Loading up this defensive staff is just awesome.

If they are well coached, the Chiefs might have a dynasty in the making. I’ll have tons of confidence in our SB chances this upcoming season because of it alone.

DC in waiting? I doubt anyone expects Spags to stay more than two seasons, and I expect Andy hired him because they both need each other and they both know that Spags will get another shot at a HC job if he can help get the Chiefs a Super Bowl ring. House has put himself in the perfect place. Andy is apparently a king maker and helps his staff go out and flourish. House will be the next DC up after Spags leaves. House will be a DC for a few seasons before he may go try and be a HC as well, or he may flame out and suck as a DC, but he will have learned. This is a perfect marriage.

edit: ****. I'm stoked for this guy to coach Jones (and everybody else).

Danguardace 02-08-2019 09:43 AM

Yep. This crossed my mind as well, and it is a great situation for both the Chiefs and House.

Hog's Gone Fishin 02-08-2019 09:55 AM

I'm worried this can cause some confusion with some of our younger players. If they get an interception and they know to take it to the House, where do they go? Sidelines?

Titty Meat 02-08-2019 09:56 AM

Great hire. First he reached out to Pierce another college coach. I'm wondering if he's trying to get coaches who are familiar with the spread game since thats what the NFL has started to become. Great hire.

"House’s inside linebackers – both of whom were first-year starters – contributed significantly to UK’s success. Sophomore Jordan Jones led the team in tackles (109) and tackles for loss (15.5) while earning second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors. He also became an adept blitzer with four quarterback sacks and a team-high nine QB hurries. Junior Courtney Love was third on the team in tackles with 76 and his season was highlighted by the fumble recovery that set up the game-winning drive at Louisville."

I just read that House was with Spags on the Rams staff in 2009-11.

Also Kentuckys defense under House ranked 6th in the nation in points allowed 16.8

I don't think I would consider myself to be one in the "butt hurt" group, but I certainly understand their position. Chiefs fans deservedly wanted a new hire that would bring in a new culture to a very weak defense. The assumption was/is that a younger guy that is hungry would be the best option. Spags is not young, but I do think he is hungry to get back to head coaching. There is nothing wrong with him wanting to use the Chiefs to springboard to a future job. I am just hoping that it is a strong enough motivation for him to bust his ass, the players' asses, the assistant coaches asses because the DC job under Reid is a known place where one can coach from a position of security and leisure no matter the outcome on the field.

With all that bullshit said, House is the type of guy that those "butt hurt" fans wanted. He has a great resume of success with stud players. Now, I do not know if he helped make the players or if the players help make him, but he appears to have his shit together and understand the modern game of football.

The Chiefs have hired Dave Merritt as their new defensive backs coach, per Yates (Twitter link). Merritt was actually hired as the Jaguars’ assistant defensive line coach earlier this offseason, but Jacksonville has apparently let him out his contract in order to pursue a better opportunity. The 47-year-old Merritt worked under new Kansas City defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo in New York, working as the Giants’ defensive backs coach alongside Spags from 2007-08. The Chiefs haven’t announced whether incumbent secondary coaches Emmitt Thomas and Al Harris will be retained.

Read up a bit on House when he was being talked about as a possible replacement for Greg Schiano at OSU. Schiano since moved on to the Pats as their DC.

Having a successful college DC, with experience game planning again rhe spread, coaching up a position, sounds like a solid move...

Pierce played for Spags

Kiimo 02-08-2019 11:58 AM

House is apparently very successful coaching against the spread. With the way the NFL is heading this seems like one of those “ahead of the curve” hires. Man it feels good to be a trend-setter and not a crusty old stubborn mule team for once.

Josh Allen is Quentin Nelson last year. I dream about somehow moving up. But no chance.

Seems to really focus on fundamentals and technique. Good communication skills.

htismaqe 02-08-2019 01:48 PM

The only Kentucky defender I could see the Chiefs being in on is Lonnie Johnson. He's long but lacks fundamentals. He's a guy they could target at the end of the 2nd if they don't take a CB sooner (or they want two).

Kentucky is a basketball school. That's why you don't know anything about them. :)

And that's actually the point. Kentucky was super competitive in the SEC this year, in large part because their defense only allowed 17ppg.

Chiefs' defense only allows 17 ppg next year and there'll be some new big boy trophies on display at Arrowhead.
