Fun fact, I dated one of the Granddaughters of one of the Sullivan Brothers.

Hopefully they can save this museum ship.

Correct.

My wife and I attended the Commissioning of "The Sullivan's DDG 68" in 1997. A friend of ours was the CO. There was a granddaughter of one of the Sullivan's who was the sponsor. IIRC her name was Kelly

That's it, and she still is very active in preserving the legacy of the Sullivan family.

I bet some Japanese midget sub is trying to escape out the St. Lawrence Seaway as we speak. I hope we're patrolling the area heavily.

Update: Progress is slow.

BUFFALO, New York (KWWL) – Wednesday brought some much-needed nice weather to Buffalo as crews continue their efforts to refloat the USS The Sullivans.

Tuesday brought much of the work at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park to a grinding halt. Wintry weather moved through the region and delayed some of the plans.

Specialized dive teams were able to get inside the hull of the ship Wednesday morning and afternoon to get an up close and detailed look at what exactly caused the ship to sink to the bottom of the canal where it's moored.

The good news is that the ship is resting on the bottom of the canal. It can't sink down any farther. However, the changing water levels in the canal and Lake Erie makes things a challenge for the crews working to save the ship.

“We're very thankful the weather has turned. It's day seven of this operation. The first six days have been very up and down when it comes to both water levels and wind stresses that have made the diving operations very difficult,” said Paul Marzello Sr., President and CEO of the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park.

. . .

“What they're looking for is the condition of the hull. Where is the water coming in from? Can we repair it? [!] If we can repair it, then we can right the ship and get it to a place where it's in a stable situation. So those are some of the things we're looking for,” said Captain Lexia Littlejohn, Sector Commander for the U.S. Coast Guard.

. . .

Thursday, if the weather cooperates, Capt. Littlejohn said they hope to get the dive team back in the water to finish up their assessment. Dozens of people are working on this project. The extra data from the diving assessment will help create a computer model to give crews a better idea of how to repair and right the ship.

The USS The Sullivans and the Sullivan brothers hold a special place in the hearts of the people of Buffalo. The people working on the ship are operating under the mantra of “failure is not an option.”

. . .

An update from Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown is expected Thursday.

I traveled to Buffalo this summer and saw the naval park. The USS Sullivans was (and still, I believe, is) closed off, but going on the other vessels is a cool experience. The adjacent museum is limited but worthy of checking out. It would have been nice if the museum had something about the Sullivan Brothers.

There are two Sullivan Brothers ships, the one in Buffalo, and then one that is still active. The boys’ mother sponsored the first one, and the granddaughter of one of the boys is the sponsor of the active one. It is naval tradition that only a female sponsor a ship.

I believe there is some talk of dry-docking the ship for the permanent future. I think everyone is on edge about seeing how this winter goes.

I'll bet it sank in 13 seconds.

Money to spend on Ukraine but not on our own history.

Under rated comment.

I guess the Bills aren't the only sinking ship in Buffalo.

the sullivans brothers are the reason that brothers don't serve with each other in case one died the other one can go home.

My understanding is that the military had that rule before the Sullivans, but they requested an exception. Obviously, it was granted, and somewhere out there is an interview where the guy who granted the exception talks about how guilty he feels about it.
