View Full Version : Chiefs Overview of Chiefs Playoff History

Last night I was thinking that because of the Chiefs sad playoff history, we'd lost to just about everybody in the AFC at one point or another. I went to the Chiefs history website, and actually, the history is pretty interesting. The chart includes all the games except the one last week vs. the Texans.
Here's what I learned:
1) Although it feels like Denver (and especially Elway) pushed us down for a decade, we only actually lost to Denver in the playoffs once, and that was against Elway here at Arrowhead.
2) Indy and Miami have actually caused more playoff pain than Denver. We're 0-3 lifetime against both teams. The Colts loss to Harbaugh in the freezer at Arrowhead was by far the worse of these losses, followed by the no-punt game here vs. Five Head. Worst loss to Miami was the Christmas Day game.
3) We've never faced New England in the playoffs before. Weird, since both teams are original AFL teams. They're the only AFC East team we've never met in the playoffs before.
4) KC is 3-0 vs. the city of Houston. Beat the Oilers twice, Texans once.
5) We're 1-1 against the NFC in two Super Bowls.
6) We've never lost to Pittsburgh in the playoffs, so if we can win, and they can beat Denver.....
Besides New England, looks like the only AFC teams we've never played in the playoffs are Cleveland, Cincy and Jacksonville. We've never played Tennessee as Tennessee, but beat them as the Oilers.

I was at a lot of those losses and the last playoff win at Arrowhead.
Not a great record-we need to add 3 more wins on the tally this year.
You forgot the 2013 debacle, also to Indy, which could be the worst of the Indy losses. How have the Chiefs failed so badly against a single franchise?

We've actually lost to Indy 4 times.

Ah, right you all are. This chart doesn't have our two playoff games under the Andy Reid era.....
I think the Kicker Who Shall Remain Nameless freezer loss was worse than the 28-point blown lead loss, because the team had greater expectations in that first one.

I would have guessed 20.

As a minor correction, I don't think we've ever lost to the NFC in the Super Bowl. We're 1-1 against the NFL.

Yeah, you can certainly look at it that way...

I'll also note that Denver has overtly cheated in every playoff game we've ever had against them.

So for the old timers on here, what happened between 1972-1985? Did ownership become complacent?

Steadman, Jack
And blame the guy who kept him employed as GM for all those years, Lamar Hunt.

After Lamar won the Super Bowl, it's almost like he got bored with his team. The next thing was building Arrowhead, then building Worlds of Fun, then starting up an American Soccer League. In the late 70s and early 80's we used to call them "Worlds of Chiefs" because Steadman ran both the Chiefs, and the amusement park.. and ran them both in the same manner... strictly for entertainment. Steadman eventually forced Lamar to hire a football GM...a guy named Jim Schaaf, to be GM. Schaaf was useless too, so they ended up gutting the front office, bringing in King Carl and Marty, and giving Steadman a phony baloney job in the organization so he could still draw a paycheck. Steadman and Lamar were buddies from college at SMU. Steadman basically ran the Chiefs into the ground during his tenure being in charge. The Christmas Day loss in 1971 was the last playoff game for a long time. Not till the Chiefs squeaked into a playoff game in 1986 under Mackovic, then they got their ass kicked by the Jets in NY. Bill Kenney was putrid in that game. That's one reason I hate him so much. Also, after making the playoffs for the first time in 15 years, they rewarded Mackovic by firing him (great move) and putting special teams coach Frank Gansz in charge. He sucked even harder than Mackovic, and all that led to the King Carl/Marty regime coming into play in the late 1980s.

Thanks for that bit of info. Besides that 1 long stretch the Chiefs have made the playoffs rather consistently, just way to many 1 and dones.

It's hard to say that ownership got complacent. I'm not sure it was their intent to have a bunch of bad drafts, but if you look at the drafts in the early and mid-1970s, the team was doomed.
But it all led us down the current path to glory, so the scars have faded. Our time is nigh.

Back in the day we would go to the games. As kids we walked around the entire lower level. It was so empty my dad could see us and holler if it was time to go. You could yell at each other from end zone to end zone and have a conversation. Parking was not a problem- you would go about an hour before the games started-no traffic, and pull up a few rows back on whatever side you wanted.

So...kind of like the Patriots' stadium will be at the end of the third quarter tomorrow.

1994 was a special year. We found a way to lose TWO playoffs games in the same year.

Silver Takeover didn't help. That hurt the Hunt's wealth.

Honestly, we have their number. There are some franchises that always seem to get the best of others, and the Chiefs always beat the Patriots.

38-10 is far worse than the no punt game. Freezer game was pretty bad.
Fuck Indy. Hopefully they suck forever and ever amen.

I honestly was curious yesterday about the history between us, so I looked it up

It does appear we lead the series:thumb:
Also one wierd coin ki dink I noticed was the first ever matchup between the clubs was a 42-14 Chiefs(or rather Texans) loss...
And of course, our most recent match-up, a 42-14 win!!!
What does that mean.... Prolly not a damn thing, just thought it was noteworthy:D
