My guess is that either the chiefs or Berry were reluctant to have the surgery, and the injury was much more nagging throughout the season than they expected

My guess is that they thought it would heal. That he could play on it this season with some R&R like in years past. And that never happened.

As you mentioned above Wall played on his for 4-5 seasons until he said he couldn't take the pain anymore or that he didn't want to be traded so he had the surgery.

Less than it would be if the ACL snaps. They cut the ACL and reattach it surgically after breaking out the Dremel and sanding down the Haglund.
