This isn't bottom shelf old forester. Old forester makes a range of bourbons from cheap to expensive. The one he has pictured is good. Released once per year and not many bottle produced. 12 years of age. Along with their 1897 and 1920 bourbons, these are all great old forester bourbons that should go down easy.

Damn thats a nice hat and shirt wish my Costco had that promotion. Dont care about the sack or orange glasses. Im not a huge Bulleit fan but admit never tried the rye whiskey of theirs.

Hard to find a lot of good but even cheap and easily available bottles of bourbon that are plentiful in other states, but very limited or not available here in AZ. So when I was in California last weekend I snagged a few bottles to bring back here.

Love the Wellers. Havent had a chance to try Mckenna, but off the top of my head I dont think I liked the Sazerac for some reason. Does it have somewhat of a sour taste?

Not sour from my tasting but we all taste bourbons/whiskey a bit different. It's got a spicy rye type profile but a bit more fruity than other ryes. This is likely due to Sazerac 6 being only 51% rye, just barely meeting the requirement for the “straight rye” designation. It has a higher corn content, thus giving it a sweeter and fruitier flavor.

People seem to love McKenna and say that once word gets out, it will be hard to find like the Old Weller Antique I managed to snag.

Indian Chief 06-13-2017 02:06 PM

Can't get Weller in NJ unfortunately so I always grab a bottle when I'm down south.

Yup, Weller has been missing from AZ for years. Looks like I'll need a yearly trip to Cali, if only for the bourbon. :D

srvy 06-25-2017 12:27 AM

I set out on a restocking as I normally do before the 4th as I find the Bourbons well stocked again. I was disappointed most what I set out for wasnt to be found at my usual haunts. Had my heart set on Rowans Creek at 30 bucks its the steal of the century my favorite of any I have tried strictly for its finish. Only luck was Bookers at sams club for 55 bit it was 40 last year but is worth it. Got a buy on Russel Reserve and picked up I.W. Harper 15 yo. Was hoping to score Smooth Ambler 7, Old Bardstown Estate Bottled and Noah's Mill oh well next time.

The Old Forester Birthday is probably my favorite bourbon on the planet right now. But it's becoming VERY hard to find these days.

I've been drinking a lot of High West these days; particularly the Campfire. I stopped by a small liquor store in a tiny Colorado town a few weeks ago, and was blown away - they had a Pappy 12 sitting on the shelf for $50. That'll be saved for a special day.

I am the same. I had a few bottles and I just don't care for it with much better options at the same price point.

I love other options from Buffalo Trace distillery though. Eagle Rare, EH Taylor, Weller, Stagg, Blanton's, Elmer Lee (haven't had), Sazerac.

Well my fellow bourbon loving planeteers I finally got to live like the other half. A very generous friend opened his bottle of Pappy 15 he got back in November.

It was delicious. Very good bourbon front to back. I would gladly pay retail for it if it was available but it's not worth what it brings on the secondary market. Sad to say it might have been my first and last pour.

He also had a bottle of Eagle Rare 17 that I had a pour of. It was also very good but the Pappy was better.

I will buy it at 20 bucks any day I like it pretty well great bang for buck. I picked up a bottle today at wally world market near me at 20 bucks and change before tax. Hell thats 2 bucks more that my daily drinker Evan Williams white label. Its good stuff I think its now out there so much now that people forget this is still small batch. But i got ****ed when I got it home the old bag that checked me out I wasnt paying attention and she didn't remove the security cap. I looked all around for my receipt cant find so how do you take it to customer service they are gonna think ya stole it. Freaking Walmart old goat probably had a alcoholic hubby and hated bourbon drinkers.

Kinda how I felt about Pappy's its ok pretty darn good but I can find plenty of bourbons in 40 to 50 price point I like as well or even better. The Houston oilmen always stock the bar well when the after construction celebration happens. The guys come to me all giddy crowing to me they got Pappy's 15 back there. I go and look for what I haven't had thats more exciting to me maybe im crazy.

Owner purchased a big lot of wine and to close the deal the distributor rep promised the Pappy. She thought it was best to put it on the shelf
and let her customer base enjoy it. I was blown away!

Total newb question here but are there any whiskeys/bourbons that are the same proof as say Sailor Jerry's? I've been drinking that lately as it gets you buzzed pretty quick and I don't mind the taste.

srvy 06-27-2017 01:51 PM

Old Granddad 100proof bottled in bond.

Wild Turkey
Old Overholt
Just look for a bourbon with abv 50 or better those will kill ya.

Current batch of Stagg Jr is 130 proof.

Knob Creek Single barrel is 120.

Sailor Jerry is only 92 proof. Most bourbons are 90 so easy to match proof.

I'd venture to bet Wild Turkey 101 would be your buzz and price point.

srvy 06-27-2017 06:06 PM

ABV in the US is defined as half the proof so 100 proof is 50% ACV. A lot of serious bourbon drinkers the magic number is 50 so any over they add a splash of water. Slows down a fatty liver that later turns to sclerosis of the liver. Knob Creek is 55 abv may put a splash water on that one any above that its to your benefit to do same.

From the guy drinking Sailor Jerry's?!?!

Wild Turkey 101 is more expensive than that shitty Sailor drink as well. Wild Turkey 101 is the perfect mix between between still decent (not great), relatively inexpensive and high alcohol content. That's exactly what it sounded like you were looking for? I use Wild Turkey in many of my whiskey cocktail drinks. It's not considered a trash drink as far as I know. It's all distilled at Wild Turkey under the direction of the Russell boys. That's good as far as I'm concerned.

Bulleit Rye is great for cocktails like whiskey sours and Manhattan's as the rye gives a better finish and isn't hidden like other bourbons. Plus the price of Bulleit rye for the amount of rye it contains is a steal! By itself, the Bulleit rye is not great though.

srvy 08-23-2017 08:30 PM

Wish I had discovered this when they marked down. I talked to the manager he said they had a dozen of Makers small batch at 25 bucks it was 56 bucks everytime I checked on it and have herd good things. Also Knob Creek at 20 for 750ml Evan Williams single barrel 10 bucks. I asked him why the heavy discount he would only say they were scaling back and making room. I figure its whats happening in the area as they are locking all behind glass now.

I belong to a Facebook bourbon group here that helps each other acquire hard to find items and also buys private barrels from time to time. Recently just acquired a private barrel 4 roses barrel strength pick, which should be great. Barrels go for about $9k and a few guys went down and hand selected this barrel, paid for it and then 4 roses bottles and labels these and ships them to us in Phoenix. It's a pretty neat process.

Recently a member of this group located a mistake at Coscto on some Michter's Whiskey. They labeled the price at $37 which is their regular rye bottle price. However, the bottles on the shelf were toasted barrel proof instead which run $90+, 110 proof and very hard to locate in Arizona (Arizona is shit for bourbon/whiskey selection!). A guy from the group, who I've met before, bought 12 and sold them to a few members of this group at cost. I was lucky enough to be part of that.
