Yea, there is starting to be a divide between new Trek fans and old Trek fans.
I like them both, but can see where some fans might get pissed. But remember, alot of ToS episodes had Kirk/Spock/McCoy fighting guys hand to hand. It wouldnt surprise me if some of the fighting was inspired by the Wild Wild West stuff which was on during the same time period.
They were limited with phasers shots by budget obviously.
The fist fighting was toned down when Picard came along because Stewart was a more respected actor and less physical than Shatner.
