http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Joe-Montana-scores-another-touchdown-for-reality?urn=ncaaf-268408

Biopic fans will be shocked – shocked! – to learn that Hollywood takes liberties with the real-life narratives and characters that often come to stand in for history in the popular imagination. In the case of the enduring 1993 hit "Rudy," the film was so unrecognizably warped (http://espn.go.com/page2/s/merron/021202.html) beyond the existence of an undersized Notre Dame player who registered an improbable sack against Georgia Tech in 1975 that former Irish coach Dan Devine called certain scenes – notably the climactic moment when Rudy's teammates confront Devine's villainous character by handing in their jerseys to get Rudy on the dress list, and later his reluctance to actually put Rudy in the game – "unforgivable" and "a lie."

Hall of Famer Joe Montana, then a lowly freshman lingering somewhere on the depth chart, doesn't remember it quite as harshly. But as he told radio host Dan Patrick on Wednesday, he certainly doesn't remember any uplifting strings swelling in the rafters (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/danpatrick/listenlive.player.html?file=http://ht.cdn.turner.com/si/danpatrick/audio/2010/09/08/DP-Joe_Montana-09-08-10_Interview.mp3), either:DP: Were you there when Rudy was there?

JM: Yeah. It's a movie, remember. Not all of that is true.

DP: What wasn't true?

JM: Well, the crowd wasn't chanting. No one threw in their jerseys. He did get in the game. He got carried off [at the end of] the game. [...] Back then they tried to play someone at the end of [the season] that all the seniors could get in the last home game.

The schedule was kind of set that way. So he got in. He did get a sack. And then the guys carried him off, just playing around. I won't say it was a joke, but it was playing around. He worked his butt off to get where he was and to do the things he did. But not any harder than anyone else.
And so reality continues its long unbeaten streak against trumped-up sentiment – not that Rudy Ruettiger minds, now that he's parlayed his 15 minutes into a steady career (http://www.rudyinternational.com/) as motivational speaker and "corporate trainer." I suppose anyone who's able to inspire and sell a bogus feel-good movie (http://www.sportshollywood.com/askrudy.html) about himself being a run-of-the-mill scrub is destined for success.

This is great.

In Reel Life: Rudy struggles to pay tuition at Holy Cross.

In Real Life: Rudy's tuition should have been paid under the GI Bill.In Reel Life: Like many people who have a single, concrete goal, Rudy sometimes comes off as being very self-absorbed.

In Real Life: Has he changed? Not long after the movie came out, the L.A. Times reported that he had seen the movie 26 times. And Newsday, after Rudy's 24th viewing, reported he "cries every time."
In Reel Life: The night before the final game, Steele leads the players as they walk, single file, into new Head Coach Dan Devine's office, and place their jerseys on his desk, saying they want Rudy to suit up.

In Real Life: According to the Houston Chronicle, Devine was furious about the scene. "The jersey scene is unforgivable. It's a lie and untrue. coming on the heels of 'Under the Tarnished Dome' (a book critical of the university's football program). I don't think it's a very good thing for Notre Dame."

And Ruettiger knew he would dress for the final home game. "Dan made the announcement that I'd be playing at practice and everybody cheered," he told the New York Times. Linebackers coach George Kelly added, "There's no question he was on the dress list. It was posted on Thursday."

The movie sucked and Joe Montana is a fucking dick.

Always has been, always will be. It pained me greatly when that fuck was traded to the Chiefs in '93.

And I'm always disappointed when SNL does their sports special and doesn't play the Montana skit from the 80s that was hilarious...

I don't "love" Manning.

But yes, I do hate Joe Montana.

I've hated him since before he won his first Super Bowl with the 49ers.

If there was ONE thing I hated about football in the 80's, it was Montana.

Not the USFL (LOVED THE USFL). Not Marino. Not Kelly. Not Esiason. Not even Elway.

But Montana?

Fuck that guy, forever.

I can't go into specifics tonight. Too much shit happening, so I'll leave you with this:

In the Information Age, where is Joe Montana?

Steve Young is at ESPN. Marino and Esiason are at CBS. Simms is at CBS AND Showtime.

Where is Joe Montana?

He didn't play in an era where QB's earned $19 million per year. He didn't play in an era where QB's earned $10 million per year. I don't even think he played in an era where QB's, especially journeymen, earned $2 million a year.

He retired more than 16 years ago. He has no endorsements, no commercial presence.

Why?

He's a dick. Plain and simple. EVERYONE knows it.

Once again, he proved it on the Dan Patrick Show.

Dane used to date Jennifer Montana...and Joe was always hanging around...and he hated him for it. Dane told Jennifer he would love her forever. And then Montana won a Super Bowl and Jennifer was gone like the wind.

Dane never forgave Joe.

When Joe came to Kansas City in the early 90s, Dane seethed with fury. He knew Joe liked to cheat on Jennifer with younger women, that Jennifer was getting older, and soon Joe would be coming after Dane's hot wife. After all, Dane had the hottest wife in all of the midwest. Who else would Joe go after?

It seemed inevitable.

Now, Dane made a lot of money, so Joe would have to be more than just Joe to steal Dane's wife. He would...you guessed it...have to win another Super Bowl, with the Chiefs. Dane's wife was a huge Chiefs fan. If she could dump Dane for the guy who brought Kansas City a Super Bowl, she would.

If Joe Montana took the Chiefs to the Super Bowl, and won, Dane would be single again.

Dane couldn't allow this to happen. He watched his wife cheer like mad when Joe beat the Steelers in the wild card round. He saw the lust in her eyes when Joe came from behind to beat the Oilers. The Chiefs went to Buffalo, and Dane knew he had to do something.

Something evil.

The night before the game, Dane snuck into the Chiefs' locker room, took ALL of the padding out of Joe's helmet, and replaced it with tissue paper. Then, using his secret Hollywood expense account, he paid off every member of the Chiefs offensive line.

Montana was as good as dead.

When Phil Hansen and Bruce Smith knocked Montana violently to the turf in Buffalo, his head smashing against the frozen astroturf, Dane's spirits lifted. Then he saw Joe brace his helmet with his hands and wince in pain, and he knew he had won. Dane smiled an evil smile. Nice try, Joe. Nice try.

Anyway, there may be something to what Dane is saying. I always got this "I'm too good for this shit" vibe from Montana. Seems like he rarely shows up at HOF ceremonies.

If Steve Bono went on the radio and said "the best restaurant in Kansas City is worse than the worst restaurant in San Francisco," Joe probably walked out on a $300 tab at Arthur Bryant's.

OH YEAH! And I heard a story about Montana at training camp...went up to some girls, smiled, drank their entire pitcher of beer and walked off. Forget who told me about it, but it was someone from here.

I don't think Joe is a dick as much as he just really struggles at communicating. Watching him try is downright painful. I think he may have issues with going from all the glamour to nothing but the bottom line is you just can't put him in front of a camera. He is like the Martha Stewart of QB's.

I heard a rumer once, after the Super Bowl played in Detroit. He wasn't apart of the Super Bowl MVPs that came out for the opening serimonies. Aparently Joe Montana feels like in some way that the 49ers org. & the NFL did something to piss him off. He feels like he gave his life to the NFL and doesn't owe it a thing. This is just a rumer and I'm probly not even passing it on right.

So what if he is a prick. He was damn good QB and won Championships. He couldn't win it for us so fuck him any ways. I love Joe Montana but I hate him at the same time, I'm still a big fan of his. I don't see why some one would hate him for not doing TV though it's his perogitive.

You still don't get it.

Dane hates Joe because he's a prick.

The fact that he hasn't been able to hack it on TV is evidence that he's a prick - no one wants to work with him.

By the way, your spelling is atrocious.

Just for arguments sake, is Jim Kelly a prick? I could be wrong, but I don't think he has any endorsements right now. He has a foundation for his son Hunter who passed away, but that's it.

I mean. Now we have to look at every (former) star athlete that isn't involved in T.V. or other endorsements, and ask if they are dicks.

That's great, but the only evidence he's given that he is a prick is that he isn't on T.V. or doing endorsements. Those might be symptoms of his prickery, but they hardly qualify as evidence. Dane seems to take it pretty personally and he said it goes back to the eighties. I am interested to know what personal beef he has with Joe.

As far as the appearance fee, if he didn't want to do it for free and the NFL was going to benefit from his celebrity, why shouldn't he require a fee for his appearance?

You don't comprehend Dane's point.

He's saying Joe isn't working in TV or doing ads because PEOPLE DON'T WANT TO WORK WITH HIM.

Why?

He's a douchenugget.

Montana actually had a brief stint with CBS Sports (or maybe NBC) after he retired. But he promptly disappeared and has NEVER been seen again as a TV analyst.

Wonder why?Because he sucked at that job. Plain and simple.

He's a dick and I hate him.

He's the least personable Super Bowl winning QB of all time, maybe the least personable NFL QB of all time.

The mere fact that a three time winning Super Bowl QB is peddling shoes for old people is indicative of the dick factor.

No one wants anything to do with him.

Joe Montana reminds me of the great baseball pitcher, Steve Carlton. Crazy as hell, pretty aloof, and somewhat reclusive.

From Carlton's biography...

Carlton had a unique relationship with the media. When he struggled early in his career, Carlton remembers the media portrayed him rather harshly. Carlton states, “I got slammed quite a bit. To pick up the paper and read about yourself getting slammed, that doesn’t start your day off right.” This negative view of the press led Carlton to refrain from speaking to the media from 1984 through the end of his career. Sports author Peter Golenbock summarized Carlton’s characteristic personality when he wrote, “Steve Carlton was not your normal guy. On the mound, he would tune out all distractions. Off the mound, he did the same. If he considered you the distraction, he’d direct at you an icy stare. Teammates considered him to be a recluse. He hated to sign autographs. He pissed people off with his stand-offishness and arrogance. One baseball writer wrote, "The two best pitchers in baseball this year don't speak English. One is Fernando Valenzuala, the other is Steve Carlton."

Carlton was also the finest left handed pitcher of his generation.”

Put Montana's name in place of Carlton's and you have the same player in different sports.

Although, in fairness, wasn't he the only one of the SB MVPs who didn't come out at SB XL because he wanted some kind of exorbitant fee?

Edit: He was one of three who didn't.

Like I said earlier I think Joe has a problem having gone from a supertar to nobody wanting him for anything. He thought there was going to be a big payday after football and that never materialized for him. Not only does he have zero communication ability he doesn't even understand how his actions are going to be perceived. That's not really surprising considering that is usually a package deal. The guy has done charity work and doesn't come across as having a big ego though. The only guy I really know from that team was Roger Craig and he said Joe was actually a really cool guy.

Any "true life" movie made by Hollywood will be full of historical inaccuracies. Sometimes they're almost completely fabricated (Memphis Belle, Pearl Harbor), sometimes they add characters to the story that never existed (like Michael Douglas's character in Ghost in the Darkness), or omit historical characters (there were three Chamberlain brothers in the 20th Maine, not two as depicted in Gettysburg). I could go on and on, but the point is Hollywood is looking for drama, and the truth is obviously not a top consideration.

If you want the truth, read a book.

I read Captain Dick Winters' book (person that Band of Brothers basically revolves around) and there is an interesting story about how he called Tom Hanks and told him off because of all the cussing done in the series. I read that and the book written by Buck Compton, wherein he angrily disputes BoB's portrayal of him suffering combat fatigue in Bastogne. (He also hated Nixon, which was an interesting aspect they left out of the mini-series.)

Winters was also pissed about the episode where it showed him wandering around Paris reliving the killing of the German sentry in Holland. He said nothing like that ever happened.

There are a few glaring factual errors in BoB. But, much like Gettysburg, it probably as close to historical accuracy as Hollywood's ever going to get.

You want to know what's amazing?

NFL Network did FOUR episodes of America's Game telling the tale of the 49ers 80s Super Bowl teams. The four teams that Montana played on.

They interviewed 12 different players or coaches, on camera, from those teams.

JOE MONTANA...the BEST PLAYER on those teams...was not interviewed.

Why not? From what I've heard, he requires HUGE appearance fees for everything he does.

He didn't even attend superbowl 40 when they had every MVP walk out before the game. Again, the reason I heard was because he wanted a huge appearance fee.

Not that it's true, because I have no idea, but Montana came out pretty strongly against that story that he wanted money to appear. He said one of his kids had a game that day and he told the NFL well in advance that he wouldn't be able to make it.

Terry Bradshaw, who also didn't appear, basically said the same thing, that he was spending time with his family. Bradshaw also wasn't interviewed for America's Game.

What that means, I don't know.

This was one of Dane's last great moments.

I cherish it.

Its the Catholic way

I doubt that sucking and then elevating underachievement is a huge part of "the Catholic way."

The movie sucked and Joe Montana is a ****ing dick.

Always has been, always will be. It pained me greatly when that **** was traded to the Chiefs in '93.

I have a hard time rooting for people I ****ing dislike, with a passion.

And Montana is one of those guys.

that's pretty funny coming from you

I'm watching the play and it's not even like he had to beat an o-lineman. It was just a fullback.
