Anybody here done much fly fishing using non fly fishing equipment, i.e., a spinning reel & rod ? It's well known that a lot of so called fly fishing is really done with nymphs and other lures to fish for trout sub-surface. As a matter of fact I understand in many areas most of the "fly fishing" is done sub surface ?

Our boat is stored near Bucksaw, so usually in that area if we are just down there for the day. If we're camping for the weekend we go to Long Shoal.

I've never done it, but I think this is what you're asking about...

Best $75 you ever spent, isnt it?

Even days that you dont catch anything are great... outdoors, getting some sun by or on the water, checking out the various wildlife, catchin a buzz. Fishing is never boring to me.

If tomorrow is as nice as today was here, think i'm gonna go spend $40-50 restocking the tackle box, get a license & get started.

Well worth it.

Looking through Bass Pro looking at lures. Ready to go again and as often as possible.

Only caught one bass in the 1 1/2 hours we were there but just chilling outside at the pond was well worth it.

Anybody have any favorite bass lures or websites I can buy lures at?

Bass Pro isn't that bad on prices. As I've said before, we only have a wal mart here.

You can never go wrong with a plastic worm, just throw it in & leave it alone for several minutes or slowly work in to you.

Swimbaits that replicate the swimming motion of a minnow are great too, same for diving rattler's. I really dont think there is a perfect lure, what works today may not work tomorrow & what the other guy tells you may not work for you. My old stepdad used to swear by spoons but i've hardly caught a damn thing on'em.

But if a had to choose, it'd be live bait, minnow, bluegill, whatever. Some dont think thats very sporting, but i dont care, i like to catch fish & nothing is better than the real thing.

I dont know about websites, but i'm sure your local wally-world has plenty of decent stuff that'll work.

Not really, one aisle mainly lures in the $5-6 range. It's kind of surprising, they use to carry a lot of lures. I haven't shopped for lures in 10 years though.

That is surprising, you'd think a small town wally-world would be well stocked.

I'd say go to the bass pro site & order atleast 1 of anything that looks cool... not very scientific, but it'll be exciting for you. Trying out new lures is cool, 'is this one the magic ticket?'.

Do a craigslist search for "Fishing" and you can usually find someone selling out for cheap. Ebay also has some fantastic deals on fishing lures. If you find some you like, check and see if the seller has a store - that way you can stock up and only pay for shipping once.

tooge 04-04-2011 11:49 AM

my kids and I caught some real nice bluegills in our pond on a little minnow "fly" in sort of a crawdad color. dont even cast it out, just use a long crappie pole I have that is 9 feet long, and dangle it out in the pond. I gutted, scaled, scored, breaded, and deep fried the 'gills. They were tremendous. Love watching the kids eat the fins and tails like potato chips

philfree 04-04-2011 12:10 PM

My favorite lures are an old Jitter Bug and an old Lucky 13.

If I tried that, it would take Bill Gates to pay the tab. They have way too many things that just scream, "That thing HAS to catch fish".

It seems like 90% of the time I end up going back to a jig of some sort, a crankbait, or a plastic of some type anyway. But it is fun trying out the newest "must-have"

Bill Lundberg 04-04-2011 01:31 PM

What ever you do don't start watching the "Bassmasters" I find myself having to have everything that Kevin Van Damn catches a fish on... And that dude catches a lot of fish.

I don't really understand your question, but if you want to use spinning equipment to throw small nymph-like creatures, you might want to google "trout magnets"

tooge 04-04-2011 03:39 PM

Or, just use a very small (1/64) weight pinched about a foot above the nymph, and a clear bubble float with a small floresent orange dot painted on it so it also acts as an indicator. You can't really throw dry's this way, but any subsurface fly, yes

lol....when I was 12 I lived in a condo community that had these HUGE ponds filled with Coy...My buddy thought it would fun to go out on a tube late at night and catch a couple of them....well we did...we gutted, scaled, dredged in flour, fried and fed them to my little brother. I got busted because the little asshole loved the fins....:banghead:

To this day my mother will bring up that story because the little bastard said "Mom...."those fins were nice and crispy"...

Good times...

Mepps and Rooster Tail spinners, I’ve been very few places that I couldn’t pull something out of the water with one of those.

Walleye's have been really nice size from Chamberlain to Fort Thompson on the Missouri River.

Lots of 20 plus inchers.

tooge 04-14-2011 10:22 AM

Headed up to smithville yesterday evening about 8PM. Lots of little crappie in the 8 inch range about 12 feet of water and about half way down. Only one legal fish, and I released it. They should start hittin the bank any day now

this is what a scored and fried bluegill looks like. I usually remove the head, but the more you score it, the crunchier it is. Good stuff. Tail and fins are like potato chips.

that picture doesn't do them justice. If you've ever eaten any fried fish or pressure cooked fish or canned fish, its the same princple. I didn't have a pic of one, so I just found one on google images and admit it doesn't look real apetizing. Another poster PM'd me to see how to cook them, and I wanted to show how to score them.

Midway Chief 04-21-2011 05:29 PM

Spoonbill snagging was great today. Started at 6:25 am and landed a 60+ pounder by 6:30. We limited out (8 total) at 9:40 am. Our 8 fish totaled 360 lbs.

I went to the in-laws this weekend and hit "the pond" for about an hour Saturday morning right after a thunderstorm. I've never caught so many big bass in such a short time, ever. It was unreal. When it was all said and done I caught (3) 5 lber's a 7 lber, and a 7.5 lber.

Good job, BL!

Took the wife down to Bennett Springs, Friday, and got back yesterday. Took 3 Sat and 4 Sun morn in 30 mins after each morning siren. The wife took 3 on Sat and 3 on Sun, after I got back each day, and we'd had breakfast. Long, long, time since we'd done that, all these years, now that the kids are, for the most part, out of the nest.

NOBODY was on Whistle Bridge yesterday! First time I'd seen that in AGES!

ZootedGranny 05-02-2011 10:20 PM

Great pics, BL.

Went to Truman last Friday, and immediately had to throw out the map work I had done the prior night because two tournaments were being held. Where I normally see one or two people in a cove, there were 8 or 9.

Broke the maps back out, put together a new plan, and my old man and I proceeded to catch about 20 in two hours, including a 5 pound catfish on a plastic worm.

Then the winds started howling, the lake started whitecapping and everyone hit the coves, so we hit the road.

loochy 05-10-2011 08:57 AM

Saturday morning I fished the Current River, starting just below the end of Montauk Trout Park at 6:30 a.m. and finishing a little below Tan Vat at 5:30 p.m. (with a 2 hour break for lunch and a nap :have-a-nice-day: ). I nabbed about 30 fish. All were Rainbows except for one tiny little 9 inch brown. I landed 2 rainbows that went about 16 inches and the rest were standard 10-13 inchers. Fishing was great in the morning in the rain but slowed as the day went on. I had a TON of short strikes that I just chalked up to me being a crappy fisherman, but I talked to another fly fisher at Tan Vat and he mentioned the short strikes as well. Guys on the forums are talking about the short strikes too, so I guess I'm not as bad as I thought. Fishing in the morning during the rain was excellent and I had a hit on almost every other cast/drift.

All day I used a #10 olive mohair leech with some shot to get it down in the current. I used a dead drift followed by short twitches as the current swung it out.

Extra Point 05-11-2011 08:01 PM

No limit at Bennett, next week! May 19th being the end of the world, as we know it, makes for an ideal Gary Larson-Norman Rockwell melding. Happy Rapture, and catch some fish!

I'd noticed all the college and high school girls around were wearing grizzly saddle hackles (used for dry flies) in their hair lately (evidently inspired by Steven Tyler). Last night, I talked to my buddy who owns our local fly shop. Evidently he's completely sold out of grizzly saddles. On top of that, he can't get anymore in because of this national fashion craze. He said he's not on a first name basis with half the stylists in town.

I'm all for fashion... but once it starts screwing with my fishing :cuss:

I think I'm going to start heading to local clubs with a pair of shears and quietly snipping the hackle out of girls' hair.

Here's what I love. All of those oddball colors that were rarely useful in the flytying arena are now "all world" in the hair extension arena.

Business savvy is like my middle name, eh? Maybe I just happen to foresee this little shift about 2 decades ago. I hope they've aged well.

Groves, before you sell any fly fishing stuff run it by me first. My uncle is bigtime into it,as is my boss, and the book keepers husband.
Word.

Flyfishing is the only kind of fishing I've done since I was about 10. Started tying soon after that. Somewhere I still have that ol needlenose vise grips that was my first vise.

I didn't have a storefront, but tying for others sure helped out in college.

I'm not getting out of it, I just think that my 20 year old hackles may not fare too well if I get back into it. They might be better off adorning someone's lettuce and making me a cupla hundy instead.

I'll run it by you, no prob.

You've described that pile perfectly. Heck, if they do get that money, it might be worth stripping the hackles off the skin and making a pile. That pile looks bigger than it is.

How many flyshops wished they had just saved the sweepings from their bench over the years.

It's not like they have any bids, though.

MOhillbilly 05-13-2011 09:46 AM

Groves, let me know when you wanna do some small mouth/goggle eye fishing. I know a spot.

NewChief 05-13-2011 09:57 AM

I've only got one little pack of whiting saddle. I don't really need it because I fish with dries so rarely in Arkansas that I never tie them. As such, I suck at tying them and would just as soon just buy them on the rare occasion I actually need dry flies.

I'm all for fashion... but once it starts screwing with my fishing :cuss:

I think I'm going to start heading to local clubs with a pair of shears and quietly snipping the hackle out of girls' hair.

Those BITCHES!!!:cuss:

Sold a few on ebay today. Good way to make some unexpected coin.

Don't worry, MO, your flytying compadres would never want to pay what I got for these old hackles. Even if they were new they'd tell me to go fly a kite or mop a floor.

If I sell stuff at normal prices I'll let you know.

Caught a 6 lb 6.5 ounce largemouth the other night. pretty damn stoked. never caught one that big before. actually, i've never really heard of too many, if any that have been caught that big around here. The state record is only 9 lb's 3 ounces or so. Nothing like those big suckers way down south.

caught him the 24th on a shallow diving floating rapala. Good fight!

working on some pictures. hopefully have them up soon.

my older brother reeks of jealousy.

One size bigger than this lure with 3 hooks.

As a matter of fact I understand in many areas most of the "fly fishing" is done sub surface ?

You can use a casting bubble, but that method lacks delicacy for clear and calm waters and you can't mend your line so you'll get a crap drift and put off the fish.

kstater 06-11-2011 04:09 PM

I swear up and down I caught a cross between a trout and a smallmouth today. The pic doesn't do justice as to how much this looked and felt like a trout and how small the dorsal fin was.

Went camping at Horsethief Reservoir this weekend. It's a new lake north of Dodge City along the Buckner Creek that opened up last year. The fishing is already great.

http://youtu.be/JyS95uftKEU Video about the lake won't embed :#

Caught a couple nice sized bass this morning.

Yeah, nice size out of a new lake, how long ago did they first stock it?

Been trying to get serious about my fishing the last few weeks, but it never fails that when i have the time either a cold fronts blowing in or its raining like hell. For every nice day this spring & early summer we've had three days of dogshit.

Wyatt Earp 06-19-2011 11:11 AM

They first stocked it in 2009. They stocked a bunch of fingerling walleye as well and we've started catching some this summer that are about 14" long. Another year and they'll be perfect.

Caught this nice Largemouth on Wednesday on the Elk river, 18.5 inches and around 3lbs. The mess of Bluegill, Black Perch, and that lone Goggle Eye made for a nice bag of fillets.

Red Beans 06-26-2011 07:44 AM

Headed to the river Tuesday night. Got the bachelor party fishing float on Wednesday and hopefully a kick ass fish fry that night. Getting married on Saturday and then off to Costa Rica on the 4th. Should have some nice fishing picks (among many others) from both those outings.

It's that time of the year. Some pals and I are heading up for our annual fly-in fishing trip. Last year we reeled around 30 each over the weekend. Mostly 2-3 pound bass. We're trying a different lake this year which I've heard has more variety. I'll fire off some pic's of the trophy's when I get back.

Alright fisherman. It's coming up. Fishing time.

Any experienced Northern Pike fisherman on CP? We have a great bass/northern/bluegill/crappie/perch lake that doesn't get fished very hard for pike. I know there are pike in there at or around 20 lbs. The game warden is a good friend, and they electroshocked it. They found some HUGE northern, as well as several state record largemouths (they haven't told anyone but me and my brother and we're keeping that shit tight lipped). I've been getting pretty good at catching the bigger bass, but i want to get into the pike as well.

I catch a shitload of smaller pike, usually 3-6 pounders, but generally not much over that. They seem to like my bass lures, often destroying them if i am using a spinnerbait.

My question is, if i want to target these pike over 10 pounds, what do you experts of the northern pike fishing world recommend.

Any tips/lures/strategies/rod setups? What say you?
