Alright boys im looking at a 78 ford ranger xlt camper special. It has all the bells and whistles & shes a straight truck, but the motor is high miles.
So id like to hear the pros & CONS about this series of bigblock.
How much to replace or rebuild this motor?
What kind of exhaust system will work best IYO?
NO BULLSHITERS im looking at this one to replace my old girl who got knocked in the head acouple weeks ago.

What motor is in it?
edit: duh.
You want to know how much to do a complete ReBuild? You want to tear it down to the block, get the heads worked on, sleaves and all?

Which engine does it have now? Is it half or 3/4 ton? 4x4 or two wheel drive?

It depends a lot on the condition of the engine now. I take it you are talking about a complete rebuild and not just top end?

If you have the block done and a complete rebuild, and not just the top end, it'll be more than $300.....I'd guess closer to 5 depending on what you have done.
You might get a better deal buying a low mile Used motor from a Salvage yard or on the Net.

I would also try to stick with what's in there for an engine as well or you may find yourself swapping around a few parts. It's not that bad, but it is just one extra pain in the ass.

If you go to one of the bigger yards that are "on the Network", even if they don't have your part/motor......they can search their network, and find listings for all Motors that meet your criteria, and you can buy the motor from That place, and have it shipped.

I think I would. That is always something you can throw on later.
Oh, one other tip: When you start calling these parts boys, make sure when you first get on say something like "Hi this is Al from Mo's garage." If they think you own, or work at a shop two things are likely to happen. You will get a better deal on the engine and they are not likely to send you some pile of crap. :thumb:

So 2.75 or 3 for the pipe on a single?

I would just go with what is on there now and call it good. If you pulled heavy loads up mountain roads on a regular basis, I would go all out, but if not, I wouldn't worry to much about it.

One other place I would check is here: http://www.cartalk.com/
You can post a bunch of questions and run a search on anything auto. I have spent a lot of time there over the years.
