he led the NFL in passer rating and had a career-high 26 touchdowns. Mahomes had 26 in his first eight games this season and three more in Sunday's win over the Cleveland Browns. "Nuts, absolutely ridiculous," Smith said when asked to put Mahomes' touchdown numbers in perspective. "You could see right away the upside Pat had and not just the arm talent. I think more so it's his processing speed. He can process what he sees really fast. You knew he was going to make some wow plays. Everybody expecting he would maybe have some learning ones, too. His decision-making is so good. He's ripped ‘em when they're there, when he sees it and throws it. At the same time, when it's not there, he hasn't forced any. That's been the most impressive thing to me from afar. But the numbers? They're just absurd. Alex Smith has always been all class.

Sorry Alex, he's not making you "look" bad, you ARE bad.

Alex Smith gets to revel in Mahomes greatness. He's playing it smart. It would be stupid of him to be anything but complimentary and helpful to Mahomes.
He'll go down in history forever as the veteran QB mentor for the GOAT. |
How does CBS get the game when Arizona is away?
|
Cool to hear his perspective on the work ethic Mahomes has. That’s what will elevate him to all-time great.

You know, this is such a whirlwind of craziness. It’s all happening so fast that I don’t think I’m even processing it correctly. It’s almost as if I’m already taking it for granted, to the point that a 300 yard, four TD game can seem pedestrian. But, yesterday, I sat there and watched an instagram video of the amazing pass and catch to Kelce in the endzone surrounded by Browns defenders, and I literally started tearing up. It hit me so hard that we are witnessing Chiefs history... perhaps NFL history, and it’s happening to US! It felt insanely satisfying when the Royals finally put together an amazing run and won the World Series. But, the Chiefs have always had a little bit bigger place in my heart, and I just can’t believe this is happening. I couldn’t be more proud to be a Chiefs fan!

Smith isn't bad. He just isn't great. Matt Cassel, Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen, Damon Huard were bad. |

The announcers and tv crew last week had one of the worst games I've ever heard called. The legit had no idea what was going on multiple times, showed the wrong replays. Arians was awful.

He's bad this year. 23rd in QBR 24th in completion percentage 22nd in yards 26th in TDs 28th in YPA 30th in YPC Which is what he basically was 4 of his first 5 seasons in KC...but once again, defense and running game make people think his shit doesn't stink. |
Someone either likes Bruce Arians in the broadcasting booth or early 19th century newsboy hats. But not enough courage of their conviction to speak up about it. FACE ME NEWSY!

If you want some quality reading then go to the Redskins forum and take a look at some of those Alex Smith topics. I feel their pain.
|
he aint here...i don't think about him.
got a lot better qb sec |
He gets credit from me for not losing to the Donkos 4 times and starting the current streak.
He also showed a higher level of professional 'class' than others have done in a similar situation. His limitations were apparent but so were his many other positive qualities. and I've never been fond of the Redskins so thanks for the trade and your Chief's service. ;) |
Alex doesn't really have limitations, that's what's infuriating about him. He's just a ****ing pussy.
The guy was a #1 pick. He's got all the talent in the world. The shoulder injury may have ****ed up his arm, but arm strength is overrated and he's certainly got enough juice to make any throw necessary to be a great QB. He just chooses not to. |

Nothing wrong w/ that. KC fans know Smith sucks. An avg at best, game managing play-it-safe QB. But there is no longer any reason to beat that dead horse anymore...let Redskins fans cry in their beers watching 3yd passes on 3rd n 8. Will not miss any of that shit..that I can tell you. BUT... He ended up being the perfect Ying to Mahomes' Yang. Practice/prep like Smith, let it rip down the field w/ Mahomes talent/arm confidence, and you got yourselves a pretty darn good QB. I'll never question Smith's work ethic, leadership, or ability to properly prepare. Never thought Smith went into games looking lost like he was just flat out unprepared. The guy has been in this league long enough to have seen just about anything you could throw at the guy. He was just too timid in the pocket and never took any chances, not until just last season. The great ones do take the chances and make big plays...that was Smith's greatest fault. Unless you have a great defense, 85 Bears, 00 Ravens, 02 Bucs etc...QB's like Smith aren't going to win you shit. |

But I'm happy as hell he was our QB. Without his consistency and ability to at least keep us in contention, we might have reached for a QB years ago and we'd be sitting here trying to lie to ourselves that Jameis Winston/Mariota or some other bum that was drafted the past few drafts is a franchise qb. Smith was good enough to let us wait out for the perfect QB. Posted via Mobile Device |

Well at least now we know that high dollar sage advice and learnin' that was going on:
"Get your sleep too". -Alex Pudwhackin', Sleepwalkin' Smith, year of our Lord 2017 |
I always think of Mr Smee from Peter Pan when I think of Smith. That is all

1-5 in playoffs.

If Smith was as bad as some of you argue, we wouldn't have gotten what we did trading Smith at this point in his career, nobody is going to expect him to turn over a new leaf. But whatever. I'm thrilled the team gave up on game manager and rolled the dice for a QB with a huge upside. |

Smiff is an accurate reflection of the mediocrity of the league overall, a complete and total, "let's just all save our jobs"-kind of QB that offers nothing to fans who want to see their team actually DO something in life. I generally feel nothing for other fan bases, but Washington has my complete sympathy. |
Alex Smith is the blueprint for how to stick around and make a lot of money. Check it down, make a few plays with your legs, never take a risky throw. You may never win shit in the playoffs but you can Marty your way to a long career.

SF stuck w/ him through a bunch of coaching staff changes. Usually that doesn't happen, esp through as many coaches he's been through. I believe if Alex had played for Philly instead of McNabb (just for sake of argument), his early days of his career would have been much better. And once he finally settled down w/ a winning QB friendly coach, he got inj and then was replaced with a flashier guy with the hot hand. So really, all things considered, Alex is extremely lucky to have lasted as long as he has. His NFL career path and environment he's had to deal w/ is a flat out recipe for disaster for any young player, let alone a ****ing QB who went 1st overall in the draft. He choked when it mattered other than the Indy playoff game. He never got KC fans a SB, but he got us the next best thing...he helped groom a super talented QB who was ready his 1st start ...someone that could lead us to multiple SB's down the road...hell maybe even this yr. And for that we owe Alex Smith a huge thanks. |

Fun Alex fact: he’s neither relinquished a lead this season nor led his team back from a deficit of any kind.
