The cherry wood smoked woodford masters edition this year is great

If I’ve had better bourbon than Blanton’s I can’t recall it by name.

Blantons is pretty common around here, but you have to fight like a gladiator to get a few bottles of buffalo trace. I'll have a look at the bottled date on a few blantons. Ive even got an in on a guy at the govt controlled liquor control at the state, I might be able to find that date...

Buffalo Trace flows like water here in Atlanta. Blantons is hard as hell to find.

Understandable...I live in a state that has a monopoly on liquor, so they tax the ever loving shit out of it. A bottle of Blantons is $60...and Buffalo Trace is $27...if you want to drink bourbon, your choice is limited unless you're independently wealthy

Sorry if it's been addressed already, but what is everyone's opinion of neat, but cold bourbon?

I'm still in the large ice cube phase, and everytime I try to switch to neat, the temperature turns me off.

Gotta have it cold.

Do you like it ice cold or just slightly chilled? Anything with ice will dilute and change its characteristics some. On some bourbons it may help. Or get some whiskey stones and keep in freezer one or two slightly chill but doesnt change the flavor.

srvy 03-25-2018 11:17 PM

Also many bourbon drinkers that purchase bottles of 55 abv or higher will keep a little bottle of water to give it a splash to cut the alcohol down. As the kinda gauge for liver damage starts at around 55 abv. Scotch drinkers do this a lot due to this scenario. So if your a heavy Whiskey drinker anything 110 proof or greater beware without a splash of h2o the liver is more at risk.

If I'm reading between the lines correctly, then a 1.75L of Wild Turkey 101 every couple of days is okay, but even moreso with a splash of water? [emoji6]

Buffalo Trace is readily available here. I’d ship a few bottles to in exchange of a Blanton’s.

Those are the prices found on those here in AZ with Blanton’s nearing $70 in the few places where it might hit the shelves for a few days.

You can drink cask strength neat but you have to be sensible with it. I am trying to find the whiskey.com article that went into detail on this.

Both out of the same Buffalo Trace distillery some say very little difference between the two besides price. Reviewers have them pretty even. I like Buff Trace better than Blantons but maybe im just a seeker of best bang for the buck.

As a everyday drinker Old Grand Dad 100 BIB is a old favorite when I find it in stock. I would like to try this OGD 114 that https://www.whisky.com/whisky-databa...114-proof.html gives high marks. I have not seen it before has anyone had this?

Oh ya the big daddy OGD114. Its got some heat to it, not for the faint of heart. Its pretty prevalent around here (Wichita)

Decent when you consider the price. Nothing amazing though and the finish had some heat. I like it as a relatively inexpensive bourbon in bourbon heavy cocktails. I wouldn’t go out of my way to find it though.

I figured this article could provide some value to anyone here who may buy or trade bourbon/beer on social media platforms. It's regarding changes to section 230. I know Reddit banned all alcohol related trading platforms last week and there's some talk that these changes could extend to other platforms such as Facebook. I actually had an open beer trade in progress on Reddit last week when the sub was banned.

RU talking about just the basic Buffalo Trace whiskey? On the West coast it's $25 every and easy to buy.

A8bil 03-27-2018 05:33 PM

My go to daily is Elijah Craig small batch, mostly because I can get it in 1.75 ltr for $40. Good whiskey at that price.

BT is 21 a bottle in Missouri. Blantons is 50 to 55 here not as easy to find as before. They are both distilled at the buffalo trace distillery.

I haven't had a BT in awhile, but my memory of it was that it was smooth, but not very distinctive tasting. I like a bit richer tasting whiskeys.

Don’t I know it. Anywho, he has a 12/6 and a 2/2 on hand, but knows someone with a 1/23. Apparently they keep a running spreadsheet with who has what bottles specially for this type of thing (wtf?). Said he’d text me when he finds it. You bourbon folks make beer folks look mild.

Also, any thoughts on Wathen’s? Sampled their single barrel and barrel proof while I was in today and really enjoyed the sweetness of it.

FWIW Blanton's is our Derby bourbon so I'm curious. I just checked the bottle we have for May and its dumped on date is 7/20/17. Now you have me and the Mrs curious.

Very awesome idea. Unfortunately our normal liquor store quit carrying it so we have a hard time getting it. They keep their expensive stuff in a locked up glass case so I'll look when I'm there on Monday.

I still need to make a setting for the wife's toppers. She has the whole set. I should have done that over the winter.

So true.

I remember slowly siphoning bourbon into a plastic bottle out of my dad’s bottles over months and month in high school. After months sitting in plastic, you’re only choice not to taste ass was mixing with Mountain Dew. LMAO.

It’s a very rare find in bourbon dessert Arizona. Most stuff is hard to get here. I buy bottles of bourbon when we hit California since most I can’t get here.

Close enough to bourbon to be here man. And it's a great pour for the price considering it's high rye content. I have a big 1.75L bottle of this I got from Costco.

Good drinking!

That 1920 is great stuff. Well worth the price.

Is that Lagavulin 12 the really smokey stuff. I think that's what I had once at a friend's and the smoke taste was too much for me to enjoy. It was very unique though. Unlike anything I've ever tasted.

Eagle Rare is about my favorite bourbon out there. When I consider price it is so good. It is pretty much my daily drinker. Have a case saved and 5 bottles of store pick. Getting harder to find on the shelves.

Nah...you're thinking of the 16 year, which is very peaty with lots of phenols. The 12 is a special edition that is lighter on the peat but perhaps a bit stronger on the phenols. Reminds me of a Springbank 15 year in some ways. Great dram.

And I agree, High West making some good products.

I cleaned the shelf at Walmart neighborhood market last summer when Walmart culled the shelfs of upper shelf Whiskeys. It was closed out at 15 bucks a bottle. Cant beat that although Costco sells Redemption Rye at a little over 13 bucks which in my opinion for mixed drinks is no slouch.

The popularity of small batch bourbons has made finding old favorites once plentiful a futile waste of gas and effort. I can find all the Bookers I want around town but its better brother Bakers 107 is non existent. Also Rowan's Creek and Noah's Mill has disappeared in the KC area where it used to be plentiful.

I prefer Booker's over Baker's, personally.

And I was by no means arguing with your taste, we like what we like.

Tonight I have decided a little Wathen's is in order. I haven't dipped into this stuff in some time.

I have and enjoyed it. Granted, I don't know shit and after reading up on Wathen's, I was a bit turned off by their lack of process disclosures and their reviews sucked, but damn if I didn't like what I've had from them. On the sweet side, imo.

Give it a try, if you can find it. I got it as a birthday present this year (about 3 months ago) and enjoyed the shit out of it.

When I’m drinking, I go by the adage, Love is Blind :)

Has anyone tried Straight Edge? I nearly polished off an entire 1/5 the night of my 50th Birthday Party. It’s one of the easiest drinks on a couple of cubes. Fantastic!

My arm is officially twisted.

I always wanted to try some of the varieties from Islay Isle, but I'm probably a little too low brow to appreciate what supposedly makes it special.

Getting the boy in for his first dip in the pool this evening.

Bourbon will be had.

I’ll report back.

I’ve had it. Big fan of Dave Phinney...same guy who owns the Orin Swift brand (famous for the Prisoner blend). I think it’s great but some true Kentucky bourbon fans think it’s a joke, over-oaked, and too sweet.

I agree with you. It’s way to damn easy drinking...in a good way.
