Seems to have a fun, old fashioned Halloween feel to it.

patteeu 10-28-2008 02:37 AM

I saw High School Musical 3 on opening day. It was pretty similar to High School Musical 1 and High School Musical 2 (big surprise). I tapped my toe to the music and it kept me entertained enough to sit through it with my youngest daughter without feeling too much self pity. The theater was packed but I only counted 3 other adult males in the place and only a handful of boys. The rest of the crowd were moms with their extremely excited young daughters.

You can probably do better with a different flick unless you have a young daughter to please.

In the Mouth of Madness is quite good. Never seen the others.

Prince of Darkness was ok. Probably the last decent John Carpenter horror flick.

Didnt care much for IN the Mouth of Madness, but its been awhile since i saw it.

Near Dark is a really cool old Kathryn Bigelow Vampire flick.

IMO Kathryn Bigelow has always been underrated. Shes got great style and knows how to direct an action scene.

I hear shes about to make a comeback with "The Hurt Locker". Its about a bomb squad in Iraq. Ive heard it described as Aliens in the desert.

One of the creepiest movies I've ever seen was Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer. It's not a true horror flick but it's a pretty creepy movie.

Saw Pride and Glory over the weekend. Let me preface my opinion by saying that I am a huge Ed Norton fan,but not even he could save this slow, meandering plot. The first hour is death. Then it gets better, then when you think youre going to get a nice payoff for your patience at the end, you get the most predictable and anti climatic ending possible.

Say it aint so Edward. :( 1/5

Known only as "Zach and Miri" on TV. hahahahaha

The TV ads are horrible. I think this flick is gonna bomb, but not because its bad.

They cant effectively advertise what the flick is about and all the jokes are R rated.

Their posters are amazing.

And I hope at the end it persuades people to boycott the MPAA.

Kind of what I am thinking as well. Though with Smith and Rogan there is a bit of a built-in audience that will see it.

Just watched "The Lazarus Project" with Paul Walker, very good psychological thriller, definetly worth a rent. His best movie that i've seen and did a good job acting in it, shockingly. Straight to DVD release that makes you almost wonder why it wasn't in theaters.

I am loving Netflix's rating system. Not only for rentals but for movies in theaters. Compared to rotten tomatoes, I find Netflix much more accurate.

So my experiment tomorrow is while I tivo the chiefs game, go see all these movies that are getting better than 3/5 on Netflix:

Sex Drive 3.8
Max Payne 3.2
Saw V 3.6
Zach and Miri 3.9

We will see how close it comes to those numbers when I see em. :)

OK got back. I find it hard to assign arbitrary numbers to movies so I make up my own rating system: (Iam weird)

5/5 - I will watch this movie whenever it comes on cable. good example is Shawshank Redemption

4/5 - A great go to movie if you are with a person that hasnt seen it. But you wont go out of your way to watch it by yourself

3/5 - An okay movie that you would see again if a person you are with wants to see it. Only if there is nothing else better they want to see.

2/5 - Not a horrible movie, but not good. you would give it another chance if someone twisted your arm.
1/5 - A real crapper. Under no circumstances would you ever watch this movie again and recomend to everyone not to see it.

So for the movies I saw:

Sex Drive - Didnt, stupid fandango doesnt put AM or PM in their listings and so the10:15 movie was at night not in the morning like I thought.

Max Payne- I thought this would be a supernatural detective movie, actually it is just a mediocre detective movie. Its saving grace was the awesome slow down action scenes. the supernatural stuff is only drug hallucinations. 3/5

Zach and Miri- I am shocked Smith won his arbitration against the MPAA. This has alot of sex in it. Also, I now want to pee in the butts of Katie Morgan (whose porn career actually started in similar fashion as Zach and Miri) and Elizabeth Banks. They both are incredibly hot in it. Only thing holding the movie back is a considerable slow down of the plot and laughs in the middle of the movie. Also see Dogma. 4/5

Saw 5 - Got the Saw franchise back on track. Cleaned up all the mess of Saw 4 and got back to what made the Saw movies fun: Traps with rules and twists. Lots of gore but a simple plot that made sense, compared to the convoluted steaming shit that was Saw 4. 4/5

BONUS :P
I netflixed Postal because I am a huge Zach Ward fan. (the brother from Titus) What a piece of shit. Uwe Boll strikes again. 1/5

irishjayhawk 11-02-2008 09:53 PM

Zach and Miri was pretty good.

Role Models was also funny as hell, but lacks pretty much any story. It's how you can tell an Apatow comedy from a regular comedy.

I was DEEPLY disappointed with Hellboy. I thought the story was mediocre, and Doug Jones is no David Hyde Pierce.

I could have been disappointed, because Hellboy II was the second half of a double feature including Dark Knight.

DaneMcCloud 11-04-2008 05:50 PM

I know I'm late to the party but I finally watched Iron Man.

The story was predictable but Downey's performance was very good. Bridges was a little over the top for my tastes and Terrance Howard was completely miscast. He's an excellent actor but that role just wasn't right for him and I'm not surprised that he's been replaced by Don Cheadle in the sequel.

I really enjoyed the scene after the final credits, though considering that movie's been announced, it's probably not that surprising anymore.

My pet peeve though was the score. It outright sucked. There was no central theme, just stupid "Hans Zimmer-esque" background music. And the production was awful and phony sounding.

Furthermore, the "heavy" guitar that underscored a few of the battle scene was just utter crap. Not only was it NOT a cool riff or groove, it sounded like fake guitar (either sampled or a POD, ReValver, Amplitube, etc.). It certainly didn't sound like a Marshall, let alone a Diezel or Engl (which is what I think they were going for). I understand all too well that capturing a huge, thick guitar tone is difficult for most so if you're going to do it, hire a producer that produces that kind of music. They obviously didn't and it stuck out like a sore thumb.

Just awful.

I obviously disagree about the feelings of the movie but I have a couple things:

1) Most people I've talked to think Howard is perfect. I got the same impression you did. Subconsciously the first time but definitely the second time. Cheadle looks the part too. Howard just didn't have chemistry with Downey.

2) I'm a huge fan of movie scores and music but I really didn't have a problem. In fact, I thought the trailer's use of Iron Man originally struck me as reeruned. In the film, I didn't get that impression. I'm not sure why. But I didn't think the score DETRACTED from the movie. It might not have been good and certainly it wasn't memorable but it didn't stick out to me.

As far as the music, as I mentioned, that's a pet peeve of mine. I just didn't care for it at all. I'm extremely tired of the same old "Hans Zimmer" score (that includes all of his guys at Remote Control) and was excited to hear a blockbuster with someone other than one of his guys. But unfortunately (IMO), this wasn't even on the same level as one of his normal scores. I was completely underwhelmed by not only the composition but the music production. Blah. Actually, Yuck.

Again, that's just my thing. I know that 90% of the people that watch films (that does not include you) don't pay attention to the score at all.

I'm not sure what the director's cut will fix about Orlando Bloom's god aweful acting job.

Maybe fix a couple holes in the plot, but Christ almighty, he was a bad fit for that role.

This movie needs to go away...GOD WILLS IT!

Well, I was pissed that my two favorite actors in the movie died and both relatively early.

I was just amazed at how bad Orlando Bloom was at being a bad ass.

Oscar wise, Rachel's Getting Married.
Otherwise, Religulous or Changeling.

Jesus, I don't want to see any of that shit.

I want to see Zack and Miri and.....shit...there is a bunch of shitty shit playing!

I guess I'll see Changeling. Though Role Models is getting good reviews.

You don't wanna see Religulous?

Wow. I'm shocked.

I thought it was horrible when I saw it too. But then I was told that the Directors cut is 1000000x better and that I needed to check that out. I'm still waiting to rent that.

I rented the first cut when it came out and thought it had some good moments but was largely horrible. Rented the directors cut about a month ago on Blu-Ray and it was definitly an improvement. I wish I had only seen this cut without the prior cut clouding my memory but the second cut was actually somewhat good.

Watched two tonight.

Get Smart - I had little expectations which probably helped but I rather enjoyed this for what it was.

The Happening - Ugh.

What did they change so much to make it better?

The only thing that I could forsee them putting in there would be a little bit more about his journey so that could explain his behavior a little more.

Damn it, I watched I am Legend last night. You guys were right, but my dumbass watched it anyway. Why couldn't I have listened to you guys.

I also caught the last half of Desperado last night. Terrible but kinda fun. It was good for a change up.

The main character had some sort of duel personality disorder (think Fight Club) but I'm still confused as to many other points in the film.

If you noticed early in the film when he was in prison all the other cells were empty so I'm pretty sure that part is all in his head as well which leaves open the question 'what the hell is real what's imagined'?

I think one would have to dissect the film to figure out what's real and what isn't for it to make sense. I understand exactly where you're coming from in WTF?

I came here looking for the same thing. Since no one here seems to know, I looked on imdb and found a reasonably thorough explanation.

Warning: The link contains spoilers.

It added a decent amount of plot development which helped with several character's behavior and particularly with the Eva Green one. Basically the 45 minutes or so that were cut were fairly important to the overall storyline.

I'm fairly certain it's "Nobody PUTS Baby in a corner."
