Quite the operation the Lambs are running,

From today's Chris Mortensen column on ESPN Insider:

Family Feud

There have been a lot of bizarre stories emerging from the football complex of the St. Louis Rams.

One of them involved Rams tackle Kyle Turley who was questioned recently by NFL security for allegedly threatening to kill or harm Rams coach Mike Martz, according to sources connected to the team, league and player.

Turley has been on injured reserve since August, after he ruptured disk in his back. Sources say Turley did assign some blame to Martz for pressuring him into practicing with a bulging disk that ruptured two days later.

Recently, in a rather sarcastic tone, Martz told St. Louis media that he had not seen Turley all season, had no idea where he was, and that he did not know whether Turley wanted to continue his career.

Turley was watching TV in St. Louis when he heard about Martz's remarks. He drove to the Rams complex and demanded to see the coach.

In Martz's office Turley complained about being the object of Martz's public indignation and said he had kept the front office informed of his physical rehabilitation. Sources say Turley became angry when Martz told him he thought Turley was "stealing money" in collecting on his contract.

Then it got really heated. (Words were expressed that cannot be published). Martz told Turley to leave his office. Turley had some more words for the coach.

Martz told NFL security that Turley leaned across his desk and threatened to "kill" or "inflict harm" on the coach, league sources said.

Turley later denied to NFL security that he threatened Martz.

I wonder if John Fox has questioned Rae Carruth's whereabouts. Rae could issue a threat that would really be taken seriously.

Martz just needs to bite the bullet and hire some bodyguards. Between the St. Louis fans, the Rams players, and all of the non-football people who have contact with him, he's destined to be attacked at some point.

Turley seems a little high strung, but to have the coach say that on TV.....

Martz-mellow is such a putz.

What a horrible head coach.

He'll be gone after they lose to Jets and miss the playoffs.

He blamed the punter Shaun Landeta for losses earlier in the year.
Everybody is taken the fall for this guy.

During the game last night, Al Michales said that Martz demanded the owner put out a memo out to all the players after the incident, stating that he would be brought back next season as the head coach, the owner put out the memo and placed it in all the lockers.

It sounds like Kyle made a trip to Georgia, and Martz was worried that he was playing the role of the Confederacy.

Gee a HC blaming the punter/kicker for all the woes. Sounds hauntingly familiar.

No matter how bad we think things are going there is always a team with worse problems. I couldn't even imagine how fugged up it could be to have Martz for a HC.

this is getting wilder:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1954691

FL security has questioned Rams coach Mike Martz and offensive tackle Kyle Turley (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4273) over an incident where Turley allegedly threatened to kill Martz, ESPN's Chris Mortensen has learned.

Martz and Turley allegedly engaged in a shouting match which resulted in Martz filing a report with NFL Security regarding the death threat, Mortensen is reporting.

The argument began when Turley heard that Martz questioned the tackle's dedication to rehabbing his injured back and decided to confront the coach, Mortensen reports. Turley is on injured reserve after re-injuring his surgically repaired back early in training camp.

For his part, Turley denies having threatened Martz. And on Tuesday evening, Martz issued a written statement denying the report of a confrontation with Turley. "This story is absurd. It is offensive to Kyle Turley and Mike Martz. There is no truth to this story."

Despite missing the entire season with back woes, Turley has said he wants to return for the 2005 season. The seven-year veteran, who has ruled out a second surgery to correct his back problem, has no plans for now of retiring.

"Wanting to play has never been an issue," Turley said earlier this month. "I've given everything to this sport and dedicated myself to this, I think, as much, or in some cases more so, than most people. That's been the goal from Day One, to get back. To get back on the field."

From the time his back began to flare up again early in training camp this summer, Turley insisted he would retire rather than face another surgery. He said doctors have apprised him that, with proper posture, increased core strength and additional flexibility, his back in time will compensate for the disc problem.

How long that process will take, however, is not certain. Turley's goal is to be in camp but that aim might not be a realistic one.

"But if it takes [until] the middle of next season, then so be it," he said. "Or if it takes even the year after that, I'm going to make it back. I'm 29 years old. There's time. I'm going to make it back and play in the league."

Any of their WR's URFA's? And if so would they like to move across state and help out their old coach? :)

Actually, it's stupidity.

They have to pay him top 5 OT money each year when they do that. At least if they signed the guy long term they'd get 2 or 3 relatively cap friendly years before the contract got expensive...

Mike Martz has plenty of flaws, but I don't blame him that much for thinking Turley is "stealing money" with the way he's decided to rehab his back. From what Turley says, it sounds like his choice to refuse surgery makes the rehab process a lot longer than it might otherwise be.

"But if it takes [until] the middle of next season, then so be it," he said. "Or if it takes even the year after that, I'm going to make it back. I'm 29 years old. There's time. I'm going to make it back and play in the league." -- Kyle Turley

He's putting the Rams in a tough position if he's expecting them keep paying him star RT money while he sits at home working on core strength and posture when he could just go under the knife and get back to the team. He ought to volunteer for a pay cut if he wants to take the slow road back to the NFL. IMO.
