If I get blasted, so be it.
I watched episode one, and it seemed like they’re trying too hard to be moody and dark. I’ll watch it til the end but it’s not grabbing me. Hope it improves. |
|
My hunch is that this season won’t go as out there with the weird conspiracy stuff and is going to push the envelope more with storytelling technique and themes around memory and experience with the multiple timelines.
I may be wrong, and the dolls are indicating as much, but I don’t see some insane Carcosa mindfrick with all the infinite possibilities and insane speculation that we saw in Season 1. Which, I think, is ultimately a good thing. Much of our disappointment with season 1 was the letdown of the reality of the narrative vs the fantasy buildup we had all created. |

For what it's worth, Pizz has stated that there's no unreliable narrator plot executed through Hays' dementia. I'm thinking the angle is going to be police corruption / mob justice. I haven't rewatched it, but I'm pretty sure one of the attorney's questioning Hays' memory issues in 1990 is going to be a reference to Hays' being caught lying about something from the past relating to a case and not demonstrative of people being aware of his actual cognitive faculties. |

First couple episodes are good, acting and plot are on point. They are developing these characters nicely. |
Ali is an outstanding actor and the 1st 2 episodes were both really good.

Ugh. Boring. Flat.

Kind of agree. Completely erase Season 1 from your memory, and all the expectations that come with it. Now watch Season 3, and it's just, okay. Stephen Dorff is miscast and cannot affect a southern accent-- nor is he that compelling of an actor. I see no chemistry between him and Ali whatsoever. I grew up in southern Missouri and spent a lot of time in Arkansas; my memory of it is a place rich in unique culture (not to mention quirkiness) that they could have tapped into to make this story more interesting. Season 1 did a great job of using southern Louisiana's setting to impact the story-line, and Season 2's use of LA's seedy underbelly was even better (than this season). Season 3, outside of throwing around some names of local towns, could be set in Iowa, Kentucky, Indiana, Oklahoma, etc. Creeping camera shots, close ups of Mahershala Ali's face, moody music do not build suspense in and of themselves. Not to mention-- and I'm not dissing his acting skills--- but lots of mumbling/low talking from him. Season 1 was lightning in a bottle. I'll continue to watch, and my disagreement with 90% of folks isn't implying anything. I just expected more after such a long hiatus. |
Story line is mildly interesting at best. Angry father/mother roles are over acted in my opinion. I have had to crank up the volume and replay several of the Hays scenes because of the aforementioned low talking and mumbling. I attribute to Ali laying on the Arkansas accent just a bit too much.
I'll keep watching though, in the hopes that it gets better. |
Subtitles guys.
|
After seeing E1 at the screening, I was worried people were going to think it was a little slow and plodding at the beginning. I enjoy a good character drama, so it's fine with me, but I can understand the criticism.
I think it will pick up steam a bit in E3. |
Subtitles, as said above, are the way to everything.
I've seen enough in the first two episodes to keep me intrigued, at the very least. Feeling a lot better about this than I was early in S2, problems started emerging there from the onset. |
I'll admit to having a hard time maintaining focus on this through two episodes. Honestly felt like a slog.

I’ve got to say that I’m a fanboy of this season since I know every location well and know a writer who starts in in episode 5. That being said: its moving sloooooow. I hope we get some fireworks next week. |
NWA weirds me out. It's always seemed 'different' for reasons I can't really explain.
McDonald County in MO is kind of the same way but there's something that just seems to change the further along 71 you go toward Fayetteville. Not saying I've had any bad experiences in y'all's neck of the woods but it's always been there for me. |

That bag didn't look like weapons when he picked it up but my first thought was that it was guns and ammo.

I’m enjoying this season but damn it’s slow |
I didn't get into the first two seasons, but I really like this one. The flashbacks in three different eras make it intriguing. It took about 1/2 the first episode to get to like the black detective. I just found out he's the actor in The Green Book, which I haven't seen but heard it's good. My wife and I always watch ID channel, so this is right up my alley.
My only experience with Arkansas was about 1976, my first wife was from Tulsa and we were driving on I-40 going from Savannah, Georgia to Tulsa. I didn't want to get gas in Memphis because it was busy and it was late at night, so I kept going. As I got further west there wasn't many, or any options for gas. Finally at Ft. Smith I pulled off the interstate and ended up right in a downtown area. The only place with lights on was the police station. There was one cop by himself sitting behind a desk, I said I need gas bad. He said, federal law requires gas to be available every so often on the interstates. He said, how much do you want, and I said $10. He asked for the money and gave me a key. He said go across the street and unlock the pump and get your gas and lock it back and bring back the key. That's my biggest memory of Arkansas. I did like Tulsa a lot. |
Yea just meh. I guess Fukunaga was the reason for the first seasons brilliance. I'll keep watching tho.
|
Purple Hayes is all about the black-on-white inmate rape. Jesus.
|
Y'all complaining about the slow burn and that's part of the ****ing charm, bitches. They capped off tonight with a bang holy shit.
|
I definitely felt the tension and action rising throughout this episode. It’s like they had to get us good and settled in the world and get our heads wrapped around the timelines before taking off. I also can’t wait for season to conclude so I can go back and binge. I think it will be better binged instead of serialized.
My buddy took over writing duties from Milch, who had to go work on the deadwood project, in episode 5, so I’m ready for next week. |

The ole indian had some fire power ready for them. Damn.
Def edge of your seat tension and man, I've developed quite the fondness for his wife. She's got some edgy hotness. |

The show runner is back in top notch form here. Love that he is making this more focused on ONE character (more of a gritty character study). Season 2 was overstuffed imo .
Ali is an outstanding and deserves all the praise he is getting but I wanna show some love to Dorff too . He is great and darkly funny in his sidekick role & hopefully he'll get better roles in the future . We are at the half way point of Season 3 and its been great so far and I won't speculate or even try to predict how it'll end. Just gonna enjoy the last 4 episodes should be a doozy . |

Plagiarizing a reddit commentor here: Mahershala Ali's playing the protagonist but Dorff is playing the hero. |
So there are only 8 episodes? If so the last 4 episodes are gonna be pretty jam packed.

And since it's Super Bowl Sunday, episode 5 might be dropping Friday for anyone with streaming access.

I fell asleep during the last 15 minutes of Episode 5. Sorry, it's just not grabbing me at all. This season isn't terrible, it's just achingly slow and so poorly paced as to be uninteresting. I've never seen Mahershala Ali before (not that I can recall), and everyone says he's a great actor-- but he's not doing anything spectacular in this series except trying too hard to be a black quasi Rustin Cohle. I don't think it's his fault, his character is just written that way. There's no angle or subplot that has been dangled or teased in any interesting way to make me care; and again this could be rural Anytown, USA-- they whiffed on working any unique nuances of Arkansas into the script.
My wife turned to me and said she didn't care if we even finished the season. If some weird contractual matter forced the rest of the episodes to go un-aired, I have to say I wouldn't be bothered that much. |

Every time Hayes is going to have sex with his hot wife, they cut away and imply it. Too Bad. She's smokin hot.
