Fox: The X-Files

Seem like I'm about 23 years behind on this one?

(Jesus, 23 years?!)

Apparently not. Fox is in talks with Chris Carter to bring it back, including having David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise Scully and Mulder. Nothing creative yet, just seeing how schedules line up, but still...

Also having (unrelated of course) talks about bringing back Prison Break and running a Kiefer-free version of 24 (not sure how that would work; he was that snow).

notorious 01-17-2015 05:08 PM

Yes, this is good.

Deberg_1990 01-17-2015 05:46 PM

Interesting.........

Not sure how much demand there is for it though? That last movie was a flop and was fairly awful.

keg in kc 01-17-2015 05:51 PM

I would imagine there's a lot of people my age (@40) who'd tune in for nostalgia if nothing else. Whether they can maintain a full series on that who knows. I'm not sure this kind of stuff is as cool to the younger crowd now as it was then.

DaneMcCloud 01-17-2015 09:24 PM

I absolutely loved that show until the first movie. After that, it was just so inconsistent and I didn't bother watching the second movie until years later on cable. I found it to be barely watchable.

I'd love to see episodes like seasons 1-4, not so much MOW, but interesting investigations and government cover ups. But the entire alien thing was nearly as bad as Lost's overall arc, which was course, was awful.

I have all the seasons on DVD up until like 9 or 10 and haven't watched them in half a decade. Thanks for the reminder!

I would think that if they did a 12 episode season, like 24 Live Another Day, there would be some serious interest but I'm not sure about a full 24 season order, especially with Vince Gilligan running Saul.

Yea, basically when they moved production from Vancouver to LA, the show steadily dropped in quality.

keg in kc 01-17-2015 09:55 PM

The second movie was terribad but there was some good stuff in seasons 5-7.

If I did it I'd focus more on the alien stuff and the cigarette smoking man and friends. Still do monster of the week but make the government conspiracy stuff more prominent.

Twilight Zone The Movie doesn't live up to the episodes that preceded it either. I wasn't big into X-Files, but from what I saw, a lot of its allure was the ability of the episodic form to play with moods and structure, while still moving forward with a meta-story,

Buffy and Fringe tried similar things.

The first four seasons were awesome, especially for the time. I'd recommend checking them out with an open mind. Some episodes are absolutely lifetime classics.

Probably because Serling was dead by that time and many of the Twilight Zone episodes were written by him or other great sci-fi writers like Bradbury and Matheson.

Deberg_1990 01-18-2015 11:18 AM

I love the original Twilight Zone. I actually introduced my kids to them this year on Netflix. They loved them. Of course its dated, but the stories and themes hold up incredibly well.

DJJasonp 01-18-2015 08:30 PM

Loved the show.....have friends that liked the monster episodes more than the main alien story line.

I was the opposite.....and got frustrated when the "near end of the world" would happen one week, and you might not get back to that storyline for a month.

Would watch again if they bring it back. Hell..next year we have Twin Peaks coming back...could be a great trip down 90s memory lane next year!

Like most scifi style shows, once the writers move from independent one off episodes to an overall story arc, the show starts the down hill slide. Either the talented writers price themselves out of a job, or the writers get lazy.

Would love to see new X-File episodes, but only if they follow the model of the early seasons. I watched a few episodes from the first season last summer and they held up surprisingly well.

What? Nothing could be further from the truth. I don't think you understand how a Writer's Room works.

Valiant 01-19-2015 03:36 PM

Great first couple seasons, show turned to absolute shit in the later years. To me it got better the last season but by then it was too late and viewers probably gave up on it. The movie was bad also, I think bringing it back would tarnish it. I mean do not get me wrong, I would love it to come back and be great. But.

I hope they can retcon the Lone Gunmen back in. Actually just heard a podcast with Dean Haglund talking about all this (he doesn't know any more than we do...). That show's pilot episode is still freaky, how prescient it was with regard to 9/11. Written by Vince Gilligan, as I recall.

I liked Millennium, really liked Lone Gunmen (one of the original wtf fox cancellations as i recall, the ratings were fine) but Harsh Realm never did it for me.

Yea, Harsh Realm I don't think I ever even watched?

Millennium I watched a few times, it was pretty dark if I remember right?

Lone Gunman was decent, from what I remember? It wasn't on too long?

One show I liked a lot from the mid 90s was 'Space, Above and Beyond'. FOX cancelled too soon........but that's nothing new I guess.

DaneMcCloud 01-19-2015 09:28 PM

Millienium had a great premise but they blew it early with all of the Revelations stuff. Once that happened, they backed themselves into a corner and the show fell apart rather quickly.

I don't remember the series all that well, been too many years, but Lance Henriksen as Frank Black was always good.

Yeah, space above and beyond was another show that died too young.

Wait, there was a second movie? I was a big XFiles fan. Not so much once Duchovney left, though. Robert Patrick was okay but it just wasn't the same. Very violent, graphic and cinematic. But if you loved the Hannibal Lecter lore, whether in the movies or in the books, you'll be pleasantly surprised it made it to network TV.

Can't give a blanket recommend because the subject matter is quite strong, but if Hannibal is already your bag, the series will delight you beyond what you'd imagine.

Also, it's very visual and very immersive, so it's not a show to take on half-heartedly. ie, 'pop a bowl of popcorn and settle into your easy chair' watching, not 'fold the laundry and do a crossword' watching.

I managed a movie theater while I was in college, and when that came out I showed it the night before, all amped up, with some friends that weren't X-Files fans. I was actually embaressed after it was over. Even shrunken down to a MOW episode, it would still be one of the worst of all-time. Right next to the gargoyles episode.

Started re-watching the series. Actually has been a few years, on purpose. Just finished Redux, and Redux II. What a hell of a 3 episode arch those are.

Mennonite 01-01-2016 10:06 AM

Awesome show. Very excited to see it back. In retrospect, the whole Mytharc was a complete waste of time. Carter had no idea where he was going with the story. When I occasionally rewatch the series, I just skip over those episodes. Still love those Monster of the Week episodes though.

Complete opposite for me. I skip the MotW episodes and just watch the alien arc episodes. I don't think it starts to unravel until around the end of season 7, when Mulder is finally abducted. I don't remember much of the mythology from seasons 8 and 9, although I do remember hating the finale. But as much as I liked Robert Patrick as an actor, the show fell apart when Duchovny went part time and he took over.

58kcfan89 01-01-2016 01:31 PM

Just wanted to pop in here & say thanks to Netflix I'm addicted to the X-Files. I was a kid during the original run but am about halfway through S1 and I'm hooked. I'm hoping to just watch the series all the way through but that might take awhile (and it sounds like I should just avoid the movies).

Hope the new episodes are as good as the ones I'm watching.

Mennonite 01-01-2016 03:21 PM

If you like the alien conspiracy story line, you should like the movie.

I'm in the minority, but I think the second movie was pretty good. I think a lot of people were expecting another alien plot and were disappointed. I don't have any faith in the shows creators to "fix" the alien conspiracy story, so I was more than happy when they ignored it.

keg in kc 01-01-2016 03:44 PM

I thought the second movie was terrible. But just because it was bad. I'd have been fine with non-mythology if it had been a good movie.

As I recall, only the first and last episodes of the new season are mythology, so it's going to mostly be motw. And they're changing up the mythology in some way.

Perfect time for the show to come back, in any case. Government mistrust at an all time high and we all know we're being watched by shadowy figures 24/7.

Yes, even as a stand-alone episode, that plot was horrible. How they spent that much time away and came up with that is one of the things in life that truly, truly, makes you wonder how people are in charge of things and you are not.

Also, to piggyback off your other post, I agree that season 6 is INCREDIBLY underrated. It is 7, imho, that the ship starts going off course. 6 gets lumped in due partially to being filmed in LA, and having the feel of 7-9. Oh and the Diana Fowley disaster. But mythology and MOW are all there in 6. Triangle and Arcadia are two of my all-time favorites. Just the pacing and filming of Triangle, plot aside, is gold. Drive, SR 819, the Unnatural. I could go on.

Two Fathers and One Son is the near culmination of the Mytharc, and are fantastic. The problem is that with the end of One Son, the difficulty in continuing the mythology becomes hard to overcome. Couple that with Duchoveny leaving and the feel of Vancouver gone, it was a tough ask.

I don't think there is any debate that seasons 1-4 are pure gold. If you like 1, there is literally no way you won't love 2-4. 5-6 are also great imo, but opinions start to differ there. You should watch the movie Fight the Future, which happens after the season finale of 5, and before the season premiere of 6. Even if you don't love the movie, it's important for the plot.

Enjoy. I'm sure we would all love to relive seeing them for the first time. I watched them as a young teenager with my father and step-mother on the weekends. Quite literally was the first bridge after my parents divorce.

Mennonite 01-02-2016 09:19 AM

I loved the first three seasons. Season 2 is my favorite, but 3 is almost as good. Season 5 is my least favorite; "Folie À Deux" being the only really good episode.

6 has some good stuff like "Monday" (which features the daughter of Carol Burnett and the son of Billy Drago) "Terms Of Endearment" (with Ash) and "Drive" (Heisenberg).

Seasons 7, 8, and 9 feature some solid, if not always spectacular, Monster of the Week episodes. I think those final seasons are underrated by a lot of the fans.

Oh, and I liked the plot of the second flick.
