If you have some time to kill check out Super on Netflix. I thought it would be a light comedy but it turned out darker than I could have imagined. If you can make it through the first have the second half is worth it ;). Not your typical superhero movie to be sure.

Seems like there's an oversaturation of super hero movies, really.

That and mindless CGI action movies. Sadly, it's just a reflection of the stupid times we live in. I look forward to Batman v. Superman as enthusiastically as I would a chance encounter with my ex-wife.

I saw a preview scene when it came out where
Spoiler!
I thought that was pretty jarring.

Posted this last week in the Hannibal thread, but I would highly recommend The Hunt. It looks like it will be at the Tivoli in KC (listed as coming soon.) If you need a break from the summer explosions, and don't get me wrong, I really enjoy big sci fi and action movies too, be sure to catch Mads Mikkelsen in The Hunt. He gives a really extraordinary performance.

It is about a false accusation in a small Danish town and how an innocent man who believes that the truth cannot help but come out is nearly destroyed by the rest of the towns actions. Well worth the subtitles, and there are breaks of English in it.

I saw Fruitvale Station on Sunday. I thought it was really good. Michael Jordans kid is a really good actor and this movie could launch his career.

While his father's name is Michael Jordan, he's not the famous basketball player/Charlotte Hornet's owner.

Watched "Savages".

Holy. ****ing. Stupid.

Yup that happens pretty early on, just a hint more to come with the "O snap!" moments.

I know it came out a while back but Wanderlust was just awful.

Only God Forgives.

Refn is the new Kubrick. Stud.

That explains a lot. The whole time I'm watching it I'm thinking he looks nothing like his old man.

Watched Gangs of New York.

It was OK. Not really as good as I thought it would be and about 30 minutes too long.

Kind of similar to The Departed except Departed is about 10x better.

The only thing wrong with Gangs is Cameron Diaz. She can't hold her own with Daniel Day Lewis and only a little bit with DiCaprio. There are some moments in that movie though that give me goosebumps when I see them. The draft riot overtaking the gang fight is brilliant, from the standoff being interrupted by a non sequitur elephant to the grappling stabbing fight in a cloud of ash. And then there is Brendan Gleeson who steals every scene he is in, not to mention the aesthetic which has the look of a political cartoon, how I would imagine newspapers would have illustrated the look of a man like Bill the Butcher, but with color, too. So awesome! The editing is great too, possibly the best since Silence of the Lambs.

I always try to squint at Cameron Diaz a little and imagine it is Samantha Morton and then the movie is nearly perfect. Aside from her, this is a highly underrated movie. Perhaps the high concept style was a bit heavy handed for some and pretty different to most of his films.
