Releases tomorrow (10/19). Here's an early review/preview.
Ok OK – I’ve been asked for some thoughts on the game so far. Here we go.
I’m still very early into the game (only about 12hrs – I’ve accomplished NOTHING!) but I’m back in Wasteland bliss. The enviroments still look as bleak, gritty and dirty as always (especially taking place in the Mojave Desert) yet still beautiful. I really don’t want to say too much to anyone but I will say that as of this moment, the player assumes the role of a Courier who gets shot and left for dead for one reason or another and you set out to find out who shot you and why.
For anyone wondering if this game is as big as Fallout 3, I can say with 100% certainty that it is…maybe even bigger. The gameplay is exactly the way it was before with some tweaks. One major change is the ability to play through “Hardcore Mode” which is offered once the user creates the player. Hardcore mode is crazy. Now Ammo carries weight, your player must stay hydrated, fed and rested otherwise, he/she will die or suffer serious consequences. I opted to play normally for my first kick at the can.
Another interesting change is the use of factions. Scattered throughout the Mojave Wasteland are factions of people whe the player can align themselves with or against. This will seriously impact where you can and can’t go without fear for retribution by said faction as well as the options and quests that open or close on you. Further to that, each faction has their own uniquie look and clothing style.
This also affects how different factions react to your pressence. So now with this knowledge, you’ll have to really pick and choose your fights and what armor/outfits you keep handy because they do carry weight as any armor will.
There are even a slew of different creatures and enemies to encounter and fight in the wastelands though I’m sure I haven’t seen all of them yet.
All in all Obsidian and Bethesda have done an amazing job. This is a sequel truely worthy of the Fallout brand. Expect a full review sometime on Tuesday. With only 2 more days to wait, I’m sure some of you are losing sleep with anticipation but rest well – You’ll need it for the long hours you’re sure to spend on this title.

New details from April's OMX.
The latest OXM has hit the stands and, just like PSM3 and PCGamer, they have an "exclusive" "world premier" of Fallout: New Vegas. Here are the details (scans after the jump):
•The Brotherhood of Steel is back, but the core story revolves around the NCR and Caesar's Legion.
•SPECIAL now has descriptions - eg CHA 10 = Cult Leader, EN 1 = Basically Dead.
•Those descriptions for Strength: 10 - Hercules' Bigger Cousin 9 - Doomsday Pecs 8 - Circus Strongman 7 - Beach Bully 6 - Barrel Chested 5 - Average Joe 4 - Lightweight 3 - Doughy Baby 2 - Beached Jellyfish 1 - Wet Noodle
•You get a Vault 21 jumpsuit from the doc who revives you, along with a pistol and a Pip Boy 3000.
•Weapons can be modified, but modifications only have positive results. The magazine implies you won't need to make a choice between different mods, because they won't be mutually exclusive.
•And a little later the magazine contradicts itself by writing that adding a larger magazine increases reload times.
•Every weapon has a special attack, not just the golf club. It seems that Fore! does not mean groin shots are back for every weapon.
•Guns have different knockback amounts, pistols don't do much, shotguns blast people away.
•There's a town-specific reputation, and Obsidian has 'hinted' that the reputation will impact endings.
•Karma has been overhauled, tracking the factions and ideologies that you agree with.
•Nightkin are back, as blue-skinned Super Mutants who've gone schizophrenic through Stealth Boy use. They attack you while cloaked, deactivating cloak at the last minute to hit you with a club.
•The Tabitha situation can also be resolved by convincing Tabitha to revolt against the other Super Mutants.
•Helios One is not only a power plant, but also the location of the controls of a solar weapon developed by Poseidon Energy which you can employ yourself.
•You can now choose the main character's age.

Sounds awesome. Hopefully its a little less buggy. Vehicles would be cool but I doubt it.

No vehicles, Buck. They tried a horse in Oblivion and it was completely useless.

If you've already spent hundreds of hours combing the wastelands of Washington D.C., Pittsburgh and Anchorage, Alaska in Fallout 3, what might convince you to revisit the post-nuclear version of Sin City in Fallout: New Vegas?
Developer Obsidian Entertainment is taking over for Bethesda Softworks for the follow-up to Fallout 3, set three years after the events of that game and thousands of miles westward, featuring an all-new cast of characters. What does Fallout: New Vegas have to offer the Vault dwelling veteran?
Specifically, for the serious Fallout fan, New Vegas introduces a Hardcore option from the get-go, allowing them to bypass early tutorials and live a more difficult post-nuclear life. Players opting to go hardcore will have to stave off hunger and dehydration, and will be required to visit doctors for more serious injuries. Hardcore also more harshly limits the amount of ammo one can carry, applying weight to bullets. Stimpacks won't heal instantly, but will heal over time.
Players can choose whether they want to go Hardcore during the game's opening, which doesn't begin in a Vault, but at the offices of New Vegas' medicine man Doc Mitchell. He'll patch you right up after your whole "I've got a bullet in my head" ordeal that starts off the next Fallout. Yes, finding out who was trying to blow your brains clean out and why they left you for dead will play some part in the story of Fallout: New Vegas.
Doc Mitchell will fix your face up the way you like and, through a series of tests, help you determine your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. abilities (Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, Luck). He'll set you up with a Pip Boy 3000 and get you on your way.
Obsidian's new take on Fallout introduces a few other changes, starting with the Companion Wheel. The pop-up radial menu lets players control their allies in battle, issuing simple command behaviors to AI-controlled compatriots.
The VATS combat system has also been tweaked, allowing for melee attack commands. Just don't expect a massive difference in the way the successful targeting system worked in Fallout 3. But do expect a greater variety of weapons, thanks to new weapon mods that let players customize their firearms with larger clips, scopes and specialized ammo. More outlandish weapons like the grenade machine gun and golf club will also add a little variety to your post-nuclear excursions.
During your journey across the desert lands of Fallout: New Vegas, you'll have to deal with the various factions who claim ownership of certain territories, like the New California Republic, the Brotherhood of Steel and Caesar's Legion. The notoriety system complements the karma system of Fallout 3. Depending on the actions you take—who you kill and who you befriend—various groups will either want you dead, want to be your best bud or attempt to pay tribute to your character.
We'll have extended impressions of Fallout: New Vegas early next week, from the outskirts at Primm to details on what awaits you on The Strip, so keep an eye peeled for further details. If you have any specific questions you want answered, let us know.

The horse in oblivion was useless? Hell no. Got me where I wanted to go faster and helped me escape some sticky situations, too. There was a great mod to make it gallop faster, too.
Plus it was fun when it died going down to steep a hill and I had to resurrect it.

I didn't use the horse much.... was too busy building up my jumping/etc. stats.
First look from IGN.
Best part.... "You can now aim down the sights like most standard first-person shooters".
Apparently it's scheduled for a Q3 2010 release, but I'd be shocked if the game ships before October/November.

I didn't need much to be interested.
Improved game play and a new story is all it was going to take.
I dont think a vehicle would be useless.
Lets say you want to just go discovering locations, then you hop on a motorcycle and find them at 5 times the rate you can on foot.

Sure, but it'd change the whole dynamic of the game. You'd be able to easily escape from most enemies and it'd make the vast wasteland seem much smaller.

Fallout 3 GOTY is a must-buy. The others were reputedly great back in the day but are probably pretty badly dated.

Sort of. Broadly-speaking, Borderlands is an FPS with RPG elements, Fallout 3 is an RPG with shooter elements. There's no comparison story-wise, however.

If you haven't played Fallout or Fallout 2, do so immediately.
The games aren't "aged" because they were always so different from all the other games. While most were playing Duke Nukem and Command and Conquer (FPS and strategy games), Fallout was unabashedly turn-based and focused strongly on humor and nuances. Simply put, Fallout and Fallout 2 are still immensely playable, and will remain so, because it was never about the graphics for them.

There are about 2200 speaking characters to encounter in this game, the producer said, and all but one of them can be killed — and will stay dead — if you choose to be such a brute.
Excellent.
So there is only one kid in the entire game?
Wallcrawler
09-26-2010, 01:18 AM
The little lamplight kids in FO3 were annoying as shit anyway. They didnt really serve any purpose either, other than being annoying as shit.
That whole entire segment of the storyline in dealing with the lamplighters was the low point of the game for me. You either have to waste a perk slot so the kids will help you advance the story, or you have to keep reloading until you pass these ridiculous speech checks to get the items you need from them.
It also wasnt believable that a colony of children could even begin to think about surviving in a world like that, so it drew attention to itself in a bad way.

I loved both of them, but for me both of them get to a critical mass point where you just get tired of it. I picked up Shivering Isles and got about a third of the way through it before I quit.
Fallout was a much better game, though. The best part about Oblivion for me was the guild quests - particularly the assassin guild.

I really enjoy the character building aspect of games like this - that keeps me going even after stuff gets too repetitive. I like to max out everything and then go destroying until I get tired of it.

I think my favorite part of fallout 3 was the character creation sequence. That to me was a really innovative and entertaining thing. Unfortunately there wasn't anything else in the rest of the game that drew me in as much.
I was enthralled with Fallout 3 before I hit max level. I loved it everytime I gained XP. Once I hit 20 I just did the main mission and haven't played again.
This time I'll probably up the difficulty so it takes me longer to get to 20 or wherever they set the max level. Hopefully at least 30.

Lamest thing ever is when I bought the GOTY edition and got to about a Level 5 and was walking around the wasteland and I came across a downed alien ship and I thought that it was the one where you get a super weapon, but it turned out to be the alien spaceship. It took forever and wasn't even that fun. I haven't even played since I beat it. I still need to do those other DLC missions.

Here are some shots from the launch party at the Palms. Wayne Newton was there, which was pretty surreal. He looked, in a word, wax-y/plastic.
Brief thoughts from playing the game for 5-7 minutes. The graphics and FPS mechanics are somewhat improved, but it's more Fallout 3.5 than anything else. Will still buy it, though.

If you were thinking they were gonna make a new, polished Fallout you're gonna be disappointed. All the jank is still there. It's basically Fallout 3 with new locations and new weapons (some of which are very cool.) There are some minor additions like factions that can like/dislike you, books that will add points to skills for a limited amount of time, a new companion interface, etc.

Really? Hopefully the exclusive DLC will be fucking brahmin armour for all the silly people that are avoiding this game because of this.
If the content is worth a damn, just wait for the GOTY edition which always includes ALL the DLC for a lower price..
Also, it's only for the FIRST DLC.. that is all that is mentioned. This isn't the first time they've done this; it'll be available for all in a few months.
Shit, why do they keep doing that? I bought it for PS3.
It will be available eventually right?
P.S. I've started a new game on 360 (Fallout 3) and just made my guy super intelligent and perceptive. Its cool having a Speech check of 100% everytime, lol. I'm only on level 9 now and I've been doing some stuff in the Northwest portion of the map. Needless to say, I am scared shitless knowing that any second I could run into a Deathclaw. It hasn't happened yet, but I'm not looking forward to it.
Speaking of Deathclaws, I just was reading a thing about Fallout NV's Deathclaw Mothers. Apparently these were in Fallout and Fallout 2, but I never played those.
"Matriarchs of the Deathclaw broods, mother deathclaws are bigger, stronger, and more easily angered than your run-of-the-mill Deathclaw. They usually trawl dark areas near their pups or eggs, and are more than eager to tear apart pretty much anything that the wastelands throw at their babies."
Yes, you read that right, they are even more vicious than your normal Deathclaw.

I don't think you'll see that many deathclaws at level 9 but keep a few bottlecap mines on you just to be on the safe side.
My first playthrough I was just doing a bit of exploring and found myself in a Deathclaw sanctuary. Used two stealthboys to get outta that one.

Well, my first experience with this game wasn't positive. I was still up, and GameStop is only a couple of miles away, so I went and picked the game up at midnight. I wasn't planning on playing it (well, not much), just getting everything set up so I'd be ready to go tonight. Well, apparently the Steam cocksuckers think Illinois is located on an island in the pacific somewhere, because I was unable to install the game because "it hadn't been released yet." When I sent a message to customer service, it was time-stamped 9:30 p.m. on the 18th instead of 12:30 a.m. on the 19th, and even though I then altered my time settings, it didn't matter. Idiots. :shake:
Hopefully I'll enjoy the game more than I do dealing with Steam's Draconian horseshit.

Companions I've found:
Ed-E: In the Mohave Express building in Primm. It's the robot sitting on the front desk.
Boone: Sniper in the dinosaur's mouth during the night in Novac. Have to do a mission for him.
I've heard about a couple others but can't find them.

I'm really enjoying this game. They've tweaked some of the skills and added a new ammo modification ability (sort reminds me of the little differences between KOTOR and KOTOR 2), but other than that it plays exactly the same.
And as annoyed as a certain football team has made me over past couple of weeks, this is a welcome diversion.

Gamespy has an article entitled "Fallout: New Vegas Bugs Transforming the Wasteland into Oddworld" but ironically if you follow the link you get a 404 error. LMAO
The rest of their description reads as follows:Fallout: New Vegas is swarming with bugs -- and we're not talking about the mutated insects you'll find in the wastelands. As gamers with fresh copies of the anticipated game are discovering, Bethesda and Obsidian's latest post-apocalyptic adventure is packed with programming flaws
I haven't really encountered any Bugs, but I have crashed twice in about 6 hours of gameplay. Its annoying. I even turned off the game for good when I had 4 good hours left in me last night and I got to sleep at a reasonable time.

So I still have the saves, but I don't have to rifle through them.

You can do that on PS3, but it'd be a pain in the ass (saving to USB thumb drive).
I had my first "BIG" decision to make last night. There were 2 quests I had, where if I did one, I couldn't do the other, and vice versa. After about 10 minutes of going back and forth I just went with one and said I'd do the other one on my next run through.

FO3 is one of the best RPG games ever made... and also one of the largest in terms of both scale and content. That said, it is also single-player only, and definitely not a "fast-twitch" shooter like CoD. I know a lot of people who HATE FO3 and games like it (Mass Effect, KOTOR, Dragon Age, etc.); not so much for the game itself but rather the gameplay and genre. Keep that in mind when deciding between the two.
I absolutely LOVED Mass Effect 1 and 2 (my top 5 of all time). I loved KOTOR and enjoyed DA:O quite a bit. FO3, on the other hand, was 'meh' at best. I beat it just to beat it and sold it. I honestly enjoyed Oblivion more than I did FO3 but even that game was pretty underwhelming. At least the story was a lot more interesting and intriguing. I think I'm one of the 2 people who didn't like FO3 all that much, lol.

From that I would say you like the genre and are particularly impressed with BioWare's titles. I can empathize; I too find BioWare games to be excellent, but different than Bethesda's. The latter's titles are definitely "grittier" and slower-paced.

Well, I like a lot of other RPGs as well, I was just commenting on the games you listed. I think The Witcher is probably one of the best RPGs in recent history, def. better than DA:O. My biggest problem with Bethesda games is low level and gear caps. I did like the combat system in FO3, but it wasn't enough. Blowing limbs off is only cool for so long before it gets old and tired.

There's no meat to bethesda games. If the story isn't there, I eventually get bored with the combat and game mechanics. And for me they have zero replay value, whereas with the BioWare games, I usually play each of them a number of times, whether it's KotOR or Jade Empire or Mass Effect or Dragon Age. I know some people love open world sandbox games, but I eventually just get bored with wandering around.
That's not to say I dislike the bethesda games. Because I don't. I've played Morrowind and Oblivion and Fallout 3 and will eventually get New Vegas. But they're just one-and-dones, and not a something I'm likely to load in five years (like KotOR, which I'm playing right now as preparation for TOR).

Can you discuss the setting for Dead Money?
Dead Money is set in the Sierra Madre, an opulent and extravagant resort that was supposed to be the greatest casino in the west – except that it never opened. Bombs fell before the gala opening, and the Sierra Madre froze in time, its state of the art security system locking the place up tight. Nothing could get in, and none of the guests could escape. Years passed. The climate control and air conditioning system within the facility began to spit toxins into the surrounding city, causing a slow cloud and haze to form over the area - which proved lethal to anyone who tried to explore the city. Only a mysterious group called the Ghost People survived to call the city home, trapped inside what appeared to be hazmat suits and never speaking to their victims... only capturing them alive and dragging them away to the depths of the city deep within the Cloud.
And so the Sierra Madre faded from the history books, only occasionally being seen in posters across the wastes, until it took on mythic ghost story status... a supposed "City of Gold" in the Mojave Wasteland where all the treasures of the Old World were rumored to be held. It was kept alive as a late-night saloon story by prospectors who'd claimed to have found maps leading there... and were willing to part with the "map" for a few caps. Or a drink. Or a warm place to sleep.
How will the player reach this area?
The Sierra Madre is a mythical place in the wastes, with travelers all risking their lives to find it. Only one man truly "found" it - and lived. After the fall of HELIOS One, Father Elijah of the Brotherhood of Steel set out to find new weapons to eradicate NCR. And in the process he found the Sierra Madre. The Courier is lured to the Sierra Madre by a faint radio broadcast advertising the gala grand opening.
From a gameplay standpoint, Dead Money is accessed by loading a save file from any point in Fallout: New Vegas prior to the endgame sequence, in the same way as Operation Anchorage, Point Lookout, The Pitt or Mothership Zeta were triggered in Fallout 3.
Can you share details on some of the new creatures/enemies players will encounter?
This being an extension of Fallout: New Vegas, players will encounter several unique characters, each with their own motivations, all of whom will have to work together if any of them are going to survive. Aside from just struggling with their would-be companions, the courier will also have to deal with the mysterious Ghost People as well as the casino's substantial defense systems.

Finally got around to playing Dead Money... it's challenging. Much more challenging than any DLC they're released before. You're tied to three other characters, and if they die, you die. There are speakers that interfere with your slave collar and can go off, killing you. There are booby traps all over the place. There are baddies that if you don't dismember them, they get back up and keep going after you. There are holograms in buildings that can't be killed, you have to find their emitter and turn 'em off.
I'm only an hour or so in, but so far it's good. It certainly makes the game challenging, even if you're at a level 28 (where I am).

Dead Money was interesting...but ultimately WAY TOO FUCKING BORING AND ANNOYING to be worth it. And the climax fucking sucked. SUCKED.
I'll give it this - it was the most challenging Fallout-related content I've played. And it had a great story. But the best DLC, BY FAR, remains Lookout Point.
Anyway, I've finished the main questline in New Vegas, but I've gone back to an earlier save so I can finish exploring the map.

Oh, I'm up in the mid-20s. When it comes to games like this I'm definitely a completionist - I explore everything, look in every nook and cranny for stuff and wander around gaining extra experience. Well, for instance - I started the game originally and tried to build up a little bit of everything....then as I progressed through the game, I kept running into locked doors/safes/etc - so then I started building up lock pick.
But, as I started it again this time (new game), I have been building up guns, lock pick, science & speech. None are all that high at this point (30-40's), but just curious if there is one that is more important than the others that I should be building up - or if there is one that will help me more as I get into the game further than others.

I prefer lockpicking, as it's pretty easy to f up the terminal password checks.
Other good skills are speech (if you want to avoid some conflicts), repair, and energy weapons.

Well you're definitely not going to want to level up each skill as you progress. I'm a sneaky gunman so my unarmed, energy, and explosive skills are all still at default (15).

I've stuck with guns, particularly one-handed, although I also pack a 5.56 carbine (not unlike the one I own in real life, which is kind of cool) and a sniper rifle. I haven't put any points into energy weapons at all, and just sell the ones I pick up.
As you advance, better and better weapons become available regardless of your speciality. The 12.7 mm pistol and SMG are pretty kick ass.
Also, be careful giving weapons to your idiot-assed followers - just like in the previous game, they'll drop weapons and you won't realize it. I lost a fucking carbine that I paid 7,000 cap for because the bitch just left it somewhere. Biggest, dumbest flaw in the game that they really should fix.

As for the DLCs, I really liked Old World Blues, enjoyed Honest Hearts, and was really annoyed by Dead Money - in the end, the pain in the ass factor overrode the fun factor, which sort of defeats the purpose of playing. I don't know if I'll never play this again, but if I do I doubt if I'll bother with that one again. I was able to get all the gold bars out, but only ended up selling four or five of them. Big whoop.

Overall, great game. I like it a lot better than Fallout 3.
Old World Blues was quite good, and Honest Hearts was OK. I kinda liked Dead Money just for how challenging it was, but like you, I doubt I'd play it again.

Even though the contents of Honest Hearts wasn't great, the scenery was awesome. I love that part of the country.
I also think Dead Money wouldn't have sucked so much if my character had had better unarmed/melee skills, which I generally put almost no points into because the unarmed/melee fighting in the Fallout games basically sucks - you should be able to aim for specific body parts in VATS but it won't let you. The things you had to kill and then chop up were extra annoying because I'd have to keep switch weapons unless I got a lucky head shot. Especially if there were several of them.

Ha, pretty cool. But it just lends more facts to my thoery that people have entirely too much time on their hands (as I sit here on my ass typing on a BB).

You think that's bad? Do a youtube search, seems to be many people that have built pipboys. They won't help during the zombie apocalypse though. ;)

So I just finished Fallout 3 & really enjoyed it. Reading through a few of these posts, it seems like New Vegas is a better game and most reviews seem to be positive.
Anyone wanna give me a quick rundown of what's new & whatnot (I read the article in the OP)? Thinking about picking this up to keep me occupied until I can find a used Madden game or NHL comes out.

I liked Fallout 3 better, the plot was better and it was pretty much the 1st in the series.

Playing through this again, finally at long last embracing Harcore mode. Damn, what a difference it makes - certainly changes the way you develop your character and go through the game. I like the extra stuff you have to do to maintain health. Toughest thing I've encountered so far is the cadazor - like they weren't nasty enough in normal mode, now they're like flying poisonous chainsaws. Fuck. Hope I get a few more levels before I run into my first deathclaw.
Fuck those Cazadors. I think they are harder to get through than deatclaws. At least with deathclaws you can isolate them and take them out 1 at a time.

I been playin it lately. been makin money at the casino's riding $200 on 20 and making bank on it. Been banned from 3 casinos already from hitting the jackpot a few times in a row. I would leave with 18,000 in caps lol. I notice each casino has a different payout with house odds in mind.

Gobi rifle plus 'Steady' FTW. I loved picking them off in that Mill's Canyon.

Is the DLC worth it? I don't like the ones that create a whole new area like Pitt or Anchorage.

Finished Honest Hearts a couple days ago.
The worst fucking DLC I've ever played. Boring as shit other than the interesting landscape. The burned man was an interesting character that they totally dropped the ball on.
And FYI, hell yeah I went on a jihad with that guy at the end. Die, white legs!

I'm still playing on Hardcore - up to level 40 and it's still a bitch. You really can't drop your guard at all. ALthough I've got my unarmed up to the point where I can kill normal adversaries in sneak mode with one punch from the "Pushy" power fist. They fly through the air dead, too, which is kind of cool.
The only DLC I've played so far is Big MT (whatever it's actually called). I'll probably do Honest Hearts next, didn't bother me as much as others. Don't know if I'll even bother with Sierra Madre - as annoying as that was in normal mode, hardcore might make me line up the computer next to the refrigerator.

Sierra Madre had a pretty cool storyline. I wouldn't want to play it again.

It's not as bad the second time around. The first time I had a character with very low melee/unarmed skills and no perks for either, and that is a major disadvantage. The second time I had the rights skills and knew what I was up against. I may give it a shot on hardcore, but I'll damn sure save right before I go in.
I also need to download the latest one so I can get the extra five levels.

While I've been playing in hardcore, the one weapon I've had the most success with is a regular laser rifle (modded with the scope and beam splitter). tri-beam lasers burn through ammo too fast, plasma rifles don't have a scope or a decent rate of fire, and the Gauss rifle burns five rounds per shot and is extremely slow. In hardcore the weight of food and ammo count, so you really have to pick efficient multi-use weapons. I also have a perk that makes things I kill with energy weapon blow up in a plasma explosion, damaging other creatures around it. That's useful. Although not recommended at close range. Grenade launcher is fun but too slow.
I like the sniper rifle as well, but it just doesn't seem to pack the punch that it does in normal mode. The 12.7mm machine gun is a good choice for a standard weapon. The .556 and 5mm stuff seems useless in hardcore mode.

Finally got around to playing this on my new PC -- I've modded it pretty good with new textures and Nevada Skies (adds tons of weather effects including sandstorms, new skies, and blacker nights).

Holy shit this game had the chance to be great. The bugs on the PS3 GOTY edition make it unplayable at times after you hit 50+ hours. Still worth the $15 tho. Wish they would have remastered this instead of Skyrim
