Have you been to springfield lately? The Macadoodles have turned out to be pretty awesome, much to my surprise.

We have a Macadoodles in Joplin that pretty solid. The ones in Arkansas get ALL the good stuff though.

4 roses single barrel is excellent. One of best bourbons you can have under $50.

I’m not a huge small batch fan of theirs though. For cocktails yes but not neat.

Somehow I've gotten on the VIP mailer at the north side one here, I got to know the manager a little.

I've gotten a few good buys from it. Waiting for some Pappy's to come across the airways though.

I'll run it by some of you guys when I get the emails. If any interest I can get it to you.

The single barrel is unquestionably better, but I like the small batch fine for the price. Hard pressed to find much better in the $30 range, though admittedly the market is more crowded. Not to go all Guru, but I find it hard to justify > $40 on the regular. I used to drink Maker’s/Knob Creek regularly, but wanted a step up, even if it is a small step. Granted, I’m a 2 cubes guy, not a neat drinker, so that says plenty.

This was my experience as well with cocktails. Neat it was meh. I'd rather drink Wild Turkey or Buffalo Trace for the price.

I can find a lot better for $30 than their small batch but drink what you like and drink it how you like. As long as it's bourbon, it's all good!

Some others to try if you'd like for $30 and under:
Evan Williams Single Barrel
Elijah Craig
Eagle Rare
Henry McKenna
Russel's Reserve
Larceny

I think Maker's is over-rated. Knob Creek is decent.

Theme is drink what you like though!

Haven’t had Henry McKenna or Russel’s Reserve, but I’ve had the rest, some from their respective distilleries (I just moved to KC from Louisville). For me, I wouldn’t call any of them definitively better, but to each their own!

I don't believe they attempted, or were allowed, to. Structurally unsound and flowing into a nearby creek probably brought out all kinds of badges and red tape.

I'm wondering if they'll be able to salvage some and create a "survivor" blend we can all over pay for.

It's amazing to me how dialed in the bourbon that comes out of Kentucky is compared to people trying to make good bourbon in other states. I wonder what it is about that area that just works so damn well.

I drove through Kentucky back in 2005 when I found a feed truck on the internet to go check out. Driving through the countryside all the barns were painted black. Really weird. That place is slam full of Omish people. Wonder if they were all drunk on barn paintin day ?

Weller SR - Weller Special Reserve - the cheapest and shortest aged Weller wheated bourbon at 90 proof.

OWA - Old Weller Antique - aged 7 years and coming in at 107 proof.

Evan Williams for Bourbon, Crown Royal for Whiskey. The Rieger Whiskey was a small bottle, like 750ml. It usually goes for around $45 a bottle, but I got mine on sale at Hy Vee.

I just started bourbon like 6 months ago (friend got me in to it) I would start with Buffalo Trace. One of the best cheap ones around. They are impossible to find out here in PA.

Drink that bottle and get used to the taste. Try it neat and then with ice. Huge difference. My favorite is angles envy but I am currently doing Elijah Craig which I like.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2624216149.jpg

Trying to find something not too expensive in the $30 range that can actually be somewhat readily bought a i stop drinking on my hard to find stuff so much. Went to the store tonight and picked up some Russels 10 yr.

Tried Basil Hayedens in this price range last time and it was fine.

If I could find Buffalo Trace in the $30s, I'ld be all over that all day. Where we are, if you can find it, it's $50+. Still worth it, but not necessarily an every day whiskey. I can get a 1.75 handle of Elijah Craig for $38...that's more doable.

Thanks guys. My local shop has really stepped up their beer game lately, and I thought I'd check to see if that was the case with spirits as well.

They didn't have any of those bottles y'all mentioned, though. lol The guy knew all about them, just said they don't carry them.

To me, Woodford is bourbon that folks like when they want "smooth". It's just not for me. I like my bourbon to have some fire to it and Woodford typically has a lot less character and complexity than even a lot of my favorite cheap bourbons.

When it comes to bourbon, start with Evan Williams white label. If you like it, move on from there.

Marcellus 08-09-2018 09:21 PM

Having some Jefferson's "Very Small Batch" tonight.

They buy other bourbons and blend them. For $24 its pretty solid.

Miles 08-09-2018 09:33 PM

Blantons continues to be my favorite and benchmark for non cask strength. I’m rationing the hell out of what I have and wondering if anyone has a suggestion for a substitute that you can actually buy?

I can find Blanton’s here every few months but it’s now going for $70 here.

No thanks at that price.

You want it and I can get it for you though. Have an Arizona Barrel pick for $75 I can likely find too.

Let me know.

Exactly this for me too.

Smooth isn’t a characteristic I care about. To me that’s a fairly boring bourbon. I want a little fire and complexity on the finish.
