What about leather gloves?

Kid leather is fine for gloves but patent leather for shoes.

Do you have a problem with suede?

Always.

BS. This isn't 1978.

A nice pair of suede shoes strikes an even medium between "too casual" and "too formal."

Well... good taste and fashion are timeless for some and way before 1978 as a touchstone for gentlemen. For those not familiar with the social graces and interested in an illustration of such I would suggest watching Astaire, Crosby, Grant, etc. movies.

I think that you are correct. There is an exception to every rule and why not for Cary Grant? I stated a general proposition. Continuous wear of suede without proper care renders that type of footwear somewhat shabby. If it is kept up, as with all fashion accessories, it will look fine. Especially if one has the frame and posture and fashion sense to pull it off. Some people just "wear" clothes, any clothes, very well. You may be one of them.

They are definitely not everyday footwear.

Both pairs. I particularly like the Puma insignia on the back.
