View Full Version : Football Mason Crosby of Packers: Worst day ever for a kicker? Whole lotta fail!

I've seen some shitty days for kickers, including the losers who have kicked for us and Shall Remain Nameless, but I can't remember any pro kicker in the NFL having a worse day than this hump.

Mason Crosby missed 4 FGs and a PAT to top it off, costing his team 13 points. He was 1-5 on FG attempts, batting .200 on the day. ROFL

How the hell could the coach send him out there on FG attempt #4 after missing the three??? :hmmm: WTF! I would have put in the backup kicker.

DETROIT -- Mason Crosby got so desperate that he even tried a change of footwear during his disastrous kicking day.

The Green Bay Packers' longtime kicker switched cleats after he missed his third field goal of the first half in Sunday's 31-23 loss to the Detroit Lions. He went on to miss two more kicks -- another field goal and an extra point -- before he finally booted one through: a 41-yarder with 2 seconds left in the game.

Packers 'terrible' early, Aaron Rodgers included, in loss at Lions
Rodgers said the Packers' offense was bad in a Week 4 win. In a loss at Detroit, the same could be said of the rest of the team, including the QB.

"Something had to go," Crosby said of the cleats. "I kind of made an adjustment and -- I have three or four pairs broken in every game so it's not unusual for me to do that. But I felt like I needed something to try to spur on the next one."

Still, he became the first NFL kicker to miss four field goals and an extra point in the same game since Rolf Benirschke of the Chargers in 1980, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

"Well, obviously shocked; it's never happened to me," Crosby said. "That's never happened to me. It doesn't happen. So I'm going to evaluate it but I'm going to [chalk] it up to something that is an anomaly in life that I've never even been a part of. So I'm going to evaluate the details like I do every week and move on. Because that one for me is something that I've never been a part of and hope to never be part of again."

Crosby, the Packers' career scoring leader and a 12th-year veteran, made 10 of 11 field goals entering Sunday's game. The only miss was a 52-yarder that would have won the Week 2 game against the Vikings that ended in a tie.

The Packers stuck with him during a slump in 2012, when he made a league-low 63.6 percent of his field goals. In the five seasons that followed, he made 85 percent of his field goals.

"I think he's one of the greatest kickers of all time," Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said. "I've always said he and Robbie Gould, what they do in the elements over the years is some of the finest kicking that I've seen in my time. Obviously he's disappointed. I don't think he expected this. We have a ton of faith in him. He's done it for a long time, made some big kicks for us over the years. They've got to clean the operation up: snap, hold and he's got to make them."

It was especially perplexing given that Crosby's worst day came at a indoor stadium.

Even the Lions were shocked.

"I never seen one like that before, not even in high school or in college," Lions cornerback Nevin Lawson said. "And that's surprising, too, because I still think he's a really good kicker so that was very surprising."

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Crosby's final field goal was an attempt to win the game -- to set up an onside kick that followed -- and made no mention of doing it just to give Crosby a boost in confidence.

"To be honest with you that's a situation you'd like to have more [time]; you'd like to be north of 12 [seconds] there," McCarthy said. "Hey it's like anything, you get to that spot you want to make sure you give your team a chance to win. So making the field goal, desperation play on the onside kick, that was our last chance."

ESPN's Michael Rothstein contributed to this report.

A team/player can have a historical bad day, and in almost every instance the Chiefs fan trump that fail with “in one of our playoff games....”

Eh, he missed all five kicks by a combined like 4 feet. Wasn't like he was shanking them left and right with no accuracy at all. I have no doubts he'll be nailing some 50+ yard kick in December in blizzard conditions as time expires to get the Green Bay Rodgers in the playoffs again.

Noticed there were fewer and fewer “consolers” trying to pick him up as the day went on. Last one I saw all he got was a half hearted tap on the pads from the holder.

He's got a long and successful history and he recovered from a long slump once before. If he were a rookie like the Vikings kicker that missed 3 and caused them to tie Green Bay I'm sure he would be cut.

He’s a paid professional kicker and he was kicking in a dome.

Not sure why there should be any sympathy/empathy for this guy.

The Chargers kicker is making things very exciting for them as well.

I'm surprised that it took an injury for Cairo Santos to get signed. He's no Harrison Butker, but he's pretty good.

I'm still in awe of us picking up Butker from a practice squad. Wasn't it the Panthers' squad? Who on earth did they have that they preferred? Butker is a kicking leviathan.

Green Bay has a penchant for continued employment of schlubs.

See: Rodgers, Aaron - Super Bowl rings - 1.

I mean, teammates trying to pick each other up after a bad moment is pretty normal. I think he just kinda wrung all of it out of them.

Graham Gano, who just kicked a 63 yarder this week.

Justin Medlock.

No. Mason Crosby is an actual kicker that had a bad day.

Justin Medlock is an organizational failure on a whole different level. One of the Chiefs worst picks ever. The guy was a decent enough kicker but mentally, he was a ticking time bomb. They should have seen in their evaluations that he was going to break (literally, have a psychotic break) under the first bit of pressure.

Great college kicker, no doubt.

But I don't see how an NFL staff misses the mental issues the kid had. He missed a few kicks and basically melted down, Syd Barrett style. He literally went crazy.

Crosby possibly imploding after 11 years reminds me of the lump of shit who made it about 11 days...

Because Carl, man. I'd bet decent money he didn't interview him at all.

In his most recent CFL season, Medlock was 38/43 on FG and had a 44.6 yard punting average.

That's kind of amazing.

I can think of a certain Kicker Who Shall Not Be Named who missed 3 field goals in the playoffs back in January of '96.

This also could be guys not knowing what to say anymore. Kickers have such a reputation of being mentally broken and then never being the same again, I would not know how to approach one melting down like that.

I think there is sufficient evidence that SqirminnHerman Motherfucking Sack of Cunt Edwards made a particularly bad environment for kickers. You looks at the guys he rolled through here that were sweaty ballsack in KC and got their shit together elsewhere and the evidence is pretty compelling.

God this franchise is so fucking stupid for hiring that fucking fraud.
