Not to mention I'd rather have a QB that's focused on honing his craft than participating in a glorified scrimmage that does nothing for him or his future team. That shows maturity to me and fits the description of him being a true student of the game.

The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Yes, it shows maturity that he was working with Weinke.

But he OBVIOUSLY skipped the Senior Bowl because there wasn't a chance it would help him.

Does that make him chickenshit? Maybe.

Does it make him SMART? ABSOLUTELY.

Every QB that played in the Senior Bowl now has question marks they didn't have before the game. None of them improved their stock.

Geno Smith carried the worst defense in college, and without him they don't win 3 games....

but his coach didn't bang a sorority whore in the film room, so he doesn't have any excuses according to whichever version of troll is currently posting here

Right!

I think a lot of the true fans only watched the Kansas State game and assume Smith played that way the rest of the season.

No, he didn't continue completing 80 percent of his passses, because they played teams with a pulse once they got past Baylor and into conference play (well, except for the team that let him go 23/24 for 400). But he still was making plays, completing a high percentage of his passes, making good decisions, limiting turnovers, and completing throws to all areas of the field.

If Geno Smith had played for Oklahoma, the talk would center around how he was a dead ringer for Sam Bradford, but with more arm strength and better feet/athleticism. And he'd be the unquestioned No. 1 pick.

I agree that my post was geared towards the positive side of things, but what I put in bold is the general result of people that attend the Senior Bowl. It's merely a thing to keep attention on the NFL up to the draft.

No scouts take what they see to heart at the Senior Bowl. It can only make them go back and reevaluate tape that they have already watched and see if they missed anything.

Prospects like Geno are already getting the full evaluation. Improved performance at their Pro-Days and the Combine will yield the same results. Why not improve when you have two more chances to showcase your talents?

Rob Rang is on 810 right now.

Said Barkley and Smith both helped themselves tremendously by skipping the Senior Bowl.

Said if the Chiefs are going BPA it will be Joeckel but he said the BPA thing is pretty silly. Look at Cleveland, how many playoff games has Joe Thomas won? Exactly.

Said he thinks the Chiefs could take either Barkley or Geno.

Barkley is solid, Geno has more upside. He said if you hit on Geno, you could have a legit pro bowler at the position. He sees Barkley having the higher floor though.

Guys generally go to the Senior Bowl to improve their stock. If your stock is already high enough, it doesn't make much sense to go.

And scouts absolutely do take the evaluations at the Senior Bowl seriously.

It's how Tamba Hali ended up as our 1st round pick.

Rang thinks Joeckel compares to Joe Thomas.

He thinks Joeckel is a BIG upgrade over Branden Albert.

He doesn't like the idea of tagging Albert because he thinks he's a good, but not elite, LT.

Then he jumped the shark and basically said that Johnny Manziel is going to "return to earth" next year without Joeckel blocking for him.

He emphasized again that the Chiefs need to get a QB because a QB is so much more important than LT.

And then he jumped the shark again, suggesting that Matt Cassel might be the solution at QB.

Didn't know that, thanks.

I guess I am just underwhelmed with the Senior Bowl and over stressing it's lack of importance IMO. I see it as a double edged sword. It can help and hurt. It kind of neutralizes itself since there are more opportunities, in better environments no less, to show teams your abilities.

htismaqe 01-29-2013 09:30 AM

Rob Rang said if there's a QB in this draft you like, you have to take him at #1.

He said EVERY team is going to be looking to trade into the bottom of the 1st to pick up the leftovers.

He thinks the top 5 or 6 guys will ALL go in the 1st round.

"No way! Jonathan Ogden!" -- Matt Miller

Also not sure I buy Joe Thomas completely...

As for the rest of his comments... good thing Albert wants to stay in KC and probably doesn't even require using the franchise tag.

I think he's crazy on Manziel. For one thing, Jake Matthews will slide over to LT and be just as good as Joeckel. For another, Manziel doesn't need great line play to be effective - just someone who won't get rag-dolled. And, finally, aTm recruits at an extremely high level and has excellent line talent in its pipeline.

Well, he said he thought Joe Thomas was the best left tackle in football.

And then he followed it with "and how many playoff games has he won?"

Sounds to me like he "gets it".

Hopeful more radio personalitys will get the idea.
