Just got moved out to Charleston. This is my fault. They’ve lost every game since I got in the car.

In the old format this (obviously) would have killed any chance at the playoffs. But we aren’t in the old format, so they’re just going to have to keep plugging away the leaks with whatever corks they can find. Stop this streak and put together a .500 stretch to bring home a WC spot.

10 days ago we were all talking about how Cleveland was circling the drain. Now, they’re kinda on the right track with some breathing room.

It can happen.

Where KC is getting a little fortunate is that Boston HAS reinforcements that could help them a lot and for some reason isn't using them.

Anthony and Campbell could come up and provide them a pretty big boost almost immediately. Both guys are locked in in AAA right now and can likely carry that hot streak through September.

They're not guys that are likely to give you 150 games of premier play at the moment (20 and 22 respectively) but both guys can come up in the middle of a hot streak and play damn good baseball.

But Boston's keeping them buried. They're making a mistake. The Royals don't really have ready reinforcements to use but it's not hurting them because their direct competition in Boston HAS those reinforcements but isn't using them.

Yeah, I don't think there is anyway they continue to play this bad. Sometimes baseball happens and we're just having a bad stretch at one of the worst times. Hopefully having this happen now will keep it from happening in the playoffs.

dlphg9 09-04-2024 10:06 AM

So I'm not sure about tie breakers and everything, but it'll be hard for the Tigers or Red Sox to end with more wins then us.

Here's some possible finishes and what those two teams would need to do to surpass our win totals over our final 22 games(Sox and Tigers have 23 left).

(Royals 13-9)(Sox/Tigers 19-4)
(Royals 12-10)(Sox/Tigers 18-5)
(Royals 11-11)(Sox/Tigers 17-6)
(Royals 10-12)(Sox/Tigers 16-7)
(Royals 9-13)(Sox/Tigers 15-8)
(Royals 8-14)(Sox/Tigers 14-9)
(Royals 7-15)(Sox/Tigers 13-10)

Hell I don't see either one of those teams going 13-10 over their final 23 games, but I can see KC getting anywhere from 9-12 more wins.

For those of us outside of Kansas City, tonight's game is broadcast on FS1.

GabyKeepsMeWarm 09-04-2024 11:55 PM

What a season it’s been…. Lose 7 in a row with 4 weeks left, you’d likely be screwed. Nope. Still firmly there for a wild card spot.

Haven’t had much luck at all the whole season, and it’s really been a pretty shit 2+ weeks for bad luck with Renfroe, Lorenzen and especially Vinnie going down. Schedule did us no favors either all year.

Yet, here we still are. 21 games left, and nobody seems to want the last wild card. **** it if we get it while limping to the finish line, that’s a helluva lot more than 99% of the world would have imagined back in April.

Just the beginning gang…

I think Hunter Harvey is a lemon.

RHP*Hunter Harvey*(mid-back tightness)
Expected return:*September
Harvey has been on the 15-day IL since Aug. 10, retroactive to Aug. 7, after he felt something pull in his back during his normal pregame routine earlier that week. He suffered a setback in his rehab program on Aug. 20 when he had to receive a cortisone injection because his back wasn't loosening up as much as he or the Royals would have liked to see at that point.

Harvey threw a bullpen on Sept. 1 and "did not bounce back well" from it the next day, manager Matt Quatraro said, with symptoms returning following the bullpen. Harvey did not throw on Sept. 3 or 4. It's become a day-to-day situation as he and the Royals see how he feels and determine what the next steps will be.*(Last updated: Sept. 4)

I don't think the Royals have a package that can really get him. At least not one that doesn't make the team a lot worse next year.

He's a consensus top 50 prospect. What is KC sending Boston that they need and want?

A year of Brady Singer isn't going to do it. You'd probably have to offer Cole Ragans. That's about the only thing I could see enticing them to move Anthony, and even then I'm not sure it is enough.

I was actually thinking Lugo could be the headliner. Beyond that, I have no idea what it would take. I just think there is a lot of extra value in his contract that the royals should cash in on and take a similar swing next year.

Getting a left handed guy who gets on base a lot ahead of BWJ was my whole premise. Seems like the most straightforward path to producing runs to me.

Do the Royals try to trade singer this off season or listen? I would've definitely thought so prior to thos season.

Lugo has some trade value, sure, but not anywhere close to enough to swing a top 50 consensus prospect like Anthony.

I think it's hard to find a deal that's enough of an overpay to take that risk. Singer has two excellent pitches and has been held back by refusal/inability to develop a reliable third pitch to help against opposite-handed hitters.

Trading a guy like that is always tough. Getting enough that you don't feel stupid for moving on if he finally unlocks that next level you could not is a tough task... and the type of thing that puts GMs on hot seats.

poolboy 09-05-2024 03:23 PM

Lugo or Ragans starting the wild card?

TomBarndtsTwin 09-05-2024 03:28 PM

They all pitched in Houston last week and Lugo looked, by far, the best against them.

Singer was solid. Ragans was good till he ran out of gas in the 6th.

I honestly would be comfortable with any of those 3 starting in Houston.

Probably will just depend on how the Royals set their rotation the last week.

If offense shows up, I have confidence we can win that series.

In case it wasn't obvious, I'm expecting the Royals to snag the last Wild Card, which puts them on a collision course with Houston in the Wildcard at their place for 3 games. Well, hopefully 3 games. Our SP was good there last week. Our bullpen sucked and our offense didn't produce. They'll have to be better next time around for us to win that series.

I'd go with Lugo, but also I would limit his innings big time in his last few starts. He's already at 186 IP, which is already 40 more than hes ever thrown.

Also the WC round is now a 3 game series.

If the Royals make it to the WC round, they will both pitch (as pointed out earlier, it’s a series now). But if you could only start one of them, it would be Lugo and it’s not close. Ragans has not been good vs the Astros this year. He has 2 starts against them and has pretty meh numbers:

10 innings pitched
14 hits
8 earned runs allowed.

All of this has been true thus far. Gotta give JJ credit. He didn't sit on his hands when things were going poorly.

I forgot sample size doesn't matter when it's something you like.

Also we will never know, because they didn't get a chance. It's a good thing we released Brent Rooker because some shit bird needed playing time.

WhawhaWhat 09-07-2024 02:42 PM

Rooker was also in KC at the same time as Dayton and Matheny so it's possible he just didn't pray enough.

It's pretty much a given that the Royals will get a WC spot. The Royals would have to go on a bad losing stretch and the Red Sox and Tigers would have to go on a crazy winning stretch. All the Royals have to do is win 8 of their last 19 games and they win the 3rd wild card spot for sure. There is even a legit shot of the getting it with just 5 wins in their last 19.

tk13 09-08-2024 01:30 AM

The other part of it is a lot of these AL contenders play each other. Minnesota's schedule isn't brutal but the last two weeks is tough, Cleveland, Boston & Baltimore.

Detroit and Baltimore still have to play against their entire season series. So if Detroit really gets that hot, it probably means Baltimore is taking on losses.

After this Yankees series coming up, the Royals finish their brutal stretch and then almost the entire rest of the season is interleague games against the NL, except the Tigers series. Kind of weird really when you look at it.

VAGOMO 4 LIFE! 09-08-2024 01:35 AM

Royals only 4 games back of best record in the AL

Would be nice to get him back. He has been really ****ing good for the Royals.

24.1 IP - 1.85 ERA - 1.16 WHIP

He's only had one "bad" game, but that still wasn't that bad.

4 1/3 IP - 6 Hits - 3 ER - 2 Walks - 3 Ks - 2 HRs

That's the only game he's given up more than 1 ER and the only game in which he's given up a HR for us. He's been way better than I ever expected.

If he had a better fast ball, then he'd be much more exciting. It's hard enough to hit on pitching prospects, but guys with 88-91 fastball velocity rarely excel at the major league level.

TomBarndtsTwin 09-08-2024 03:35 PM

Only 18 games left to go for the regular season.

2.5 games up on the Twins for the 5th Wildcard.

6 games up on Seattle for a playoff spot.

It’s lookin good, fellas! Need to NOT get swept in NY. At least get one, two would be great!

I really don’t think we have to worry much about not making the playoffs at this point, it’s just a matter of what spot we end up with.

Look at it this way, if 88 wins is the magic number, then Boston and Seattle would have to go 16-3 and 15-3 respectively. That’s just not happening. If 86 wins is the magic number, then it’s 14-5 and 13-5 respectively. More plausible, but still not very realistic.

I’d love to see us finally get lucky and go on our own hot streak and upend Cleveland for the division. Getting a week off could do wonders for this team. I think that might actually be more realistic than either Boston or Seattle sneaking in unless Minnesota collapses, which they could, as they’ve been prone to some streaky play all year.

GabyKeepsMeWarm 09-08-2024 05:43 PM

I guess I need to throw Detroit in the mix. After their win today, they’re tied with Seattle at 73-71.

That bullpen had a great a great 3 game series.

9 innings
2 hits
11k's

That's a great contribution.

You are correct. If his mechanics and secondary pitches are very sound, that can offset some of that. Rich Hill comes into mind.

Bobby Witt Jr and Vinnie were on Rick Eisen show a couple days ago. Vinnie just oozes with charisma, not that Bobby doesn't but Vinnie has got to be a clubhouse guy.

Twins have the 3rd and final spot
