Should Marijuana be Legalized?

I'm curious as to what the consensus among posters here is.

Should marijuana be made legal?

Some interesting stats regarding political parties and age brackets;

Would we be better off if we spent the trillions that were spent fighting the drug war instead on treating addiction?

After all the problem with drugs isn't drugs, it's addiction and that's an issue FAR beyond illegal drugs(just ask all the alcoholics). We need a War on Addiction....not a War on Drugs.

Just say no to Addiction.

Suppose we talked about abortion and asked why pro choice folks supported it. I doubt you'll ever find even one who does so on the basis abortion clinics "raise revenue" for the effing government.

No matter how many people are addicted (even though weed is far less addictive than say cigarettes), it would cost less to treat them than to fight a "war" against almost all drugs and imprisoning practically innocent people.

You are comparing.

You can't compare weed legalization and earning tax revenue on it, to abortion.

I think it should be legal and it has nothing to do with economics for me. I think the baseline of all activity should be set at "legal." Then activities can be made illegal as necessary. I don't see why it is necessary for pot to be made illegal any more than coffee, booze or cigarettes.

I find this to be a logical response. There are plenty of logical reasons why society legalizes or bans things and they change over time. And it's based on morality and personal philosophy. "Taxation" would sway only the most indifferent among us.

For most, I think the argument that "weed would generate huge tax revenue" is usually a response to the idea that legalizing weed would cost the government money or would be some kind of economical problem. I don't think it's the main point very often.

Basically, the only things that should be illegal are things that do harm to another person be it their person or property. So things like murder, assault, theft, fraud, property damage, and rape. Other things that do no harm to other people but harm the doer themselves should be legal: drugs, suicide, experimental medicine, etc.

i believe it should be completely legalized and taxed like any other grocery produce if sold.
i have no interest in giving the government inflated tax revenue when their position has been wrong for so long.

I didn't use to really give a crap about pot one way or another. I viewed it as yet another recreational substance, it was just sort of an illegal form of alcohol to me. I did see some first hand benefits of it within the last few years though. Increased appetite, pain suppression, anti nausea, mood enhancer. Useful for Cancer patients. I guess certain strains have different effects.
