The other thing that I remember well about his defense was he often took incorrect routes to cover fly balls. He could make a mistake and still track it down. And he ran down balls in the gaps not so much by drifting into the gap but by speeding to the ball at a 90° angle to the ball, then diving. And he did that dozens of times.
