****Official 2014 STL Cardinals thread ****

2011 WS Championship
2012 one win from another WS
2013 two wins from another WS title
2014?
  • This is a franchise that has made the postseason 10 times in the last 14 seasons.
  • Reached three World Series in the last decade, and won as many championships (two) the past eight seasons as it did from 1965 to 2005.
  • Our new Manager has more post season experience than any other manager in baseball, except the Giants manager.
  • Three million attendance? Take it to the bank.
  • 60 post season wins since 2004. 20+ wins more than any other team.
  • Only one of the last 14 seasons has been a losing one.

They get a mile high bopper to replace Tulo's offense plus a top of the rotation starter and a potential high upside prospect plus a stable bullpen middle relief arm.
It's not.

The outcomes of these major trades of late have sided so strongly with the teams unloading the high salary that teams are going to stay far far away from those deals going forward, IMO. Look at how badly the Angels have hurt themselves with trades over the last couple of years; they're the most obvious example.

Starting with the Texiera trade, you'd be hard pressed to find a major 'vet for prospects' deal where the prospects side of the trade didn't absolutely annihilate the vet side in terms of value and raw production. Holliday may be the best example.

I'm not saying that I have done this, but just for the other viewers out there:

Has anyone actually watched a baseball game from beginning to end?

Do they want us to polish their world series trophy for them too?

Craig, Miller, Adams and Rosenthal didn't win us a WS, why would that win one for Colorado?

Are you that worried about Cargo and Nolan Arrenado? Because that's about all they have left.

It's still a stupid deal, don't get me wrong. But the Rockies would still be largely irrelevant. It underscores why I don't think a Tulo deal's gonna get made. That deal would infuriate the fanbase and yet they'd still likely struggle to reach 85 wins. If that happens, the fans will just remain angry.

Businessmen aren't likely to do that.

Rebuilding by trading fan favorites - 'face of the franchise' type guys - is extremely difficult for that very reason.

Cardinals founded in 1882
Chiefs moved here in 1963

Royals were founded in 1969
Rams moved to St. Louis in 1995

Of my entire living family of hundreds of aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins and great-type of iterations of these (great-uncles, etc), 90% fans of the teams that have been in MO the longest, because we learned to be fans from our parents.

Pretty much this for me too. My dad's side is from SE MO, and its Cardinals, Cardinals, Cardinals with them and no room for much else sports-wise. My mom's side is from KC and Wichita so they're Chiefs and Jayhawks and maybe the Royals as a distant 3rd. So I ended up getting the best from both sides

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports that the Yankees are talking to the Cardinals about a trade for third baseman David Freese.

Freese will only get more expensive as he continues to go through the arbitration process and the Cardinals have the ability to move Matt Carpenter to third base and play Kolten Wong at second base, so it's no surprise to hear about the possibility of a trade. The 30-year-old is coming off a down year in which he hit .262/.340/.381 with nine homers and 60 RBI over 521 plate appearances, but he would be a solid backup plan for Alex Rodriguez

Yeah, I figured Cervelli as a legitimate backup to Yadi would probably be about what we'd be able to get for Freese.

May be better served to hold onto him and see if he bounces back. Moving Carpenter to 3b significantly diminishes his value, especially if (when) he doesn't have a .360 BABIP in 2014.

If we are only going to get Shumaker trade value, keep him for one more year as a pinch hitter and insurance in case Wong doesn't pan out.

cbssports.com is saying that JJ Hardy for Miller was offered to the Cardinals. Mo had the good sense to turn that down.
