....
I can't tell you how many times I've been on the streets and people tell me how much they enjoy Don Harman on our morning news. How he makes their day or makes them smile. Don's death is a tremendous loss not just for our newsroom but for all Kansas Citians who relied on his good humor to brighten their outlook on life. He will be difficult, if not impossible, to replace. My condolences to his family. Rest In Peace Don. This was later removed and will not be spoken about until his family can be notified.

Depression is quite prominent in comedians and actors. They get their moments on TV/Stage and "when the cameras aren't rolling" their life is a living hell. I'm not saying Don was a crap meteorologist and just a goof up in front of a green screen at all, but each day the making you laugh (especially his dry humor) was a big part of his deal. He wasn't just doing the weather every 16 minutes for 7 1/2 hours (or however long that damn show runs). People like him, comedians, actors, musicians, famous people die far too early from suicide or drug od's. They can't balance their actual life with their stage life and it ends horribly. Look at the 70-80's SNL cast. Because he was a big deal as I was growing up Chris Farley comes to mind. I think I even watched a show called The Dark Side of Comedy or something like it that showed a gigantic list of performers that killed themselves or partied/OD'd themselves to death. Not sure what makes it happen with some of the best or what the numbers are, but you hear about it in these people all the time. You'd have thought Don was one of the happiest people you'll ever see, but something in these people isn't wired right. The way they do it too sometimes is even more disturbing. A bag over your head........wtf could be that bad that you need to put a bag over your head and suffocate yourself to death?

That's kinda correct and it's a nice generalization and all, but I think its a whole lot more complicated than that, Mr. GoHuge39.
For every entertainer or performer who self-destructs, there are thousands who don't.

Hell, I agree that shit is selfish and wrong. That should go to show you, though, how overpowering and mind-warping depression can be. The guy is a successful newscaster, a D-list celebrity in a small town, has a wife and an infant, and still kills himself. If you give a guy like that even a shred of credit for being able to put together a logical thought, you'd see how overwhelming depression must be to have all those things going for you, yet still wanting to kill yourself. Selfish though it may seem, the "world is better off without me" mentality makes sense within the warped sensibilities of somebody suffering with depression.

It is not so much your phrase, at it is an escape from the sometimes crushing despair, self loathing and pure feeling of hopelessness that all manifest into actual physical pain. There is a reason they call it suffering from depression.
That is what a lot of people do not understand.

Agreed. If you need help....get help.
Maybe "the world is better off without me" is what some people feel ... or maybe it's a fleeting thought ... or one of the various rationalizations that flutter through a diseased mind ... but, I'm not sure that most suicides care all that much about the state of the "world".
Personally, I think that a person either believes they don't deserve to live, or they cannot bear to continue on due to some perceived and imagined future that is intolerable to them.

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but Don, you are an asshole. You leave a wife with an infant son and an infant son without a father. Nice copout. I feel sad that he was going through the depression he was, but there are ways to cope, and offing yourself and leaving a wife and son behind aren't one of them.

I support you on this issue. If you don't want to live for yourself, fine. But stay alive for the people that you love. When I hear about people offing themselves, I usually think "well, bye", but then I get really pissed off when I hear that they leave behind families...sorry sacks of crap.

Excellent post. Depression is a disease. Unless you have suffered from it YOU HAVE NO FREAKING IDEA how bad it is. You don't know how he suffered and while it might seem selfish to you perhaps his wife will be at peace knowing her husband is no longer in such pain. You just don't know. Watching someone sink into that kind of depression leaves those around feeling helpless.
I think Don was the epitome of sad clown. He was wonderfully funny and could be quite jovial but he always had this air of sadness about him. Lately, with the beard he, Mark and Nick, had been growing he looked different. Mark and Nick still looked like themselves but with facial hair. Not so with Don. I know that sounds weird.
Anyway, it's sad. Hopefully it will bring some attention to depression and the terrible illness that it is.

One of my best friends in college committed suicide. He was bi-polar and suffered terrible bouts of depression. He was also a brilliant guy, double major at Mizzou in English and Journalism. Graduated with honors. Went to work in his father's NYC ad agency. Hung himself in his attic after about a year on the job. He would have been a major mojo on Madison Ave by now. For whatever reason, the demons got the better of him.

Criticizing someone who commits suicide due to mental illness is pretty akin to criticizing someone who dies because of cancer.
Mental illness is a disease--biological in nature. No one chooses to be mentally ill.

my wife lost her father to a depression driven suicide. nothing needs to be wrong in your life when you suffer from this for you to feel totally helpless and hopeless. it doesn't matter that everything is good and in it's place, you are still in despair. I hope if I ever have to fight this battle that I'm stronger. I've lost loved ones...you know how it is that for days, weeks, months even, you wake up and for a few seconds everything is OK, and then you remember....he/she is gone forever, and it comes crashing down on you and you are in that dark place again - you have that terrible feeling of.....how will life ever be OK again??? but eventually, over time, life gets back on track. my point being, I think that people suffering from depression feel that horrible dark place all the time and they can't shake that shit off. just think of your lowest darkest hour....and then think of never being able to get out of it - just feeling like that all day every day. my God....
PS - he left a wife and 3 kids. he wasn't an asshole....

Aren't large contributors to depression lack of exercise, poor diet, lack of sleep, stress, etc...?
I know some things are biological and beyond our control, but we can also take responsiblity for own mental, physical, and spiritual health.

To a point, yes. But there are limits if you are depressed. Like the cancer, example, there is only so much you can do. If the disease overtakes you then you have little recourse at some point.

Exercise, sleep, and proper diet can help one feel "better" but if your brain doesn't uptake seratonin, dopamine, and other things correctly, no amount of "living right" constitutes a cure...

any combination of these things can prevent the prevent defense.

lets not act like people don't get called out when they get lung throat or liver cancer. First thing people ask if someone gets lung cancer "Did they smoke?" followed by a smug....yeah Thats why I quit along time ago.
Of course they do. But there is a verifiable and reasonable correlation between lung cancer and smoking. There is no such correlation with mental health issues. It can affect any person of any race, sex, income bracket, age, profession, education, etc.
There is no rhyme or reason to it. Other than, perhaps, a genetic component.

Right, there are many factors. Some we can help and some we can not.
Trust me, I've NEVER met a severely depressed or suicidal person who WANTED to stay that way. I'm not talking pity party depressed. I'm talking chemically imbalanced, been through therapy, meds stopped working, 'the fear of living is worse than the fear of dying' type of depressed.

It may or may not apply in this case, but I'm 100% sure if people stopped hitting the McDonald's drive through and took a walk for an hour a day there would be far less suicides especially in the US. Then maybe their families wouldn't have to suffer from losing a loved one.

Criticizing someone who commits suicide due to mental illness is pretty akin to criticizing someone who dies because of cancer.
Mental illness is a disease--biological in nature. No one chooses to be mentally ill.
Shut up you retard. Everybody uses "mental illness" as a crutch to green-light crap they shouldn't be doing. I'm mentally ill so I shoplift. I'm mentally ill and I can't stop cheating on my wife.... You think murderers aren't mentally ill? Should we not criticize them as well? Don Harman murdered himself. Simple as that. Sorry if I don't buy into your pathetic psychological BS.
At least Denise agrees with you. You got that much. Wow. If that ever happened to me I'd get mentally ill and off myself.

Seems like you hear about some new malady every day that people use as an excuse for their shitty behaviour. The answer is always the same - counseling and drugs, the favorite crutches of a soft society. How about a little SUCK IT UP AND DEAL WITH IT? Agreed. I've been the most depressed post partum or the time before I got the right medication and was 30 pounds overweight. That is the most I've weighed and it certainly did not help my depression. However, lost all the weight and still struggled with the condition before finding the right medication.

Did she have a chemical imbalance?
Depression is a cycle type of thing. Something bad happens. You respond inappropriately. This causes more bad things to happen which, in turn, results in another inappropriate response. Repeat. No Rinse.
The problem can relate to a chemical imbalance, obviously. That does happen. But more often than not, it's a slow decline that can be traced back to a cause and a response that reinforces the cause.
Obesity is a great example, actually. A girl tells you that you suck and she'll never date you. Now, she may just be a bitch or simply not the soul-mate you imagined she might be. But, the depressive personality responds by eating ice cream to feel better. This causes him to gain 5 pounds. The next time he musters sufficient bravery to ask out another girl, she laughs and calls him "fatty boy" and it's off to Baskin-Robbins for some Chocolate Chip Peppermint love.

I changed her wallpaper to WWF superstar STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN. I then Drank some Budwieser while she tried to dial for help. WDAF Meteorologist Don Harman Dies From Apparent Suicide
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvspy/files/2011/11/DonHarmon_Weather.jpg
Don Harman, the longtime morning meteorologist at WDAF in Kansas City, died yesterday.
Sources say Harman’s death was a suicide, although the station has not yet announced an official cause of death. The 12-year veteran of the station was on the air as recently as yesterday.
Before WDAF’s Karli Ritter delivered the weather report on this morning’s newscast, anchors Mark Alford and Loren Halifax read a statement similar to what the station posted on Facebook early this morning.
“We know many of you have questions,” the statement reads. “We appreciate your concern, and we consider you our friends. But please remember that family comes first. We’re honoring that right now, and we ask that you join us in that. Please bear with us for a little while longer.”
NewsBlues reports that WDAF is holding back an official announcement on Harman’s death until his father is contacted.
There has been an outpouring of well-wishes from Kansas City viewers on Facebook and Twitter, but on-air talent has so far avoided a direct mention of Harman’s death online.
“Fox 4 lost a great member of our family today,” reporter Eric Burke wrote on Twitter, directing followers to the statement on WDAF’s Facebook page.
Harman has been the morning meteorologist since he joined the station. He began his career in television at WTAP in Parkersburg, WV, working at KIMT in Mason City and WOWK in Huntington before settling at WDAF in 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Monica, and his daughter, Avery.

Fox 4 Meteorologist Don Harman's Cause of Death to be Released Later Today
Don Harman, meteorologist for the FOX 4 Morning News in Kansas City, died Wednesday, implicitly stated on the station's Facebook page.
The station hasn't officially confirmed Harman's death because his family has not yet been notified, said Fox 4 assignment manager Sindy Gaoma to the IBTimes. She added that the official confirmation and cause of death should be released on the station's Web site at 1 p.m. CT.
An outpouring of Twitter and Facebook questions from viewers after hearing rumors of Harmon's death prompted Fox 4 to respond with a message on the page and during its 4:30 a.m. broadcast. It read:
"Good morning.
We know many of you have questions.
We appreciate your concern, and we consider you our friends.
But please remember that family comes first.
We're honoring that right now, and we ask that you join us in that.
Please bear with us for a little while longer."

According to Harmon's bio on the Fox 4 Web site, he worked the morning news show from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. since April 1999, and many who offered condolences on Facebook remembered him for his humor and fun attitude. He was even awarded the AMS and Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) Seals of Approval, which is given to broadcast meteorologists who are adept at presenting weather to viewers in a manner that enhances the science of meteorology.
Harmon's educational background and career path were also deep. He graduated from Miami of Ohio with a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautics and a minor in geography. He started his meteorologist career at WTAP-TV in Parkersburg, West Virginia, then KIMT-TV in Mason City, Iowa and finally WOWK-TV in Huntington, West Virginia prior to joining Fox 4.
Harman grew up in Ohio and is survived by his wife, Monica, and daughter, Avery.

Depression is a chemical imbalance (at least the type of chronic depression); the feel good stuff is outweighed by the anxiety/don't feel good stuff. Most people don't recognize it and typically try to 'feel good' by taking drugs or alochol. the alcohol just creates a cycle etc.
Certainly, these imblances can be a result of poor diet, lack of exercise, fat etc. But a lot of times they are hereditary. Or, one may even have family with other mental illnesess that are sometimes passed onto them such as traits of Bi-Polarism. While this person might not suffer for full-bore Bi-Polarism, they can suffer from one of the bi-products of Bi-Polarism like depression.
sucks that somone would think suicide would be the only way out; but when someone is that depressed, their brains aren't functioning properly and their though processes are can be irrational.

Don Harman, the fun-loving weathercaster and personality on Kansas City’s most popular morning show, has died, according to a police report.
Harman, a 41-year-old native of Ohio, was hired by WDAF, Fox 4, in 1999 to replace Gary Lezak and quickly became part of a high-spirited team that was No. 1 in the ratings for years.
Fans were grieving reports of his death Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning. Inside Fox 4, station managers struggled to balance the online outpouring of sympathy with their journalistic obligation to wait until the next of kin could be notified.
Harman’s close friend Mark Alford looked shell-shocked as he read the announcement at 4:45 a.m. asking for patience from viewers who were bombarding the station’s switchboard and posting messages to social media.
“We know a lot of you out there have questions about what's going on. We do appreciate your concerns. We consider you our friends."
His co-anchor Loren Halifax continued: "We do ask you, though, to remember that family comes first. And we are honoring that.”

Jeff: Ya get this here pot full of water and throw all that extra crap in the fridge in there just like so and no we build a little far to get it hot...
Don: You can't build a fire in here, Sir.
Jeff: How y'all want me to make soup without no danged far?

That was pretty uninformative.
Don Harman, a beloved meteorologist and personality on the FOX 4 morning show passed away Tuesday evening. To all of us, Don was like family, and the news comes as a great shock to all the folks he worked with here at FOX 4.
President and General Manager Cheryl McDonald said “We are very saddened by this tragic loss. Don wasn’t just our Meteorologist, he was a part of our family and we loved him. Words cannot express how deeply he will be missed.”
Don brightened our mornings for more than 10 years and he made his mark on Kansas City television. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and we ask that in this time of sorrow that you respect them and their need for privacy in their moment of grief.

Esto.
Criticizing someone who commits suicide due to mental illness is pretty akin to criticizing someone who dies because of cancer.
Mental illness is a disease--biological in nature. No one chooses to be mentally ill.We are as a society beginning to come around on this issue, but there is still a ways to go.
I use to believe that mental midgets were the only people that committed suicide, but I also thought there was a God floating around in the clouds pulling the strings on everything that happened around here.
Do I still believe it is a selfish act? Yes because there are plenty of avenues available to people with a long term illness to get some help. Someone doesn't wake up one day and shit in a shoebox and then think "let me find a belt to hang myself with." They know they have issues and are either too proud or are so far gone they think there is no way they can be helped.
It would be no different than someone that had a very suspicious looking mole that they just put off and put off getting looked at until it was producing a tremendous amount of pain and a skin depression. They waited so long to get it checked out that when they finally do they learn it is "you're terminally fucked melanoma." Something that caught early could have easily been removed with a simple outpatient procedure or in the case of depression an appropriate regiment of medication and counseling.
Mental illness and physical illness need to both be treated as an illness without any stigma attached. Unfortunately we're not quite there as a society.........but it's getting better. In the case of Don if it is confirmed was a suicide I think it is something that probably could have been treated. I say that only because of his age (he made it this far). Honestly though I always thought the guy was fuckin weird. Not pull a bag over your head to kill yourself weird, but still fuckin weird.
Having said all of that sometimes people are just born fucked up and there isn't anything that is going to help them. That is why we have prisons and insane asylums.

We knew this really wonderful, kind, jovial family man who to the outside world was the perfect family man, worker, friend, husband, Christian, ect. He committed suicide on one of the most awful days and awful ways one could imagine. The type where if anyone could accuse someone of a selfish suicide he would be it.
He was living a lie and in the end couldn't face his demons when they came home to roost. He was drinking heavily on the night he died. I'm not sure if he would have done it if he'd just gone to sleep and woken up the next morning. It was so very tragic. I will never forget the looks on his wife and kids faces at the memorial service.
Alcohol and depression are a very dangerous mix. It will be interesting to learn if Harman had been drinking heavily before he died.

That is a bummer to hear. But I think it goes to show that one's on air or on screen persona may be nothing like who they are in real life. I think it would be really difficult to be 'on' all of the time.

I don't get why people need to know right now. Someone on their FB page responded to a post that included "please respect family privacy" with "how about respecting this family?"..... uh, his coworkers just found out, and his family might not have been immediately available for contact for whatever reason. I know in the world of social media, everyone wants news the instant it's available, but watching the weather doesn't give you immediate access into what goes on in his personal life... FFS, maybe give them a few hours?

That was what I read about his boss (Chief Metrorologist Mike Thompson) in a gossip column piece about 11-12 years ago. That article described Mike Thompson as having a "cut-throat" personality who almost single-handedly got rid of the pro-union employees when they tried to form a union at the station, including his midday meteorologist.
I've been wondering if Mike had some kind of meeting with Don yesterday afternoon that could have contributed to this.

The rumor is that he died as a result of suicide. Even though actual cause of death has yet to be determined, when Harmon's wife was interviewed, she refused to disclose any information leading up to his unexpected death. That sounds kind of fishy if you ask me.
There was this guy who was on television one time who was a forest ranger. This guy had been struck by lightning on 7 separate occasions. 7 times struck by lightning.
Once while he was walking, once while he was in the lookout tower, once while he was sitting at his desk, once while he was hiding under a bed, once while hiding under a desk, once while he was hiding under a trailer, and once while he was running like hell. It was like the lightning would just find him no matter where he was.
Anyhow, he was on this old talk show and he brought in a bunch of forest ranger hats with the tops all burned out and some shoes that had been blown apart and some pants that were shredded and charred.
I was just thinking how much that guy must have wanted to live even though he was some kind of lightning magnet whereas some guys have a reasonably good life where they aren't struck by lightning all the time, but they don't want to live any longer.
It's a crazy world.

The rumor is that he died as a result of suicide. Even though actual cause of death has yet to be determined, when Harmon's wife was interviewed, she refused to disclose any information leading up to his unexpected death. That sounds kind of fishy if you ask me.
Bro it isnt a rumor its fact Last night it was a rumor It was confirmed about 12 today thru the police report
Where on earth are you getting your info?

The morning crew is pretty torn up on air even making me shed a tear. Sounds like he had pretty depression. Mark Alford one of the anchormen was talking about how everyone was trying to get him help.

Wow, this morning has been a difficult watch. I'm so glad they are talking about his depression and mental health. It's going to help raise awareness and maybe even save lives if they take it on as a cause.

Oh, indeed. Despression awareness is at an all-time high. There are now 300,000 people in the KC metro who are depressed because their little weather buddy offed himself.

Don't beat yourself up over this. I'm sure it wasn't the main reason he did it, only one of many.
Oh great.....now I am depressed.

As to cause of death, nobody has confirmed exactly how he died. I've heard a lot of theories, this morning I heard a rumor that he was huffing, and that's what killed him. So it may have been accidental lethal overdose, not really suicide.

LMAO huffing? Isn't that for hobos and 14 year old worthless kids?

A kid around these parts that was a friend of a friend of the acquaintance of some Murfreesboro trailer trash puke died huffing something ... I'm not sure what it was ... paint, maybe ... or glue. Anyhow, he was using the standard plastic bag over the head technique and killed himself that way.
Maybe that's easier to do than I thought.
Do they just forget to take the bag off?

I assume they just pass out with the bag still on the head.

It's certainly a plausible possibility. But like I said, they may never reveal the actual COD:
From a medical website:
Long-term inhalant abusers can suffer damaging health consequences including:
* depression and mood changes,
* weight loss,
* inattentiveness,
* lack of coordination,
* irritability, and
* weakness.
More serious consequences can include permanent damage to the brain and other organs or even death. Sudden cardiac death from fatal cardiac arrhythmias has been reported even in teen inhalant abusers. Death from huffing can occur upon the first time of use, or after prolonged inhalant abuse. Other causes of death include asphyxiation, aspiration, or suffocation.
Chronic inhalant abuse may result in serious and sometimes irreversible damage to the user's heart, liver, kidneys, lungs, and brain. Brain damage may result in personality changes, diminished cognitive functioning, memory impairment, and slurred speech.
I assume they just pass out with the bag still on the head.
I am unfamiliar with this practice. What is it exactly that they ... "huff"?
I knew this Italian chick in LA who used to wander around in grocery stores and pop the tops off whipped cream topping bottles and breathe in the fumes. She had nice, little, round tittahs and pretty hair and really nice dark eyes, but she was kinda nuts. She was originally from Kansas City and I think she's a waitress at some restaurant there now, actually. I'm not sure if that's a coincidence or not, though.
Is it like that? Whipped cream fumes, I mean?
