SCOTUS decides not to cripple public employee unions yet
The disaster that many unions feared appears to have been at least put off, if not averted.

Even though Alito wrote the opinion and it was 5-4, the opinion was very narrow. The court decided to define a class of employees called "partial government employees" and said they do not have to join or contribute to a union.

What was feared or anticipated depending on your point of view, was a reversal of the Abood decision which basically allowed public employee unions to force non-union members to pay a fee for collective bargaining services. The court said the Abood decision was questionable, but declined to overturn it for now.

I wouldn't be surprised if the narrow focus of the decision is the influence of Justice Kennedy and what it took to get his vote.

The ruling was "narrow" only in the sense that it only applied to the home health care workers in this case. It was not narrow ideologically, and it's clearly a big blow to compulsory union membership/dues.

I personally think public sector unions should be dissolved, but this is an awesome step for the freedom to decide for one's self if they would like to belong to a union.
