Dr. Donda West, the mother of hip-hop superstar Kanye West, who nurtured and promoted her son’s musical career from its infancy, died Saturday in a Los Angeles hospital. She was 58.

Beyond her son’s international fame, Dr. West had carved out her own niche as a well-respected educator in Chicago — long affiliated with Chicago State University where she rose to the chairmanship of the school’s English department.

She left the school in 2004 as her son’s musical career exploded — leading to a series of various endorsement opportunities and other marketing and licensing agreements. Dr. West became the CEO of Super Good, the parent company of Kanye West Enterprises, and moved to California two years ago. In recent months she was heading West’s foundation, which aimed to keep kids from dropping out of school.

Kanye West, who was just in Chicago last week filming a music video for his song ‘‘Homecoming,’’ had just arrived in London when he learned of his mother’s death Saturday. He immediately flew to Los Angeles to join fellow family members.

The entertainer never hid the fact that he and his mother were unusually close — both personally and professionally, telling the Sun-Times in 2005, ‘‘I never make any important decision without consulting her.’’

Usually a popular member of Kanye West’s entourage at all the major music awards shows, such as the Grammys, Dr. West most recently grabbed headlines last spring with the publication of a memoirs, Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar, co-authored with Karen Hunter.

In the book, Dr. West focused on raising her talented son as a single mother in the African-American community — eventually becoming his manager as he gained national attention as a new musical sensation.

In the early period of West’s career, Dr. West herself was known to call local Chicago radio and television stations in order to promote her son — persistently attempting to get Kanye booked for live or taped appearances.

In recent years, Kanye West also made headlines for his comments on homosexuality, his addiction to pornography, his supposed feud with rap superstar 50 Cent and his posing as Jesus Christ with a crown of thorns on his head on a cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

Earlier this year, Dr. West told Sun-Times columnist Stella Foster, ‘‘I don’t see anything wrong with what Kanye said. And I don’t see the controversy. He is telling how he feels and he is speaking the truth as he sees it.’’

Always quick to stand behind her son, Dr. West told Foster, ‘‘I support my baby.’’

Apparently from complications from tummy tuck surgery.

See the curtains hangin' in the window, in the evenin' on a Friday night.
A little light a-shinin' through the window, lets me know everything is alright.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

See the paper layin' in the sidewalk, a little music from the house next door.
So I walked on up to the doorstep, through the screen and across the floor.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

Sweet days of summer, the jasmine's in bloom. July is dressed up and playing her tune.
And I come home from a hard day's work, and you're waiting there, not a care in the world.
See the smile a-waitin' in the kitchen, food cookin' and the plates for two.
See the arms that reach out to hold me, in the evening when the day is through.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

Very sad.

Kanye West loved his mother dearly...

"Hey Mama"

[Chorus]
(Hey Mama), I wanna scream so loud for you, cuz I'm so proud of you
Let me tell you what I'm about to do, (Hey Mama)
I know I act a fool but, I promise you I'm goin back to school
I appreciate what you allowed for me
I just want you to be proud of me (Hey Mama)

[Verse 1]
I wanna tell the whole world about a friend of mine
This little light of mine and I'm finna let it shine
I'm finna take yall back to them better times
I'm finna talk about my mama if yall don't mind
I was three years old, when you and I moved to the Chi
Late December, harsh winter gave me a cold
You fixed me up something that was good for my soul
Famous homemade chicken soup, can I have another bowl?
You work late nights just to keep on the lights
Mommy got me training wheels so I could keep on my bike
And you would give anything in this world
Michael Jackson leather and a glove, but didn't give me a curl
And you never put no man over me
And I love you for that mommy cant you see?
Seven years old, caught you with tears in your eyes
Cuz a ***** cheatin, telling you lies, then I started to cry
As we knelt on the kitchen floor
I said mommy Imma love you till you don't hurt no more
And when I'm older, you aint gotta work no more
And Imma get you that mansion that we couldn't afford
See you're, unbreakable, unmistakable
Highly capable, lady that's makin loot
A livin legend too, just look at what heaven do
Send us an angel, and I thank you (Hey Mama)

[Chorus]

[Verse 2]
Forrest Gump mama said, life is like a box of chocolates
My mama told me go to school, get your doctorate
Somethin to fall back on, you could profit with
But still supported me when I did the opposite
Now I feel like it's things I gotta get
Things I gotta do, just to prove to you
You was getting through, can the choir please
Give me a verse of "You, Are So Beautiful To Me"
Can't you see, you're like a book of poetry
Maya Angelou, Nicky Giovanni, turn one page and there's my mommy
Come on mommy just dance wit me, let the whole world see your dancing feet
Now when I say Hey, yall say Mama, now everybody answer me (Hey Mama)

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
I guess it also depends tho, if my ends low
Second they get up you gon get that Benzo
Tint the windows, ride around the city and let ya friends know (Hey Mama)

[Verse 3]
Tell your job you gotta fake em out
Since you brought me in this world, let me take you out
To a restaurant, upper echelon
Imma get you a jag, whatever else you want
Just tell me what kind of S-Type Donda West like?
Tell me the perfect color so I make it just right
It don't gotta be Mother's Day, or your birthday
For me to just call and say (Hey Mama)

Uhhhh... Kanye's not "hood" at all. The dominant theme in all of his work is being a middle class black man going to college, hence the titles of the ablums. That's what has set him apart from everyone else: his self-deprecating treatment of his background and lifestyle.

[Chorus - 4x]
Oh when it all, it all falls down
I'm telling you ohh, it all falls down

[Verse - Kanye West]
Man I promise, she's so self conscious
She has no idea what she's doing in college
That major that she majored in don't make no money
But she won't drop out, her parents will look at her funny
Now, tell me that ain't insecurrre
The concept of school seems so securrre
Sophmore three yearrrs aint picked a careerrr
She like **** it, I'll just stay down herre and do hair
Cause that's enough money to buy her a few pairs of new Airs
Cause her baby daddy don't really care
She's so precious with the peer pressure
Couldn't afford a car so she named her daughter Alexus (a Lexus)
She had hair so long that it looked like weave
Then she cut it all off now she look like Eve
And she be dealing with some issues that you can't believe
Single black female addicted to retail and well

[Chorus - repeat 2x (w/ Kanye ad-libs)]

[Verse - Kanye West]
Man I promise, I'm so self conscious
That's why you always see me with at least one of my watches
Rollies and Pasha's done drove me crazy
I can't even pronounce nothing, pass that versace!
Then I spent 400 bucks on this
Just to be like ***** you ain't up on this!
And I can't even go to the grocery store
Without some ones thats clean and a shirt with a team
It seems we living the american dream
But the people highest up got the lowest self esteem
The prettiest people do the ugliest things
For the road to riches and diamond rings
We shine because they hate us, floss cause they degrade us
We trying to buy back our 40 acres
And for that paper, look how low we a'stoop
Even if you in a Benz, you still a ***** in a coop/coupe

[Chorus - repeat 2x (w/ Kanye ad-libs)]

[Verse - Kanye West]
I say **** the police, thats how I treat em
We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom
We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em
Things we buy to cover up what's inside
Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth
That's why shortys hollering "where the ballas' at?"
Drug dealer buy Jordans, crackhead buy crack
And a white man get paid off of all of that
But I ain't even gon act holier than thou
Cause **** it, I went to Jacob with 25 thou
Before I had a house and I'd do it again
Cause I wanna be on 106 and Park pushing a Benz
I wanna act ballerific like it's all terrific
I got a couple past due bills, I won't get specific
I got a problem with spending before I get it
We all self conscious I'm just the first to admit it

Its' all an act. Dude grew up in the suburbs but now he's "hood". He is the biggest tool in hollywood.
Actually a lot of his songs mention just that...how he did grow up in the suburbs and didnt grow up in the hood. :hmmm:

Edit: New Phin beat me to it.

Never could understand why so many people hate him because of this. Just seems like an emotional outburst from someone who has alot of compassion for the less fortunate. I also think that if he just would have substituted the word "poor" for the word "black", then he would have hit the nail right on the head, and had more people siding with him, even though you should be able to tell that's what it means anyway. IMO

I don't hate the guy at all. He's completely irrelevant to me. I couldn't begin to identify any of his music and wouldn't know him if he passed me on the street with his posse in tow (assuming he has a posse).
