Where is the best place to get a tattoo done in Kansas City?

I have never had a tattoo, and I want it to be as good as possible. I have seen some crappy tattoos, and I definitely don't want crap.

I have looked online, and I have liked the artwork I saw at www.mercyseattattoo.com (http://www.mercyseattattoo.com/portfolio.html)

Please clue me in.

Thanks

search for Irezumi.

I have many friends that have recommended this place. I also know a few of the artists and they're all first class guys.

Ask for "Tattoo Steve" or Steve Drew, same dude. He's a disc golf buddy that does some nice ink work.

I doubt they would still be considered the best, but back in the day Grimms on Main St was it. When I say back in the day, I mean back before ink got popular in the 90's. Wes has to be pushing 50 by now and he's a second generation artist.

Somewhere in LA, two people are talking about the lack of decent tattoo parlors in KC. "There's a few pretenders, but nothing quality," they say, while dining on cooked meat dipped in sauce.

I was just about to throw your name out here wutamess if it wasn't already mentioned.

Don't like that clown tattoo though. If I ever get shit faced and wake up with one of them someone is getting a Gorilla Glue enema.

Irezumi is always good. Mercy Seat by the KC Star building are disciples of Irezumi. Whispering Danny at Exile for old school or Sean the African at Freaks. Kingpin on Noland. If you want the best though, seek out Brad Franzen of Triple Crown Tattoos. PM me for the contact.

Shouldn't there be a mall for this kind of thing. One stop shopiing. Strip club, message parlor, sports bar, tattoo hut, barbershop, BBQ accessories, gun and tackle.

What does the average tattoo cost? I know that sleeves, etc. are very expensive, so I am talking about an average size tattoo.

If I am paying $120 an hour, am I getting ripped off?

The $100/hr. is the typical rate, but there are artists that can charge a lot more. The key word being can.

OK, for those of you that have tattoos, I need to ask an etiquette question.

My tattoo artist drew up a tattoo based on the information I gave him. I like everything about it, except one part. I want to change that one part, but I do not want to offend him. Should I expect to be able to make changes?

it's your tattoo. He should understand that it's going on your body forever.

I had something similar and there was no offense taken when I had a couple of minor changes.

Well, I wanted a KU related tattoo, I wanted a Jayhawk that had some personality, and I wanted a crest because I am Scottish (yes, I know crests are not exclusive to the Scots) and he designed a great tattoo, except the Jayhawk looks like a cardinal, and just looks like crap.

I definitely can't get his version tattooed on my skin, but I do not want to piss him off.

And I would be happy to relate why I needed a Jayhawk related tattoo, if anyone wants to know.

No offense but it's pretty good coloring in the beak but the body detail/coloring leaves something to be desired.

I'm not into tattoos at all, but if the guy can't copy something that he has on paper in front of him, that's a terrible sign. Find someone else entirely.

It's your body, don't let this guy put something on it you don't love. Only one of you has to live with it forever. Ask him to fix it. If he can't or won't you need to go to someone else.

Artists and consumers don't always see eye to eye. If this guy has been in the business he knows that.

She is booked 6 months out.

Wow, I'm not into tatoos at all but am impressed. $100 an hour works out to like $200K per year for a 40 hr week. Being booked 6 months in advance infers that she could work that much or more. I'd work 3000 hours per year if I could reliably pull that much an hour.

More than likely that is split with the shop owner. Some artists rent their space and some do a 50/50, 60/40 split with the owner. Still it can be an extemely good living.

I rent flat out at $150/week for a booth.
Business is good and getting better as I'm honing my craft.
I'm not longer intimidated by people who already have great work on them as my work is as good if not better after they're finished with their session.

I'm aiming to be one of the best in the metro.
I'm getting there slowly but surely.

Her and my cousin are 2 of the best in KC IMHO... He's getting work done by her shortly as he booked months ago. Getting a big portrait of his son.

Also... There's a big tattoo convention coming up this weekend you could see almost all of the artist in one place.

Jessie did the portrait of my old man for me. I think she did a fantastic job, I've been to her 3 times and have always been happy with the work. She is not only a talented artist, but also very pleasant to deal with, and really pretty(not that that matters, but she really is).

Hell yes it is! In reality my parrot is beautiful. I showed the artist a pic of him and told them I wanted a crazy ass cartoon psycho looking parrot and they came up with this. I think it is quite demented and love it.

You'd want to tattoo in NYC. Paul Booth has a 2 year waiting list, and this guy charges $1,000 for the first hour:

He’s so busy with commercial ventures (like designing ads for Camel cigarettes, for example) that he only lays ink on the weekends, but it’s still worth the three-month wait for Scott Campbell. His knowledge of what he calls “antique ornamentation and specialized typography”—as well as old-school classics like swallows, anchors, sailing ships—is exhaustive, which is why his Williamsburg studio, Saved Tattoo, pulls in clients like Marc Jacobs, Josh Hartnett, Heath Ledger, and Helena Christensen. The price is steep ($1,000 for the first hour, $200 each hour thereafter), but it’s worth the investment to brandish one of Campbell’s works on your skin forever (3 Hope St., nr. Roebling St., Williamsburg, Brooklyn; 718-486-0850).
