Drinking a bottle of Boulevard [Smokestack Series] Collaboration No. 1 -- a historic collaboration between Boulevard and Jean-Marie Rock, the brewmaster of the Trappist monastery Orval.
I think that I'll review this beer: 750mL bottle served into a 2009 Boulevard Smokestack Series chalice Damn, this is pretty. I expect nothing less from a Smokestack Series beer; Boulevard brewmaster Steven Pauwels has mastered the art of perfect looking beer. Collaboration No. 1 is no different. It pours a very pale lemon shade of yellow. Though super-light in color -- light enough to see the carbonation bubbles rise in pretty pillars to the top of the glass -- there is just enough cloudiness to the body to lend the bear a hazy glow when held to direct light. The stark white head is two fingers or more at its peak with fairly sticky lacing. I don't know the exact detail of the old-world brewing methods that Pauwels and Rock used but these techniques sure delivered a gorgeous beer. The aroma strikes first with a very drying sort of band-aid phenolic thing before lending to the airy, doughy pilsner malt. As the beer warms and opens up there are frankly Orval-like Beligan pale ale aromas coming out. Lots of apple skin and lemongrass and bittering hops. Its yeasty for sure but there is a restraint holding things back. Its pretty fruity for a pils but plenty good smelling. The fruit phenols are imminently noticeable on the tongue. Apple skin and pear flesh and squeezed lemon brighten up the malt. The pilsner malt is clean and bready and a great backbone for the yeasty flavors and the leafy, astringent hops. Brewing spice -- clove, most likely -- swirls around all of the flavors as the beer warms. This is as much a Belgian Pale as it is an old-world Pils; whatever it is it is a clean, technical, well-executed brew. I typically prefer my pilsners to be very light in mouthfeel but there are some stronger, more yeast-centric flavors in this Imperial strength pils. Thankfully the body has been thickened to accommodate the increased flavor profile. While medium-bodied, Collaboration No. 1 doesn't sacrifice in carbonation level. The beer is at all times lively and prickly with jets of bubbles. This carbonation helps keep this refreshing, a key quality of a good pilsner. That sense of refreshment works with the flavors to make this a very drinkable beer, especially with food. This would be delightful with a grilled burger or a simple summer salad. When this beer was announced there was some trepidation at the fact that it would be an imperial pilsner. After all, this is a monumental event for craft beer! This beer marks the first time that an American craft brewery has collaborated with the brewmaster of one of the seven Trappist breweries worldwide! Shouldn't such a huge collaboration -- one between the Brettonamyces loving brewers of Saison-Brett and Orval -- be something more daring, more innovative? Imperial Pilsner sounds boring but this beer, I assure you, is not. Pauwles and Jean-Marie Rock used long-extinct brewing methods to craft a beer that Rock has wanted for years to give to the world. This refreshing, delicious pilsner is worth buying and enjoying not only because it is a limited release, not only because it is an important collaboration, but because it is a flat-out very good beer. Don't miss out. |

Had a bottle of ultra-delicious Russian River Pliny the Elder today. After hitting up Oklahoma Joe's for the Wed. night burnt ends I went to Flying Saucer for a glass of Bell's HopSlam on-tap and a glass of Bell's Expedition Stout on-tap. Yummy day!

Recently found out I'm allergic to gluten, so I'm having some Redbridge beer made from sorghum instead of wheat and barley. Surprisingly made by Anheuser Busch, and really very good to my beer snob tastes.
|
New Amsterdam Gin - it's not Saphire, but its damn tasty. Vote of confidence had been acquired by this product previously, but I'm surprised yet again at the quality for the dollar spent...
Then again, fresh lime makes a lot of gin taste decent, so...whatever. |
Vodka tonic, gonna try an uzzo ? Shot in a minute!

Victory Prima Pils (perhaps the best American example of a pilsner).

I've had three Bell's HopSlam tonight. That is quite enough, though I am considering a fourth.

I had an ice cold Sante Fe trail Root beer tonight, looked like a fancy beer but it was root beer, said it was microbrewed, it was diet and pretty good.

I am considering a 22oz. bomber of Alpine Nelson (rye IPA).

****ed up, ran out of every mixer. So, found some country time pink lemonade in the cupboard and mixed it with clear rum.
Not so bad. I would kick my own ass though if it were a clear glass.... pink drinks just aren't cool. |

tried the Sam Adams Noble Pils for the first time, really surprised me....has a pine flavor (yeah, sounds weird, but it cuts through the sweetness) along with a mild citrus flavor that is incredibly tasty and drinkable...haven't tasted anything quite like it, an instant favorite...

The Noble Pils is a damned good beer. Had it in the brewmasters sampler pack a couple weeks ago.
|
The Noble Pils is the best thing Sam Adams has put out since their all-Hallartau Imperial Pilsner from a couple of years ago. Noble Pils is in the top 5, maybe top 3, American pilsners I've ever had. Its also a great instructional beer for learning how different hops taste, since it features only European noble hops (saaz, hallartau, spalt, tetenang).

My second ever bottle of Sailor Jerrys Rum... ahoy, avast, aye-aye yoho! a plunderin we go1
The first bottle about 1 month ago, went down sooo smooth & i was sooo fooled... that i ended up sliding, 90% involuntarily, out of my chair & onto the floor for atleast an hour, til i could crawl nto bed, i thought i'd been hit with a horse tranqulizer, completely unexpected & unintended. Honestly, havent felt like that since maybe HS sophomore year... gather your thoughts & gird your loins with this stuff, i'm currently on guard against its effects, but that drunken bastard could crawl in under the wire at any time... |
I had some Boulevard Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale and some Sam Adams Noble Pils throughout the course of the night.
|
A couple of Sam Adams Noble Pils followed by a Bell's HopSlam. YES, I still have some HopSlam left. I bought a shit ton of it because its a once-per-year release. I am down to three bottles. Such sadness.
|
More Sam Adams Noble Pils. I'm sad that this is a seasonal release; it needs to be available year-round. Right up there with the classic Sierra Nevada Pale Ale for the best value amongst widely-available session beers.
|
I'm going to take one of my 2008 Schlafly Reserve Imperial Stouts from my cellar and drink it tonight.
