I can get you some eagle rare, just got a case of it last week from my bourbon "guy".

He's got a couple sets of Blantons if any interest, but for the 8 it would cost you about 1200 bucks. Don't think I have any extras of the Weller, I'll check in the basement.

I have 2 Blantons single barrels. So I am only interested in the gold or SFTB.
Definitely interested in some Eagle Rare. How much?

I would like to try a sip of WhistlePig. I am not a big fan of Rye, so I am not sure if I would like it.

The Boss Hog is their flagship product only made once a year. It's stupid expensive and almost impossible to get. My sister is a bourbon collector and she has all the releases. She opened them all the last time I came out. The one you are looking at there is considered the best bottle they ever made. She sold it to me at retail price. It is beyond smooth with hint of cinnamon and a bit of a green apple finish.

This is her collection

Local store had some of that brand, but it was lighter. I wasn't a big fan, but maybe that's better. Or maybe I'm a schlub.

Picked up a bottle of Blade and Bow this evening and am instantly a fan. This is really good stuff. My dad, brother and BiL are all in agreement. It’s a smooth sipping bourbon.

I talked myself out of that one while looking at flight options earlier today (and then the restaurant didn't have several selections anyway LMAO), but will have to try it at some point.

Tried a Maker's Mark cask strength that was the tastiest of the three.

Had some Jack Daniels Coy Hill (141.7 proof) this evening - amazing.

BigOlChiefsfan 04-30-2023 09:40 PM

I was in the right spot/right time with some unallocated money after I quit smoking about 25 years ago +/-. Quit smoking about the time that Pappy Van Winkle passed away and his son or grandson released a whole bunch of really old bourbon the old man had set aside to 'mellow'. I had money that didn't have to pay bills briefly and got some 12 year old and some 18 year old Pappy, and I keep it hidden away to celebrate with. It's just a 'high wheat' recipe bourbon, smooth, that's been aged in oak a long, long time. It's smoother than my ex-wifes backside - that's saying something. When the Chiefs win the superbowl, out comes that bottle of 18 year old Pappy for a shot or 2. But it don't come out for just winning over the Oakland faders, it's superbowl whiskey. If we beat the fade, out comes the 'Ten High'. Oh, we'll drink it. But the fade don't deserve the really good whusk.

Been on a rye kick lately, specifically ones very heavy on the rye. A few recent favorites:
- High West Double Rye
- Pikesville
- Willett 4yr

Anyone have recommendations on high rye whiskeys?

Angel's Envy Rye... smells like maple syrup to me, it's amazing.
Sagamore Rye (pretty sure I bought it at Raised By Wolves in SD)
Oak & Eden
And my favorite all time is Distillery 291 'M' (but it's $110)

"high rye whiskeys" can mean different things...
Do you mean high rye bourbons, or high rye ryes?
You mention Pikesville (which is one of my all time favorite whiskys) - however it is "only" 51% rye.

Anyway I digress - I like the following ryes regardless of the rye content...
Wild Turkey 101 Rye
Russel's Reserve Rye
Knob Creek Rye
James E Pepper 1776 Rye

And some "high" rye bourbons:
Old Grand Dad (27%)
4 Roses Single Barrel (35%)

For something new and different (if you can find it)
Powers Irish Rye Whiskey

Also, here's a link that might be helpful -

+1 Knob Creek Rye, dangerously tasty
Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye was the first higher proof bourbon/rye that I really enjoy

I've had the first two, and you're right on the Angel's Envy, reminded me of pancakes. Pretty wild, and fun to share with people for the first time. The Sagamore was more my style, want to try some of their varieties.

I'll check out the other two, thanks!

Fair point, I'm not really down with the lingo, apparently. Basically, I'm looking for very rye-forward whiskeys, which I assume will all be rye whiskeys. I like the spiciness and bite on the tongue.

If by heirloom you mean some of the old bloody butcher varieties, yes. Most overly rely on their farm to bottle marketing scheme stories though.

A buddy tried something from a company called Jeptha Creed and said it was decent and taste tested something they have coming in the future that he said was even better.

I found some Very Old Barton (henceforth VOB) 86 proof today. They release VOB 86, 90 and BIB/100 and maybe some others, these I've seen. It's a 'bottom shelf' bourbon these days after changing hands several times - but it's a pretty good buy. Used to be 6 years old when I started drinking it, usually 'only' 4 years old these days but I can vouch for that 86 proof @ 4 years being well worth the asking price. I seldom see it here in the Kansas 'burbs and won't tell you where I'm buying it (I want more, to heck with you guys) but I will recommend you start watching for it. The 86 is 'what I'm used to' - my daily pour is another 86 and this stuff 'tastes right'. But I used to drink more 90 and 100 proof whiskey, if you see any VOB 90 or 100 I'll recommend 'em both as being well worth their (low) asking price. VOB = VGB (very good buy).

Alright I'll point you at it, it's out in Lenexa at the Gomer's on 87th, a few blocks west of 435. I made a fuss over it when I was checking out, I want 'em to keep it in stock. You make a fuss, too. They have lots of nice $60 bourbon. I want more nice $14 bourbon.

Me when I see that BigOl has posted in the bourbon thread

https://i.imgur.com/ZYBrfqN.jpg

BigOlChiefsfan 05-05-2023 07:25 PM

For that - I'll tell you some more bourbon stories. The original post in this thread was about Buffalo Trace. It's a nice name for some whiskey that I used to drink under a different label. It's a 'wheater' - they use plenty of corn to make it, but 'smooth it out' with a lot of wheat in the mash. I used to drink a lot more wheaters than I do these days, Let me point you at the Buffalo Trace folks big family of whiskey - including some Canadian stuff.
https://www.whiskeyuniv.com/buffalo-trace-tasting
Those Wellers & W.L. Wellers are dandy 'wheater' bourbons, but they want a lot more money for 'em these days than the good old days (when I was the only guy buying 'em). The Old Charter line is another old fave - their 90 proof is a fave, good buy for the money. Another 'good buy' on the page is the Benchmark stuff. It's not as good as some of their $89/750 whiskey but it won't cost all that much. I recommend the 'black label' version. Eagle Rare is nice - but too pricey for me. It's a nice one to ask for when someone else is buying a shot. Ancient Age is another lower priced drink in their line. If you like 'smooth' their 10 year old is a smooth, semi affordable drink. If you find one with a 10 year label - try and buy it. If it's just an Ancient Age 10 label...well, here... read this.

Some more good reviews at that site. Pour a small dram and read a bit and keep amused until football season rolls around again. We deserve it.

About a year later, I took it out and gave it another try. Compared to other bourbons in the $40 range it was a little below average, not particularly complex. From Willett, the Old Bardstown 10 year 101 is a better bourbon at a better price.

The price is not bad, the bourbon is OK for the price point, and the bottle is eye catching. I think they use the bottle so stores have to put it up on the top shelf. That is not where the contents belong. Now that I have the bottle, I would not buy again.

Having said that...for some reason I broke out the Pot Still during the half-time show and drank it exclusively during the second half of Super Bowl LVII...so it will always have a place of honor in my cabinet.

I took the wife shopping at the Asian markets so she could restock. That meant that I got to hit a few liquor stores. Didn't have time to check out Lenexa Gomers but hit the Gomers near Liberty.

Picked up these

Wellers Antique 107- one of my personal favs
Old Forester Statesman- another personal fav
Remus Repeal Reserve- never had so we will see but reviews were good

The last stop Hyvee

Russel Reserve 10-one lone bottle on the shelf so couldn't resist as its another I like at a fair price.

Actually I find it fairly often around here. The catch is finding at a price I am willing to pay. It has been sky high for awhile approaching 80 bucks. I found it for under sixty which as a a medium teir bourbon is still to me high but I had money burning a hole so. Sadly I remember it when it was 30 or so bucks slightly above Buff trace.

My wife broke this one out.

So a funny little story here. My brother, Jeff, passed the end of August. After the funeral I went out to Pirtle winery in Weston w/ my mom and stepdad and my aunt and her husband. We did the wine tasting thing and my mom and stepdad proceeded to buy about 300 dollars worth of wine, like 15 bottles there to take home and drink in the bar area. Ended up getting pretty wine drunk, got my aunt stoned outta her mind after she told me she'd toked at a DMB or some shit concert a couple weeks before. Then she ****ing puked her guts up all over the parking lot and had to be carried back to the truck.

My wife said she was waaaay less dunk than me and insisited she drive us home. On the way home she said she didn't want to go home and wanted to party tonight. This is not something my wife ever says. I was a passenger as she aggressively drove us to my buddy's place to drink and get ****ed up. She ate a gummy and smoked a few bowls and passed out around 10. My buddy and I partied until like 2 in the morning while she was out. The next morning she was still a little ****ed up and wanted to get a seed planted. We had discussed how we were done trying like a month before, she sold off all my son's clothes and boy toys on marketplace like a week before.

I obliged and now we are toasting with the very same wine we got that day. Found out she was pregnant like three weeks later and never drank it. Unintentionally done truly but an awesome story I had to share!

Oh and that bourbon is delicious. Sweeter than I'd typically like by a good bit; however it's so goddamn easy to drink and has that little kick you want when drinkin whusk.

It's one I'll buy in rotation for myself and not be worried to offer to most company. My best friend is coming down in a bit with his girls and I've got him a neat one ready to toast.

And he definitely doesn't drink bourbon like this but it's so smooth and tasty he'll be fine

Gomer's of Kansas had my 'daily pour' (Evan Williams black label) for $5/1.75 less than my usual shop, I was in the neighborhood anyway so I grabbed a couple and put $10 worth of gasoline in the car to bring back the balance of nature.

"Here's to us, who's like us? Damn few and they're all dead!"

Old Grandad BIB was my pops hunting camp bourbon with his TWA buds around the campfire. There is a special place in my heart for that bourbon.

Best finish for the price point of any bourbon out there. But be forewarned they will ghost you it disappears and can be hard to find. I do think its not more popular because the hints of anise but I love black licorice and it gives off hints of it.

They opened up a Bubbles off 45 and 435 a few months ago. Less traffic, same selection as the store on North Oak.

About five mins from me so it's my new liquor store.

Came across this at Costco the other day, which is one of my favorite sippers. Normally ~$80 around here, so stocked up a bit. I need a bigger bar...

Crazy price differences from here in KC. That 4 year Willett rye will run you maybe $60 and it seems like there are piles of it everywhere.
