Broncos agreed to terms with CB Champ Bailey on a four-year extension.
Bailey, 33 in June, wanted to join a contender for his twilight years. The Broncos aren't close to contention, so it would have made sense for both sides to move on. Executive VP John Elway made it a priority to bring back Bailey as a team leader and defensive backbone, however, and increased guaranteed money surely made it happen. Bailey is still playing at an elite level at corner, so talk of moving to safety should hold off for at least another year. Bailey's signing makes it less likely that Denver will settle on LSU's Patrick Peterson at No. 2 overall in the draft.

Good corners are nowhere near as important as good players on the DL. Champ is the best corner to ever play and we have had some BAD defenses with him because we couldn't stop the run or get a pass rush. This is the best DL class in over a decade and if Denver doesn't use that #2 pick on the DL Elway should be fired immediately.

Now, on to my opinion of the situation...I think a 4 year deal is foolish, but I doubt even Elway is dumb enough to make it a "REAL" 4 year deal and instead made it a 2 year voidable deal with a bunch of upfront money (that Champ has likely earned during his time there and what he brings to the lockerroom and team chemistry as well as on field play) that is just printable as a 4 year deal to make it look good.

Village idiot is right in the fact that DL is more important that corners and safeties but in this situation they should (IMO) draft Peterson and do like Washington did back in the day in the Deion/Champ situation and let the kid mentor under Champ and learn under fire on the field...I think that defense will be better off long term that way.

Bowers is overrated and Fairley will have a transition period longer than most expect (he is not even in the same zip code as Suh in terms of overall dominance or readiness for the next level)

9/10 times Im the guy wanting the linemen on defense over almost any other position (except pass rusher in a 3-4) but this is a case in which that defense has many many needs (almost a TOTAL overhaul) and the opportunity to ensure the transition of a certain player should hold more weight in this specific situation than most others.

If Denver drafts Peterson, their fans would boo, but they would likely have a true shut down corner for the next decade (barring injury) and that isnt always an option. I would draft Peterson at 2 or move down a few slots if I could and draft the kid.

Here's your breakdown... Champ makes some valid points in his comments about the grass not always being greener, but it is a huge leap of faith on both parts. That's a lot of $ for a soon to be 33 year old CB and they're a long ways from contending for a guy looking for that playoff success.

I can live with the deal - Champ has at least 2 good seasons in him and he's been very productive, so this allows them to focus elsewhere for upgrades.
