There is no Willett Rye that's not cask strength as far as I know. I saw a stack of it at Lukas just last weekend. Maybe $56.99?

hmmm what Lukas I was at the one on Flintlock up north and didn't see that. Not saying its not true but don't really venture out of the general area I live anymore. But willing for a good price.

Gotta live small out here in SD, but here's an idea. No easy way to photo all the stacked bottles or in the wine slots (mostly wine), so this is the best I've got for now. My beer cellar is in a closet, so not seen here.

I had a couple YOLO pours last weekend... found Pappy 12yr after seeing it on a few other menus and striking out. It's one of those "to the style" drinks that's outstanding and worth the pour for an incredibly smooth drink.

And then one I didn't know existed, Jefferson's Marian McLain... and it was ****ing outstanding. It's one you don't want to try because you're afraid of falling in love with it and will splurge for a bottle.

The Lukas up north is terrible. OP and Martin City are both better, cleaner stores.

I was out at Lukas in Martin City yesterday and they had stacks of 4 year old Willett rye for $54.99.

Yeah Lukas online shows up in several locations. May get out later to pick up some. If not if they still have it later next week.

Nice score! Did you pay MSRP, or a marked up price? I'd like to pick up another bottle or two, but the liquor store markups are crazy.

My wife had the night off so just got home from Price Chopper as she needed some things for Dad's Day dinner. I milled around in the liquor department. Low and behold the fabled WT Rare Breed cask strength was on the shelf 2 bottles. I grabbed one then I saw Old Overholt rye BIB and another new one Ezra Brook's 99 both on sale both at 20 bucks each. The Wife said one bottle so RB it was.

So when got home I cracked it open and poured one neat. My first impression was smooth super sweet thick and oily with a late bite kick. The finish was ok but not lasting. Not disappointing but for the price have had much better. This is just a first impression good but I expected more.

BigOlChiefsfan 06-15-2023 09:42 PM

Bingo. Not bad, I like Rare Breed but not worth the usual price these days. Go back for the Ezra 99 on sale, it's worth the extra trip.

O.city 06-16-2023 06:26 AM

I've got some Old Forrester King Ranch that I've been sipping on that's real nice.

Got a bottle of Weller single Barrel that I'm waiting for just the right time to open.

Anyone mess with any of the Ezra Distillers Collection bottles?

Grabbed one on sale this afternoon along with a Del Bac Dorado

Raiderhater 06-16-2023 06:59 PM

Sippin’ on a little Yellowstone Select Kentucky Straight tonight. I feel taken advantage of though. It is not uncommon to see this sell for around $60, but don’t buy it at that price because it can be had in the $40 range or even slightly less if you poke around the various liquor stores. And $40 is what I paid today. But at the next stop as I was looking for a rum I still hadn’t found I saw Yellowstone for $25. I visibly recoiled when I saw it, feeling a little sick over having already bought my bottle. I’ve never seen it at that price before. I know where I’ll be going next time I want more of it though.

I picked up a bottle of Chicken Cock Kentucky Straight yesterday. With a name like that how could I resist, right? I am enjoying it quite a bit though. We’ll see how it holds up through the end of the bottle, but I could see this having a permanent place in the liquor cabinet.

I’ve lost the ability to post pics taken by phone so here‘a a link to their website instead (I really want to try that Island Rooster rye, but not at a $200 price tag) -

Buffalo Trace used to be my regular go to. Now it’s hard to find and expensive when you can. I’ve switched to Elijah Craig. I can get it for $25 a bottle

I’ve been quite pleased so far. A review I read when trying to decide on purchasing it liked it but, thought it was a bit over priced in comparing it to other traditional style bourbons. I don’t mind paying $60 for a bourbon that has a rather distinct flavor that suites my palate, and this is just that.

I bought a bottle last summer as a bit of a joke based on the name, but it was legitimately good. Killed the bottle out by the pool with a handful of friends. It is a touch pricey for what it is, so I'm not sure if I'd get it again barring a sale.

Well they send it to the store bottled, but personalized in the label. The send the store samples from different barrels, you pick one, then they bottle it and send it to you.

You used to be able to pay for a custom tasting at some of the distilleries and could get an actual barrel with your own customized blend or even a single barrel (no blend). They would even allow you to customize that stamp burned into the lid.

I know Jack Daniels did this and I think a few others.

That, I think, is how this worked. In this case they bought one of the six samples that were sent, but no blending. It's quite potent too... As for the branded barrel, I don't think that happened. But they sent three samples in one box, and three more in another after he passed on the first three, and the boxes are a keeper too. And they even sent a bottle of their spring water to clear the palate between tastings.

It's not cheap, but it sure sounds like a fun thing to do if you're in the business.

This seems to be a thing more recently; at least locally to me.

Friend of mine owns a liquor store in town, he bought a barrel of Makers. My golf club bought their own barrel. They all went for a tasting, picked their blend, had it bottled and sent to them. I've got one from each.

Staves are the pieces of board that are used to make the barrels. The listing you see on the bottles are the staves used in to make the barrel to create the desired flavor profile. The number next to the stave is the char level.

1 is a 15 second char
2 is 30 seconds
3 is 35 seconds

1 is a 15 second char
2 is 30 seconds

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

Could've been my timing on a Sunay afternoon but I was the only person at the bar and ol boy kept feeding me barrel pick after barrel pick before I was like bro I have to drive back to Globe

Seriously though grabbed a pour of Del Bac single barrel plus their Yellowstone pick to-go. This place is super friendly and legit.

Hopefully they stick around.

I'm far pickier about beer, so I usually know what I'm getting into and rarely disappointed with a purchase... and a 22oz bottle of course goes far quicker.... compared to bourbon, where there's just a ton out there (and so much of it sounds great on the surface), and collecting it like beer would make for a lifetime supply 10 times over., so I rely much more on goof bourbon bars to try stuff or try before I buy.
